The Prometheus Trust
Chairman’s Report 2021-22
The Prometheus Trust has continued to limit its activities due to the covid crisis but has built on the foundations established in the last two years in the area of virtual studies.
Publishing
The Trust has ensured that its publications remain available - 2 Thomas Taylor Series volumes have been reprinted with enhancements and updates; 6 other books have been reprinted. Our usual publication of an annual anthology in association with the International Society of Neoplatonic Studies has not occurred this year - again the victim of worldwide covid restrictions - but a volume from the ISNS is now in preparation and will be published in the coming year.
Progress on transferring the Thomas Taylor Series into a more modern format to facilitate future reprinting has continued, albeit slowly.
We now have the proposed new editorial board in place and will announce this very shortly.
Booksales are holding at good levels. We have switched our main North America distributor from OMA to Kindred Star Books, run by David Nowakowski, and we look forward to a long association with him.
Education
All face to face activities were cancelled this year, but we have booked venues to restart all of our regular sessions (weekend studies at Purley Chase, and monthly classes in London and Bristol) in the autumn.
Our virtual sessions have settled into what we hope will be a long term pattern: two 8-session courses at a relatively advanced level per year, two 7-session courses at an intermediate level per year, regular 10-session introductory courses, as required, and monthly open sessions. This can be expanded as demand and our ability to staff these permits.
We do have some videos available on the web, and again this is an area which can be developed.
Conference
Our annual conference was once again cancelled due to covid restrictions. We are planning to resume in the summer of 2023, circumstances permitting.
Public Benefit
The above activities are considered to be of public benefit and pursued in fulfilment of the Trust’s stated purposes: all our zoom courses are offered free of charge; face to face meetings are charged at cost (and where necessary, subsidized) and we price our books to ensure that they are within the reach of ordinary students.
The Trust
The Trust continues to develop good connections with the wider community of those involved with the furtherance of good philosophy, and we expect to have a new website launched in the coming year to consolidate this development. In these times of exterior upheavals there is a greater necessity for that inner stability which well-founded philosophy brings - the Trust continues to encourage a deeper and wider appreciation of our ancient inheritance, and its application to modern life.
