The Rettdin9 Room, High Stree¢ Turw, Bedfordslwe, MK43 8DB
Managed by volunteer committee, with uucial input from Preschool Leaderand staff. to malntain the key objecllve of
providing Eady Year5 Education and wrap aTound care tothe village to the h¥he5t Standard. Trustees a8reed by committee.
The aeademie year September 2022-2023 saw a new chapter in Turvey Pre-school Leadership.. Jodie
Finch as Leader and Rachel Eyres as deputy. They have worked tirelessly all academic year to ensure
the very high standards of care provided for the children was maintained. in addition to maintaining
a knowledgeable and experienced team. It ha5 been a very successful year. The Sprin8 term saw
Shelly, a long-standing member of staff. retire. Shelly played a pivotal role within the Preschool.
bringing fun and creativity to many actr'vities. She will be missed by staff and children. The number of
children usin8 the Preschool and before and after school club remained at a consistent level. It was
therefore important to recruit a new and experienced member of staff. An advert went out and
applicants applied. Natalie was appointed and joined the team in the Spring term. interviewing
Successfully and impressin8 the committee and stsff members with her qualifications and knowledge
of early years. Natalie has been a tremendous addition to the staffi'ng team and, supported by the
team. has settled into routines and activities brilliantly. Anna Packard. our linance and administrative
staff mernber, ha5 also enjoyed helping on an ad hoc ba51S With some sessions, and Nicky was also
recruited as a bank member of staff. both have built excellent relationships with Preschool Children.
A significant part of this academic year has been the visits from Ofsted. The fi'rst visit was incredibly
disappointing, the committee were missin8 some official paperwork, which therefore meant that the
whole Preschool was graded down as inadequate. A tough lesson learnt, re8ardin8 formall￿e$ of
committee organisation. A difficult start to the year, but the team rallied together to keep-up morale
and parents showed true understanding and support of the omission of paperwork. Thankfullv
Of5ted returned in the summer term and Turvey Pre-school was awarded a 'Good' Of5ted rating to
finish the academic year. A true refiertion of all the hard work that the team put in. Going forward
procedures have been put in place and learnt to ensure that the situation does not arise again, and
as committee members change, a rigorous proce55 is now followed.
Fundraising was consistently successful, seeing an autumn quiz tèke place for the wider communitv,
a presence at the first Bedfordshire Steam Fayre to take place at Turvey House and a tremendous
Toddle Waddle, which saw very generous donations from families and our annual easter egg trail. We
also used the expertise of Anna for annual photO8raphs, a percentage of proceeds donated to
Preschool. The Preschool nativity was also as successful as ever. The proceeds of these fundraising
initiatives have gone towards new resources and will also be used for future maintenance of the
building, specih"cally the repairin8 of Stonework and roof. We have obtained quotes for the
stonework and roof and have acknowledged that we must continue to fundraise over the course of
the next year. The possibility of obtaininE grants to assist in the expense of these large maintenance
C05tS 15 being explored.
We continue to focus on supporting the Child￿n.5 learning. Our ongoing focus on supporring all
children's communication and language skills is still in place and remains at the centre of many of our
activities. Jodie arranged a fire engine visit in the autumn term, which was a hugely popular activity

and a wonderful opportunity for children. The team have provided expert, high quality care and
opportunities for the children. Natslie has also brought new ideas and is currently undertaking her
level 4 qualilication. contr.nved staff training remain5 important to the staff team.
We conrinue to have strong links with our local school, Turvey Primary School, for whom we have
continued to run the before and after school club successfully. Before and after school club numbers
from both the Preschool children and Primary school children remain Sound. Children enjoyed a visit
from the Primary school ahead of their 5thool enrolment induction.
Preschool numbers remain stable, and on finishing the year many sessions are close to being full. A
number of children will be leaving for Primary school at the end of the summer term, however
numbers ¢ontinue to look to be stable for September, with new enquiries from familie5 being dealt
with for the autumn term. There are a number of younger children at Preschool currently who are
thought to be staying with Preschool for the next year or so. Marketing continues to be in place in
community new51etters and on social media. We also introduced our lirst stay and play morning for
prospective parents to see the Preschool in action. Group sizes are limited to ensure flexibility in
planning and allow the staff to respond to the children's individual needs and interests. Staff
continue to meet on Monday afternoon5 to di5cvss issues, plan training and plan for the coming
weeks. The staff team continues to be very strong.
All costs have increased and continue to. this includes staffing costs. utilities and maintenance. It is
an ongoing topic of conversation at committee meetings to do and source the best P055ible quote5,
introduce new ideas to help combat these challen8es. Isabelle and Anna remain diligent with their
monthly trackin8 of Preschool finances. and this has enabled the committee and leadership team to
have a much clearer idea of the year ahead.
One major change to background finances was completed this year with the moving over of the
reserve account funds from an old Natwest account that had long been almost ina¢ces5ible and was
becoming dormant, to a new account with the bank currently used by the Preschool. This means the
money will be accessible if needed. This is only for the cover of statutory redundancy costs and staff
pension payout in the event of Closu￿ of the business.
The committee has seen changes and it's been fantastic to welcome a breadth of ideas and
knowledge into the team, who are committed to continuing the success of the preschool, aiming to
manage linances, implement and support new, improvin8 ideas and support the team. In addition to
an active fundraising campaign. The committee and staff are continuing to plan for the next
academic year, with fundraising and marketing opportunities being discussed.
Madeleine Anderton, Chair of Turvey Pre-school Committee.
