In relatlon to offender5, CiD'zens Advice is clear that personal debt and other financial problems can be a cause ol an indlvidu31 offending in the fir51 place, and such problèm9 can increase the likelihood of OffendIng on relea58. Being able lo manage debt and other fin8nci81 problerns during a prison sent6nc8 or upon release into the Community could help to reduce re-offending. M8ny offenders with familias MBY f811 into rent or mortgage arrears caused by 8 redvction of income during their prison sentence. Stable accornrnodation can help reduce re-offending by providing a secure environment in which to live, enabling them to open a b8nk 8ccount, receive benefits and find regular employment. Timely access to advice can. among other things, secure accomrnodation lor an offendèr or their family on release,. ensure access to benefits for the payment of rent 8nd 8dvoc8te on behalf the family Il they are refused support frorn Ihe local authority.
