John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust.

Annual Report for the year ended 31st March 2022.

With the closure of the Brighton Dome Concert Hall as part of the Covid lockdown, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra was unable to stage the traditional New Years Eve Viennese Concert and therefore no grant was made to the Philharmonic Society in the previous year.

However with the easing of restrictions the orchestra was able to stage the NYE concert in 2022. The Trustees agreed to make a grant towards the sponsorship of the concert as they have done for over 20 years. The grant made was £5215.

The major event for the Trust was the receipt of a legacy from the estate of the late Stella Mainstone, a long time friend of the orchestra. The sum received was £138,710. The trustees were delighted with this legacy as if refilled the

“coffers” of the Trust as they had been depleted by reason of the Trustees agreeing to bail out the orchestra in recent years to prevent it falling into administration.

Following discussions with the Trust’s financial advisor (Tilney now renamed Evelyn Partners) it was agreed to add the sum to the investment for growth strategy which the Trustees have followed for a number of years.

The account with the Charities Official Investment Fund remains. The details of the Trust remain the same as reported previously i.e. the Trustees remain the same as do the Bankers, the Hon. Legal Advisor and the Accounts Examiner ( when required).

The Trustees were informed that no unusual transactions had taken place and that the Trust remains in a healthy financial position and is looking forward to 2025 when the orchestra will celebrate its centenary.
