It is with great honour that I present my first Chair's Report. haying taken on the role at the beginning of this reporting period.
SteppinE into thi5 Posltion has been both a privileee and a responsibility. and l am deep￿ grateful for the opportunity to
represent the Neonatal Nurses Association INNAI during what has been an exrraordinary year.
This year ha5 been marked by sienificant activity across the neonatal landscape. Nation31 reports, reviews, and the launch of
the lfvyear plan have kept us all focused on ensuring that the voice of neonatsl nursing Is heard at the highest levels of
decision-making. 13rn proud that the NNA has been present at so many meetings and group5 across the UK. championin8 the
expert15e and dedication of our members_
Our Special Interest Groups have lone from strength to 5treTh8th_ The NNSIG successfully launched their Ga5troschi5is Best
Practice Standard. settin8 a benchrnarkfor care and collaljoration. We also celebrated the launch of our Family Inte8rated Care
SIG, further embeddin8 family-inte8rated care into our professional frofflework. Internationallyi we 5UPPOrted member5 to
attend the COINN conference in Denmark, enwrirbE that UK neonatsl nur5in8 continue5 to contribute to and learn from 8lobal
dialosue.
Closer to home, our sell-out two-day tohferente in Derby was a highlight, brin8in8 totether colle¥gue5 from •cross the
country to share knowledEe, innovatiofi. afid inspiration. We also £elebrn¢ed excellence through our annual awards,
retognising the outstandin8 contributions of neonatal nurses. Another milestone was the ltyunch of our iritertyctive ¢8reer
framework, a t(K)I desi8netl to support professional growth and progression and prornote nurse retention and recruitment.

ATAIN120171 are focusing on four areas of improvements. not only to reduce term admissioTh rate, but to improve the care of
jaundice, hypoElycaemia, respiratory conditions and asphyxia. A rerrospeciive audit has been devised of 311 term babie5 born
over 37 week5 and admitted to the neonatal unit. The data was analysed in concordance with the guidance for clinical review
team questions IATAIN 20171- Within thi5 data rt was evident that a group of baby'5 had a neonatal adm159ion for less than
twenty-four hours. The aim of this was to identrfy common reasons for adMiss￿n5. identify factors or ri5k5 leadin8 to
admissions arid if the admi55ion was avoidable.
Within thi5 audit we aimed to capture the babies who had aTh admission for less than twenty-lour hours on neonates. The

I have been working as a neonatal nurse lor 10 years in a level 3 unit in central London. Last year, I had an opportunity to work
a5 a research nurse on a secondrnent. The research was about neonatsl nurse retention which was very intere5tin8 and I
reali5ed our volces need to be heard more, to keep 8oin6 the amazing work we all do for the babie5 and their fornily.
I recelved NNA research scholarship thls year to conduct a qualitstive study on neonatal nurses In En8land and Wale5 to
further understsnd their experience5 on job 5atisladion, burr￿￿1 and irbtent to Stay.
The 5horts8e in neonatal nursin8 worklor£e 15 a matter of 8rave concern. In the V.K. overnll 20% of 5hlfts in neonatal unit are
currently inadequately staffed. The levels ol appropriate nurse staffin8 are worse in NICUS Ilevel 31 at 66.5% compared to SCU5

sat15faction, burnout and intent to stay for neonatal nur5e5 in En8land and Wale5 which is conducted by Dr. Chant at UCL
Ichant, K. et 01.. 20241. The study receiveil a1rn05t 1,600 ￿SpOnse5 across Englond and Wales (Thank you to all of you who
participatedll, and currently undertaking statistical ¥natysis of the data. In this survey, more than 4￿ neonatal
nurses had additional comments which demonstTate their willirwiess to Sha￿ further information on their experiences,
however due to the nature of the study it was not possible io tlo this.
The aim of this study is the￿I0[e to expkjre nutses, experiences of being a neon￿1 nutse and their satisfaction, th8llen8es
and intent to stay.

My name is Robyn and I turrently work on a level 3 intensive tare neonatal unit in the North East of England as an Advanted
NÈonatal Nurse Practitioner. For the last 4.5 years I havÈ also wothtsd voluntarily for a tharity tallÈd Born on the Edge with th
NÈwborn Care Training Course group. WÈ are a group of nutsesldoctors based atross Sub-sahatan Africa and have developed
a 15 module training course for healthcare professionals in ￿b-S8h3ran Africa intluding topics such as resuscitation, fluids,
sepsis. We have currently taught this course to 750 heakhcare workers across Uganda, Kenya and Malawi. With the 8ward of
thls scholarship. I plan to attend a local centre in e￿¢her Uganda or Kenya to teach this course in

experience over the next 12 month5.
Prole55ional Development Scholarship- Richard Maraso
Neonatal Tran5POrt Scholarshipt funded by the Kate FaTher Fwndatio
This year's scholarship has been awarded to project-group of the Transport Special Interest Group to Breat a Toolkit to support
all transport teams acr05S the UK to embed Kana8roo Cuddle Posttion in Neonatal Transport. This was a Scholarship project
originally funded by the Kate Farrer Foundation in 2021. This scholarship will help di55eminate and ernbed this practice
promotin8 FICare and irnproved outcornes durin8 neonatal tronsters.

This year we launched our NNA Grants. These were offered to NNA member5 who had submitted an abstract to the COINN

The NNA has enjoyed another year of financial stability. supported consistently by the Journol of Neonutul Nursing. Income
from membership fees has increased, renectingthe appeal of our strengthened rnernber ofter and the value it provides.
This ha5 been a year of investrnent and 8rowth. We have invested directly in our rnember5 by awardin8 scholarships and
gr3nts throughout 2024125. In line with our enhanced offer. we reviewed aThd updated our reserves policyi while a150 working
to diversify income streams to safeguard financial resilience in what refflairb5 a challenging environrnent for charities.
Membership fee5 have been held at £45 for several year5 to rnaxirnise ac￿ssibility to the benefits of NNA mernber5hip.
However, to ensure lonE-terrn sustainability, we will need to considera modest Inc￿ase in the corning year.
De5Plte global and national pre55ures, including the Cost￿f-1lvin8 crisis and the Strain on the neonatal workforce, the NNA
performed strongly in 2024125. Our continued 8r¢￿th in membership is a te5tsment to the work we a￿ able to deliver with
your support.

Reserves pollcv
It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be malntèlned at
a level equlvalent to between three and six month's expenditure. The trustees conslder that reserves at this level will ensure
thar, In the event of a slgnlficènt drop in fundin& they will be able to continue the charity's current activlties whlle
consideration is given to ways in which addit￿nal lunds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintalned throughout
the year.

As we look ahead io the next 12 months, the NNA will enter a peric4J of listenin8 and review a5 we linalise our new three-year

"Accounting and Reporting by Charities." Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charlties preparlng their
accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republlc of Ireland IFRS 1021
