Chairman's Statement
In last year's sts*m¢nt I reflected that nothin8 could have prepared us forthc challenges of Covid which hit us ail in
March 2020. The mas51Vt disruption in 2020 continued throughout 2021 and. indeed. wtll inio 2022. We had to, very
sadly. postpon¢ our I￿geSt annual ¢v¢nt- our 2022 New Y¢aT'S Day gattroring- although the new date on Easter
Saturday proved extremely popular. Not ortly have visitor ntthibers yo-yo'd as a result of Covid. but IM)th staff and
volunteer Covid sickness h15 hit U5 hard durin8 2022. Many volunteets have reassessed theirown volunteering
¢ornmitment P05t Covid and have dccided to r￿uc¢ their commithieni or reiire altogether.
HOW¢￿r. in the Thnth5 we were opcn. and t5p￿la1[Y in the sumrner h)lidays, we recorded g)me of ow greatest
numb¢r of visitors for lh* period ¢ver- a very rewuring sign. It wa5 during this period that we celebrated the 95
anniversary of the first British Grand Prix. which Wds held at BriN)klands in 1926. 8nd a few weeks later ihe Stirling
Mos5 tribute eveTht where the Brooklands Members team were able io amass art extraordinary number of cars that Moss
had ra¢ed in the 1950's and 1960's. W¢ wer¢ delighied that Tony Brook8 a racing le8end in hi5 righL sprnt the
day with us and this probably his l&st public tvcnt before he Sadly passed.
That this Museum, today. finds itself with a strong beatin8 heart is thanks to the DCMS cul￿￿7 Recovery Fund aThd
other grartts we have rettived from other aLrthorities. members and friends. These have totalled over £2m. I thank
you all. The VAT relief - now concluded- as well as the CIBL5 loan. have cqually given us the cothfLden¢e to move
ft1rn￿rd. Of ¢ours< these grants and the VAT relief have rKJw ¢ome ￿ an end yet the impact of Covid and indeed the
economic crisis have not so we must continue to bE forever vigilant and focussed.
We faced a huge challenge just six weeks before the summer re4)pMing when it mutually &￿eed ihat our catering
contractor. CH&Co, would ￿1 be continLtin8 with ￿$. We express our thanks to thtm for the many years we spent in
5ucce5sfvI partnership. In true Br¢Joklands fashion. our Senior rnanagemenl learn seamlessly brought the catering in
house aThl we sth)n had a far better off¢riog for our members and our visiior5. which now i￿ludeS many street food
outlets dotted around the site on eveni d•ys.

our 5tren8ths and helpin8 U5 tell our storie5 better. We are unique in the museum WOTld because Biooklands was rh¢

endeavour so evident at Brwklands. is needed to solve the challen8es of today. 4TwJ inspiring visitors to ihitlk aboLrt how
they ¢an play a Tole in shapin8 the ￿Ure we will all share.
Inspiring the D¢￿ genemion of youn8 people to take up career5 in scIe￿e. teC1u￿[0gy. engineering maths (STEM),
thereby helping io address the n￿lo￿al shortage of s¢ientLSts and engineers, is at the heart of our educaiion progrdrnmes
and it will continut to play an Incr￿InglY Important part in BriN)klands life as we only celebrate ihe a¢hievem¢nis
of the pasi but we l(x)k at ihe presen¢ and ¢0 the future as well.
Thus, ow partnership with the Heritsge Skilts A¢ademy h&5 gone frorn strenoh to stren8th sirKe tIKy opened their site
at Brooklands m￿SeUm in January 2021. As I write this statement there are some 160 budding hersthg¢ engineering
appreniices enrolled on three year ¢OUTses.
i￿ring (he year, we developed th¢ Bmoklands InrKJVation Academy which will inspire and support more ihan four
hundred secondary School students each year, to take up careers in STEM subjects. This innovative programme is being
developed thmugh a parthttship with Boume Edu¢aiion Tns( businesses it)¢lwting kad spotwr GlaxoSmiihKline, and
Well North Enierprises. A seconded science teacher, working within the Museum. is helping to redefine our learning
offer for schools. to be more impacrful for the young people wilh wlw)m we ertgage.
The launch. by Yesterday Channel. of the ten part series. ￿ of the Trnnsport Museum," has been o M4)nderful
portrayal of all the behind the s¢et)es work by our Wolw)¢ee￿ at)d s¥ff and has yndoubtedly had a favourable impact on
visitor numb¢r5.

Despite 2021 being aTh)iher year thii was overthadowed by ihe covid pandemic. Brooklands Musewn ¢merged strongly
gnd with its #rnbitious plans ftir the future having undergone fvrtherdevelopm¢m. The Chairnian's report m¢ntion5
many of thc year's highlighis. Including the partnetship with Heritage Sktlls Academy to provide apprenticeship
training. the launch of the Sttrtts of the Tra￿￿rt Museum TV stties, the opening of the exhibtiion with McLare
improvcments kn the Mu5¢um's admissions area and a*4rds ftom TripAdvisor. Surrey Business Award5 and the
Beautiful South.
These successes were achieved agarnst a ba¢kdmp of urt¢¢rtainty. lo¢kdowns and Signifi￿nI Or￿n153t10Thal change. Due
to lockdowms. the m￿eum was ctosed for the fitst five and a half months of th¢ year. bui li tA)unced back to have its
best Augusi ever for visiior numbers. Nevertheless overall income was down by around £874,¢MM) over the year. if
gr￿1$ ar¢ excluded. showing how vital the government's Cultwal Recovery Fund grants were ￿ 5ustsining Brooklands
through this period and enabling the Museum io finish the year with a surplus. There is no expectation that emergency
grant funding will be available in th¢ future.

changing how we live. The story will be told in a new hangar that will bring CorKorde and our other CLVLI aircraft under
ver, preseTving ihem and making them ac¢essible to everyone.
A pre-masierplan phase of £lrn of remvations to the grthle Il* listed Clubhouse has been made possible during 2022,
thanks to grants from Elmbridge Borough Courtcil and the Department of Diwul Culture Media and Sport's MEND fvrtd.
The work5 will include the installation of a lift makin8 the building accessible for the first time.

Brooklands, past with innovation today and the drawing out of thc chara¢teristi¢s and roles of the huge rart8e of peopl¢
involved in pushing automoiiv¢ boundori¢s b)ih today and in th¢ past. IL has been a great success in attracting a new
auditnce and in inspiring youn8 people to think ab￿￿[ c*reets in automotive seciorand in STEM artss mor¢

FUNDRAISING:
The fundrdi5in8 Appeal Board welcomed new committee menthrs and has continued to develop new conM¢ts and
relationships for the Museurn. A rdnge of new grdnts were received and Brookland5 Museum is 8Tateful to all the
individuals and organisaiions thai are supFM)rting its work. £200,000 has been raised ￿WardS the fitsi two years of the
BrDoklands Innovation Academy as well &5 donations to support our core a￿1VitIeS during the many motiths of Covid-
enforced closure in 2021, and to undertake essettiial repairs ott the Clubhouse. The arnount rdiSed extteded the targets for
the year, largely due io the unexpttt¢d continuation of ihe Culturdl Recovery Fu￿J.

A new ten-part TV series, Secrets of the Transwrt Museum. filmed entirely at Brooklands Museum. wa5 launched in
M¥rh 2021 on Yesterday chanrtel with viewing fi8ure5 of up 10 51)O,IKM) per ¢pisod¢, and with a se¢otHt s¢ries airing
frorn February 2022. This raised the Museum's profile ioca]ly and ￿tIo￿lly. and extended visibility and reach. at # time
when Covid meant the Museum was closed.
The Museum's achievements wtre reco8ni5ed with a TripAdvisor Travellers. Choice award. giv￿ to the IO%of
attractions ini¢m*ionally, and when it was sel¢¢ted as a finalist in thE Beautiful South awards.
A full revi¢w and bencbmarking of our markding Stratryy during 2021 led to the decision to increase the resources put
into marketin& with an additioTral member of staff, larger budg￿ and the commissioning of a PR agency to support th¢
Museum's natiortal rea¢h and profile. parti¢ulaTly in th¢ motoring world. In AuNmn 2021 the updated webslte was
launched with improved navi8ariorL design aThd usabiliry. The summer t￿arke11ftg campaign focused on ihe new M¢Lar¢n

A new Cycle path from Weybridge Wwn centre ￿ Weybridge station and then past the Museum to the Brookland$

artwork for new signage for the Brnoklands Heritage Arw raising thc site's profile within the area and the Museum

There were Considerable periods during which the Museum was closed in 2020 due io ihe Covid p2Trd¢mi¢. The
beginning of 2021 saw a similar pattern. As the year began, the Museltm had been rquird to be c105ed since mid
December 2020 and vrd5 not able to properly reopen until 21° May when it rcopcned Wednethy io Sunday. alihough
there had b¢en a few days ofoU￿00r only opening from mid April_ Ai the b¢ginnit)g of ihe summer holidays the Museum
moved to seven day per week opening during xhool holidays, but remaining closed on Mondays duriTh8 term time. until
March 2022. when seven day opening wa5 fully reinstated.
BeCa￿se of the closure5, 2021 ViSLtor numbers were 98,486, an increase of nearly on 2020 but do￿ 46Vts on 2019
level of183.636 (2020. 49.019). Visitor income for the year was £1238.652 (2020- £568,672).
Covid brought some unexpected cha]lenges. of ￿1(h became op￿tunIties. in particular bringing the Museum's
teriog operation in house from June 2021. after many yeaTS of partnership with Crea¢iveEvenis, latterly owmed by
CH&Co. Initially thi5 W&% very demandin8. Wlth the need to rebuild a business that had bcen largely closed since the stsrt
of th¢ pandemi¢, and iniegrne li into the wider Mus¢um business with substsniial impa¢ts for the FinaThce and HR
department5 in particular. However. in the longer terni li ha5 been proven to be an excellent move. with the new team
delivering high srandards, and greater pmfits than would have be￿ possible when li was outsourced.
Work Continued on the Museum's ¢qua]iry. diversity and inclusion strategy, Open Up Brooklands, during th¢ year. with
session5 held with all staff and Tru5tee5 as well &s some volunteer5. The strategy ernphasi5e5 working to make all the
Museum'$ activities, programmes and exhibiiiotts ithclusive and relevant to a wide rnnge of people and work has already
begun to integrate good pradice acros5 a range of areas including rtcruilmenL mark¢ting ar￿ leaming. The Trustees

possible to finish 2021 with a surplus of £474,301. However there is a backlog of maintenance work which now needs to

holding some of ihe exhibits of Brth)klands Museum. On 31 March 1990 oN*nership of all Museum exhibits at that date was
Iransferred from thrs company io the Brooklands Museum Collection Tnjst. The BrrK)klands Museum Collection Trust. by the
ieTrnS of the said deed. loans the exhibits ¢0 this company for display puryN)ses. The Colleciions Tn￿1 is a separdtely re8lSteTed
Charity from 14 March 2006 and is classified as a subsidiary of th¢ Museum. li conducted no trade during the period and
remained eniirely dormartt. The assets of the Colleciion Trust hav¢ never been valued and are not consolidated into these
accounts.

UK and the Republic of Ireland {FRS102} {effeciive l January 2019) and the Companie5 Act 2006. Assets and liabilities are
initially recogni5ed at hi5toricaJ c05t or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevarrt accounting policy not¢(s}. The
Statement of financial activities (SOFA) and the balance sheet consolidate thE financia] statements of lh¢ charity and its
subsidiary undtrtaking. The results of the subsidiary are consolidated on th line by line basis. The charity considers iiself to be
a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRSIO2.
Aecounting estimates and assumptions are made ¢on¢eming the firture an￿ by their nature, will rarely equal ihe related actual

The activities ofthe Museum. like all othersirnilarorganisationg has been severelyimpaciel by the Covid 19 Pandemic l¢ading
tr> a sub5tsntial loss of irKome. However. because the TTUSI has bttn able io rettive a substsnlial amount of Govemm¢nt
support using the furltsugh scheme and #Iso loan finarKe. and has also rt¢eived gI￿t fvnding, th¢ impa¢t has been substantially
mitiÈated. The Trustees have accordingly Prepared detsiled projections for the nexi 18 monrhs and outlin¢ proje¢ttons up io
2023. based on expected income from regular achwties. granis and donaiions (mm fundets and other donations, against
expeeted general and projeci expenditure. On ihe b&sis of those projections they constder the ¢harity to be a going concem for
at least 12 JTh)nths following approval of Ihe accounts and for ihe foreseeable future. No material un¢ertainlies that may cast
significant doubt aFKJut the ability of the Museum to continue as a going concern have ac¢ordingly been identified by
management or the Trustees. The fLnancial swements have been prepared on the going concern basis.
