## 3rd Chandler’s Ford (URC) Scout Group Group Scout Leader Annual Report 2022

It was great to be able to enjoy a full year of Scouting in 2022 after a difficult couple of years with the pandemic.

It was a special year for us at the 3[rd] as we celebrated our 60[th] Anniversary as a Group with a camp at Ferny Crofts in the New Forest in May. It was wonderful to see so many Beavers, Cubs and Scouts involved over the weekend and we were joined on the Saturday by some “old friends” – past Leaders of the Group and District representatives.

Numbers of young people across the Group have stayed steady through the year but with big changes across some sections leaving them either full or short of members.

As it seems I write every year, we could always do with more Leaders and we’re very grateful to those parents who help out when asked. How about trying the Scouts 4-week challenge to see if being a Leader would suit you?

## **Building Maintenance**

With the ongoing uncertainty with the church lease we have restricted our maintenance to essential works. Even so, I must pay thanks to our regular “DIY Guys” led by Brian, our Group President, for their continued efforts in looking after the bricks and mortar and our equipment. Several of them hold other Scout roles in the Group or elsewhere so we’re fortunate they choose to spend their time dedicated to the Group.

## **Our Sections**

We are delighted to still be operating with two Beaver Colonies and two Cub Packs, meeting on Monday and Wednesday evenings and one Scout Troop, meeting on a Tuesday evening. Our Group also hosts a District Explorer Unit who meet at the HQ on a Thursday evening and Guides also have use of the hall on a Friday.

During the year our Sections enjoyed visits to Golden Gecko climbing centre, Donutting at Southampton Ski Centre and a Group visit to Marwell Zoo (on a wonderful rainy day!). Apart from the Group Camp,

perhaps the most notable event though was the Scouts camp at a Jamboree in Denmark organised by our Scout Troop Leader Des for the District.

## **District Merger**

During 2022, the merger of the Scouting Districts of Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh progressed with the new combined District – called Arrow – becoming fully in place in early 2023. Groups within the new District have retained their existing names and we plan to continue providing great Scouting experiences for our young people.

## **Thanks and Final Words**

I don’t like to end my report on a sad note but I must pay tribute to Sue Smith who was our Monday Beaver Colony Leader for over twenty years and a great supporter of the Group for 30 years plus. Sue tragically passed away last October and she is greatly missed.

My thanks as always go to all our Leaders and Section helpers for providing a wonderful programme for our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to enjoy.

Thank you also to the members of our Executive Committee and Trustees who continue to work hard behind the scenes to keep the Group running. Our Treasurer for a number of years, Mandy Elliott, stepped down in 2022 to be replaced by Katherine Edwards, many thanks to Mandy for her work and to Katherine for stepping in. A special mention this year to Sue Beaumont who has stepped in as minutes secretary on top of her membership/subscriptions and events champion roles – thank you Sue. Thanks also to Marion whose tireless work as Chairman is exceeded only by her efforts to keep our Monday Beavers and Cubs sections running successfully.

Long may we continue our Scouting at the 3[rd] Chandler’s Ford.

## _**Accounts to Y/E 31 December 2022**_

In order to comply with the Charities Act 1993, we have produced the accounts on a consolidated basis. These show previous year’s actuals (2021) and this year’s actuals (up to Dec 2022).

## _**Page 1 (Summary)**_

• This has been a difficult year financially for the group, impacted by increasing costs associated with maintaining our premises. Whilst receipts (income) were higher than previous years at £36,088 this includes £16,602 relating to the Denmark jamboree as well as the repayment of the loan of £5,000 advanced to the 2[nd] Chandlers Ford Scout Group. Expenditure included £30,058 relating to the jamboree – income having been received in previous years towards this expenditure. Payments (expenditure) exceeded Receipts resulting in a deficit of £14,931. Excluding the jamboree related income and expenditure and the repayment of the loan advanced to the 2[nd] Chandlers Ford Scout Group, a net deficit of £6,475 arose in the year.

## _**Page 2 (Receipts)**_

- Further income was received in the year in connection with the jamboree which was attended by a number of Scouts from across the district in the summer

- The loan of £5,000 was repaid by the 2[nd] Chandlers Ford Scout Group in the year

- The balance of the income was generated from Subscriptions and Hall Hire, both remained lower than prior to the pandemic.

- Many thanks to Sue Beaumont and Marion Gibbs who are instrumental in raising these funds by managing the subscriptions, Gift Aid and hall bookings.

## _**Page 3 (Payments)**_

- Premises costs increased significantly in all areas.

- We must say thanks to our team of maintenance volunteers who help us to keep our costs lower in this area.

- The costs associated with the District trip to the Jamboree were included in the current year. Income had been received in advance in respect of some of these costs.

The Group is a trust established under rules which are common to all Groups. Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Policy, Organisation and Rules of the Scout Association. The accounts have been drawn up on the receipts and payments basis consistent with last year. Approved by the trustees on 15 June 2023 and signed on their behalf by M Gibbs, Group Chairman.
