The principalactivityis that of a charitablenature,namelyto relievepoverty,sufferingand distress among
young people by providing advice, education, training and material help.

results of such research.

## **`ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities`**

2020 has been a difficult year for Youth Support as for everyone else due to the COVID pandemic.
```

```
In UK we had to contendwithfloodingof the officedue to a disturbedmalewhokeptblockingthe sewers
withobjectssuchasCDslegobricksbottlecapsetcandalotofdamagewascausedwithrepairs delayed
duetotthelockdowns.InJamaicawehadaseriesoftropicalstormsthatbatteredtheseasideof the
property necessitating major repairs to the sea defences.
```

IthasbeenverydifficulttocarryouttheinternationalworkduetotheCOVIDrestrictionsandDiane has
mainlybeen stuckin UK for about5 monthsand in Italyfor similarperiodof timewith onlyabout6 weeks
in Jamaicaat the beginningof the yearand a rapidflightfromUSA on the last planeout in March.This has
meant that some issues have been delegated and remote work has been the norm.
```

Courthearingsarenowremote.Assessmentshavebeenconductedremotelyfairlysuccessfully with
whatsapp and exchange of videos of children and families.
```

Throughout2019thevolumeofassessmentshadincreasedexponentiallyandmanymedicalshad been
completedwithrespecttochildprotectioncases.Apreviouslytheworkhasbeentoalargedegree at
'tertiary'levelwithregardtoassessingfamiliesandpatientswhohavealreadyseenother paediatricians
andan expertviewpointhasbeenrequired.UnfortunatelyduringCOVIDlockdownstherehasbeena very
greatincreaseincasesofdomesticviolenceandchildabuseandtheseverityofthecaseshasalso been
quite remarkable.
```

During2020wehaveworkedoncasesofthreechildmurders,threefamilieswithextremeneglect and
starvationtothedegreeofmultisystemorganfailureandmanychildrenhadbeentreatedinways that
couldnotbewritteninthisreport.Therehavebeenverymanycasesofbabieswithserious fractures
includingmanyfracturedskullsand multipleskeletalinjuriesincludingone baby with injuryto nearly every
boneinhistinybody.Wehavealsobeensentpolicebodycamvideoswhichhasgreatlyhelped in
assessingassaultson childrenand Dianewas able to see a baby foundunconsciousunder a pile of bedding
and observe first hand the child's condition as if in the room with the baby.
```

Policereferralshave increasedwith workbeing done on severalcasesof onlinegroomingand sexual abuse
wherebyDianehasbeenaskedtoassessvideoevidenceandassessagesofvictims.Therehavealso been
severalcasesoffactitiousillness(Munchausensyndrome).Wehavebuiltupareputationfor dealing
accuratelywith fictitiousillnessand seemto be the first port of call for manyreferrals.Unfortunately work
onthebookonthesubjecthasbeendelayedbythemanyreferralsandtimetakenactuallydealing with
the patients.
```

WehavecontinuedtoreceiveverypositivecommentsfromJudgesandthenumberofpatients referred
has increased and certain social service departments have been specifically requesting our services.
```

IthasbeenhearteningthatonceagainforafurtheryearDIanehasbeenabletoresumemoreof usual
activitiesas mobilityimprovedand has oncemoresuccessfullycompletedthe fifthsuccessiveappraisal for
the GMC. Hence retaining her medical licence.
```

Jamaica:- The stateof emergencycontinuedin the northwith curfewsdue to the level of violence-  mainly
fuelledbyyouthinvolvementandthismergedintothecurfewsimposedforCOVID.Wehave continued
spraying and fogging at roughly 3 month intervals to reduce aedes mosquitos.
```

USA- TheSAHMmeetingin March2020wasin SanDiegoandDianetravelledtherefromJamaicaonly to
findthatit wascancelledat thelastminutedue toCOVIDLaterDianepresentedSpecialInterestgroup on
children affected by warfare remotely via Zoom.
```

Afghanworkhasconcentratedonhelpingsomeofthefamiliesin UK.Theplannedfieldtripfor2020 had
tobe postponedagaindue tothepoliticalclimateand toCOVIDand a furtherdatehas notyetbeen fixed
for next visit.
```

Europeanwork.AdminofficenowbasedinItalyandfunctioningwellwithpaperworkbeingscanned and
sent over and Diane travelling between sites as allowed by the shutdowns.
```

## **`Fundraising activities`**

TheriseinreferralshasbroughtinincreasedincomeforYouthSupportandhencehasallowed some
repaymentsto be made to Dr Birch who has continuedto supportthe charitynot only by providing medical
input without drawing a salary, but has also continued the loan made to Youth Support over the past years.
Althoughpaymentsareoftenlate,thishasimprovedwehavenothadtowriteoffmanynewdebts this
year.Onefirmofsolicitorswentintobankruptcyowingusfeeswhichwerewrittenoffafterappeals to
legal aid and to the law societyetc. The legal aid systemcontinuesto give problemsand with the increased
complexityofcases,theyaretakingupmorehoursforwhichlegalaidhadaceiling-allourcasework is
issuedwithestimatesofcostpriortoacceptingtheworkandoftenthelocalauthorityarehavingto pay
theexcessoverthatallowedby legalaid.Severalrefugeecaseshavebeendoneprobonoas charity cases
and all cases have charity subsidy by being charged less than the usual level.
```

O.R. has been applying for grants for the Voice project.

'Voiceof YouthProject'- this is gainingmomentumin termsof interestbut fundinghas been problematic.
A grant is hoped to materialize in the near future.

Uncertainty due to COVID restrictions means that long term planning is difficult at present.
