OBJECTIVES AND AcTiv￿lES
Aims and Objectives
The main objective of the Society is to advance the edUCa￿On ol th8 public in the Science and art of photography.
A photography ctsursè is run each year available to Members of the public.. some Members from the coursejoin the Society
and progress as photographers as they benefit from the main a¢b"vities of the Souety which are Ihe arrangement of
Phot￿raphIcleCt￿reS. demonslrations, competib.ons and exhibits"oTh.
There a￿ also specialist groups Including the Digital lrna9ing Group. where members are able to provide advice and
support to 88ch other. As is outlined in the next $e¢tion of this report a range of practical 5e55ions have now been
introduced to meetings of this group.. and the Distinctions Advice Group Whe￿ member5 seek advice, and conslructNe
critique on their photO9raphic work from colleagues.
This range of activitEs enables rnembers to continuously improve their photography. as well as gaining distinctons antj
awards. The Beyond the Wall group has also conts.nued in 2024.5. This year physical meetings at the Clubhouse
continued for thos8 who wish lo attend, ¥Mth online'zoom. participation a continuing option for those who wish to Use It.
The U58 of th8'Zoom 'platfom has enabled the Souety to widen acces5 for members and potenbal member5 as wdl
as enabling members to participate In m88tings even if they are unable to attend at the Clubhouse for ill-heatth or other
reasons.
Resutts lor the year are contained In the Statement of Financlal Acb'vities.
The Society does not make grants. The Society is run by volunteers who. other than the Secretsry. are not entitled to
remuneration and only expenses are clatmed., 8tthough the Secretsry can receive ￿mUneratIOn. no payments were made
in the year.
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
The rnernbership curr8ntty stands at 141.
The Sctiety's weekty meetings have continued to be successful and diverse in their content. The Society continues to
attract p￿Senter9 frotn the United Kingdom as well from other countries such as Namibia and the USA. both via 'Zoom'
and in person. The programrne for 202415 was very varied with diffe￿nI gen￿$ being addressed.
There have been heatthy entries for the Society'5 Projected Digital Image IPDII and Print competitions for members this
year. It has b￿n grattying to see more new m8mbers entering at Club level. with some prornisingly accomplished ima9es.
Several Club and Intermediate entrants should be moving up a level next season. The Soclety has trialed a new sofva
systern to manage digi181 competition entries and wll start using it in September.
Members continue lo do well in UK and Inlemalional Salons. with acceptances. med81s and other awards. It is often bolh
th& confidence and the improving photographic standard of their work, gained through the experience of th8 Society's
competitions. that have been the foundation for this success.

The Society'5 charitable work continues wth two Sabn5, the Photography Course and hosting the weekly meets'ng5 of
The Photographers with Disabilities IPWDI 9roup la separate registered ¢haTrtyl until this Charity was formerly dis501ved
at the end of 2024. However, despite the dissolution of this ¢harity the weekly sessions with some members of the
charity have conlinued under the au5pice5 of the Society- A number of forrner rnembers of PWD have also joined the
Society. In addition. the Society has supported the wider disabled Community through hosting the twice-y8aHy
distinelions assessments for the Disabkd Photographers Society lanother separate registered charity) with sev8ral
Society membefs serving on the assessment panels too.
The Society's Photography Course participant numb8rs were 15 this year, lower than last year1191. There is increased
competition in the photography course market. both locally and nationally. Over Ihe last year an In¢￿asIng number of UK
and International professional photographers have begun to offer on-line COu￿e$ as a way ol Increasing their business.
The Soaety will be In¢￿aSing its own marketing to ensure the￿ is wider awareness of thè Society's Photography Course
and Ihe benefits of the Society. Atthough the course numbers were disappointingty lower than the previous year, course
participants produced work of a high standard. A number have joine(I the Society and a￿. as pointed out earfier, already
contributin9 to the Souety's competrtions. The content of the coutse has been reviewed and llext year will in¢lude fv¥o new
gen￿$. as well as a new course leader and three new lecturers.
Th8 monthly Digital Imaging Group continued to meet in the clubroom and online using the Zoom pbrfom. Whilst these
meetin9$ enable members to Present their work and gain feedback in an Infomial atmosphere the fo¢us in th8 last year
has moved towards rn0￿ poctical eveninos and greater support for leaming and feedback. Members are en¢ouraged to
demonstrate any new techniqLtes they have been experimenting with. Meetings of the Group also provides an opportunity
for new members ¢0 Sha￿ their work in a more infomial environment.
The Beyond the Wall 9roup had a quiet year, but plans are already taking shape for ￿xt yèar's programme.
Use of th8 siudio facilities ha5 continued with a number of group sessions and the hiring of the studio fariliti8s by in¢Jividual
member8.
Members of the Society have Continued to obtain a number of Photographic distinctions numbèr. Mèmbers now have 8

The 79th 8ri5tol Inlemational Salon continued to support th8 print medium offering th8 same thr80 print and three digital
clas8e5 that were offered in the previous three years. The So¢iety ¢ontinyes to believe that the print aspect of
photography musl be Supported and en¢ouraged. The entry this year was disappointyng showing a de¢￿ase from th8
previous year. Entrants and entries fell by approximately 25Ytr. Despite the reductions there were still 480 entrants from
a¢ros$ the worfd. and changes made to our organisalion and running tsf the Salon reduced overall cost to the Society.
This enabled the Society to rnaintsin the status quo on the balance sheet. The audio-visu81 presentation ol accepted
images was shown al Bristol and a number of other venves in the South-west. once again ￿CeiVIng excellent feedback
on the Content and presenlalion.

Building on the Society's experience ol running an inlemational salon lh8 Society decided lo launch a British Photographic
Exhibition IBPEI. This is known as the Great Westefft Pholographic Exhibition IGWPEI. The purpose of running a
Second salon is to raise the Society's profil8, provide photographers with a new opportunity to exhibit their work and
generate a new revenue stream for the So¢iety.
Approval was granted by the British Photograph￿ Exhibitions and the 1st GWPE was run in October 2024. Overall. the
exhibition was a succe55 with many hundreds of entries. An exhibition was put on in the club r00rn5, although attendanc8
was disappointingly knw.
prepara￿'On$ are underway for running the 2nd GWPE in Octob8r 2025 wilh a few changes to help prony)te entry numbers
and attendance at the Exhibition.
The Society ha$ enjoyed a hugely successful year in external competitions, one that has attracted other talented
photographers to joSn the Souety. Successes include..
The Kingswood Salver.. BPS regained the Salver havtng come first wth the best pan81. On8 of th8 Societys m8mb8rs
r8cewed first place for the best Individual image.
WCPF Digital Projected Irnages Cornpetition didn't match prior years achievement, coming third by a one point margin!
WCPF Inter-club Prinl battle.. The Scciety slipped to second plac8, suffic￿nI to qualify the S￿letY for the PAGB
national print COmpe￿"tIOn to be held in Novernb8r 2025.

PAG8 Masters ol Prinl compeiition. Th¥5 15 the premier print competilion organised by the PAG8. Members made o
huge 8ffort submitting a total of 42 images eaming the runners up p051tion for the most successful club. One s￿Iety
m8mber made it into the exclusive 60-Image exhibition.
Photogfaphic Society of America IPSAI int8r-club ¢ornpetitsons.' There are three digitalty projected competitions
(Nature, Cobur, Monochrornel and five prtnl se¢lions (Large and Small Mono & Cok)ur and cr88t￿ye). Each
competition comprises three rounds (November. February, Aprill, followed by an end of yearcompetitson for previously
aw8rded im8ge$. For the season which concluded in June 2024 the Society finished with a ma9nifi¢ent three first and
o second places in the five print cate9ories, first, second and 11th in the PDI Sections. In Ihe'end of year, Competition
2024, Society fflembers picked up multiple awards in the prints and digitsl secb"on5. The Society was then moved up
a divisK)n in all categories ex¢epl Natu￿ PDIS as the Society was already in the top diviston for thi$ genre.
Only Mono - this is the only inter club battle dedicated to rnonochrome prints. In Ihe 2024 competrtion. the Society
came 2n¢J abng with the best Over81￿ image.
Rhondda POI b8tt18 - similar to the above. this is for open digitally project8d imag8s. The 2024 resutt didn't quit
rnatch 2023 with th8 So¢iety finishin9 4th.
The Society is promoting stronger 118S to the inlernats'onal community of photographers by hostingljudging several rounds
of international cornpetit￿ns 8nd runnin9 its international Sabn. The Society is exploring th8 possibility of Twinning with
dub from Lodz in Poland.
Following very posib.ve feedback from those aitending'The Bob Fari$ Memorial Lecture. in 2023. another spe¢4al one4ay
event will be held in May 2025. Th8 event will feature lectures by Intemal￿na1IY renowned photographers, Stèven Lè
Provost and Charlie Waite and will b8 open to Society members and the wider cornmunty of photograph8rs. 11 is proposed
that the Society will host the third'Bob Fans Memorial Lecture, in the Spring of 2027.

Due to the generosty of past members, the Society is in the very privileged position of owning it5 own property in Bristol.
In 2015 the Society rnoved to its present prerllises in Montpelier, Bristol. As would be normal with 8 comm8rual building
which 15 n8arly 40 years old, some m8inienance works are lo be expected. wilh 2024 being no exception. In the Summer
of 2024, f8irly extensive repair works were requi￿￿ to be cafned out to the party wall between Units 13 and 14 whith
incu[￿d costs to the Society of £4110. Work5 aro proposed in th8 Spring of 2025 lo remov8 the five windows to the r88r
of the building which have been letting in moisture, the openings will then be bricked up. This work should alleviate any
future m(x5ture ingres5 problems.
Apart from ￿gUlatOry works. such as Portable Appliance Testing IPATI, electrical in5P8Ctions for insurance purpose5 and
any ehanges in the regulations apptying lo elecirical installations, fire al8rrns and ernerg8ncy lighting, it is not expected
that th8re will be any major expen58s incuffed on the buiwing in the fore5ee8ble ftliure.
A newsletter is sent to all mèmbers ol the Socigty every week. This 8dvi58s rnernb8rs of upcorning m88tirvJs and other
Society events. The new51etter also keep5 members infOr￿d of.. Society photO9raphic successes, both nationally and
inleTnationally', competition r8sults,' local and national federation events and any other news deemed to be of Inte￿$1 to
memb8rs. In the Spring 2025 the 600th edition of the newsletter in its present fomiat was published.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Th8 Soci8ty has various sources offunds, the principal onesbein9 members, svbscripbons, an annual photography Course,

The financAal results ft)r the year show. bolorè the fèvaluth.on of tha invostsnents, that for the year end8d 31 March 2025
expenditure &xce¢dBd income by £2.9k wh8rea5 in 2024 incorne and exp8nditur8 were in balance. However, the 2024
inctsme induded approximately £3.Ok as Ihe balance of the189acy from the late Bob Fans. withoulwhich both years would
have Shown defiots ol approximately £3k.
The 19ck of improvemenl in net income is frustrating 85 significant steps had been taken during the year ￿ryth th8 aim of
bringing incom8 and 8XP8ndilure into ba18nce. In particular, members. subscription fees had been raised, bringing in an
extra £2.6k, costs of th8 Bristol International Salon had been reduced by £2.Ok, and a national pholo9raphic exhibition had
been held for the first time which generated nel income of £4.6k IGWPE- Great Western Photographic Exhibilvjnl.
On the downside, entries to the Bristol Salon conb'nue to fall, being £3.2k185s thi5 year than lasl, which is 8 problem being
l&ced by other clubs and societies too., and incom8 from the photography cour58 was £1.7k less than last year. which is
something the Sooety is taking Steps to rectty.
With regard to expenditure, a11 c05t5 were kept well under control, with th8 notable exception ol premis8s rnaini8nance
costs, wh1ch at £5.4k were £4.8k greaterthan in 2024. These were essential repairs to biickwork $0 were unavoidable.
To¢al income was £33.1k12024.. £32.1kl and total expenditu￿ was £36.Ok12024.. £32.Okl. Investrnent values increased
byjusl £1.3k12024' £12.9kl. This too was disappointing as the increase to 1010212025 was £8.9k, but thank5 to events in
the U.S. investment values fell from £148.6k on 1010212025 10 £141.Ok by the M8rch year 8nd.
l in all Ihi$ means there was a net reported deficit of Income ol £1.5k for the year compared to a net surplus in 2024 of
£12.9k.

The Society will continue its core curr8nt activities. induding suppoityng its vulnerable. and ￿mot8 members to 8cce5S the
eeting5 via Zoorn. or 5imilartechnologies. The Soci8ly will also continu8 to support and he* the members via the Beyond
the Wall Group, the Digital Imaging Group and the Distinctions Advic8 Group, all of which have been re9ularfy run and well
attended. The Society continues lo offer an excellent programme of events. and has been successful in National and
International cornpetitions, and will run ihe sècond Bob Fans Memorial Lecture in May 2025, 811 of which will continue to
enhance the Society's reputation and awareness in the photographic arena. In addition the Society wll continue lo run the
BPE (British Photographi¢ Exhibitionsl'Great Westem Photo Exhibition. in 2025 and beyond. This will further promote
8waren8ss and interest in the Society.
