Objectives

The objective of the charity is to raise funds to finance projects in developing countries for the relief of poverty, by giving people the means to help themselves and their communities. The charity informs its members about the progress of the funded projects, while also aiming to raise awareness of the developing world in general, by means of newsletters and talks. We always seek personal contacts for the projects and obtain feedback and evidence of project completion. We are not directly affiliated to any religious or political groups.

Membership

As of the end of August 2022 we had 350 members who pay an annual subscription . Our subscription income was £2,135 which covered our general administrative costs of £1,454 .

Receipts

Total receipts through members donations, gift aid and fund raising events amounted to £39,382 an improvement on the previous year which raised £36,583 . Our fund raising events achieved £23,318 compared to £20,876 the year before. Donations from a variety of sources including personal donations of £6,698 and HMRC gift aid refunding of £3,383 achieved a total of £16,064.

The Silent Auction was held live at last with a supper and we raised £5,156. The Open Gardens afternoon had a very successful result of £5,656. The Christmas Appeal for building a school in Mpigi, Uganda raised £9,604 .

We held a Bingo event to supplement the Christmas appeal with £1090 and the Bottle stall raised £860 and finally the street collection in November 2021 raised £952. We received money from some local Churches, in particular £2,000 from the United Reformed Church in Oxted and £1271 from Churches together in Oxted.

Projects

We donated £43,713 to thirteen projects in health, education and water or farming in five countries, a 48% increase on the previous year. 80% of the donations went to African countries and 20% to India.

In line with our pre-requisites for all donations we always seek to have known contacts, usually through our members, in the country or better still, in the actual community which stands to benefit and we obtain regular feedback on both progress and financial accounts. We issue regular newsletters to our members to keep them informed of our activities and feedback from projects as well as giving a full financial report at our AGM.

Finance

Total receipts for the year were £39,382 and total payments were £45,167. Hence we had an operating deficit of £ 5,786 , which when combined with our opening bank balance of £7,373 left us with a positive bank balance of £1,588 at the year end.
