OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and Aims
Tli¢ objecis for which The Cleveland Bay HoTSe Society is established are ￿ (l) encourJ8e the breeding and
improvem¢n¢ of horse5. Particularly the Cleyeland Bay: (2) io improve rhe gen￿al stsndaTds in the
Man￿￿emen[ use and treatment of horses generally, and of the Cl¢veland Bay Horse in particular, by
facilitating the distribution and iwuisition of knowledge dnd l¢arning among breeders. owners, judges,
v¢l¢rinorian%. trniners and members of the publi¢: (3) lo provide or assist in thc provi5iOD for the public
benefit. of facilities for recreation or other leisure time ￿cupatiOn, through the use of horses. but confined to
facililies provided in lh¢ interests of social welfare with the meaning and so as to satisfy the requirements of
the Recreaiional Charities Act 1958- and (4) io prevent cruelty to and promote the welfare of horses.

Ti]¢ provision of premiums w Cleveland Bay breeders encourages Cleveland Bay breeding and subsidises
bleeding costs. in order to improve breed population and genetic viability. Promoting the Cleveland Bay
throubyh the annual ￿g￿lIne, newsleit¢rs. shows and other direct promotion. including the website and
sncial media, provides a framework for Cleveland Bay breede￿ and ¢nthusiasis io engage with each other.

ACHIEVEMEwf AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
The chariiy. unfortunately. continues to battle with the cost-of-living crisis and the subsequeni effects this
hd% on the membership and breeding progrdms. Horse shows continue to provide Cleveland Bay classes,
wilh a couple of new shows bringing back ihe Cl¢velllnd Bay classes. Although enlry numbers were still
low, ur leslgi in part because of Ihe high cosi of fuel, numberq are slowly rising. The shows are a fanf&StiC
way io show c￿e our breed to the general public and equestrian world. We continue io provide a breed
sllind at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the Great Yorkshire Show, all of which generated interest and
revenues from merchandise gales. The s￿Iety ha4 raised a .4mall amouni of money through the sale of
calenda￿. The cost of the production kindly COV¢r￿ by a third party allowing the CBHS to receiv¢ the
full amount rni5ed. Although this is extremely generous. financially the CBHS n¢ed to increase th¢ fund
raising ￿ help further towatds the fjnancial requirements of the HBLB grant and the running costs of the
office.
We werc able to use ihe HBLB grdnt we secured in June 2024 ￿ provide suppon to br¢eders and hotse
show p￿rtIcIp￿nIS to promote the breed. Additsonal granL8 were offered to our bre¢deTS to help reduce the
aiiiount ot underspend from previous years. These grants were able io help lowards Ih¢ Collection and
sli)rnse of %emen from licenced bt#llions ¢0 preserve valuable genetics for future years.

Providing Fre¢ registrations for our overseas members remains 5ucce55ful along with breeding 8rants. The
rcgisrrations mu%t now be applied for within 6 month4 of age io bring ihe overseas registrations in line wilh
the DEFRA rules the UK abides by. Both have been received well.
As a s￿le[Y we continue to promotc go(Kl welfare practices and to provide all members and non- members
with access to inforniation provided by other organisations should ¢on¢ems arise regarding horse welfare.
Ihe LBH.3 have become a member of Ihe National Equine Welfare ChaTi(y {NEWC) wttich is an
organistaion solely for animal w¢lf4re. The organisauon provides valu¥ble infortnation. meetings and works
alongside a large number of equine chllrities, all with the same goal of promoting and supporting equine
enthusiasts about the importance of good animal welfare and provide correci procedure should concerns be
T]ie CBHS organisied and held Ihe firsi educational horse camp in 2024 for members and non-memben.
The camp w&$ designed to help provide fun educational lessons for owners with their horses of all abilities
and as¢ts and providc a v¢nu¢ for $ocittlizitts with fcllow Clcvclat)d Bay cnihu5Arist3. Thcrc was a totol of 21
bors&s thai uttended Somerford Camp for the weekend with the majority b¢ing Cleveland Bay& bowever. we
welcomed non Cleveland bay hors&s to the ev¢nt. All attending w¢re able io m4ke full us¢ of th¢ facilities ot
Somerford camp which included a farm rtde, outdoor arena and a cross Coun￿ course. All attending l￿d a
lesson from iwo fantastic iftstructor& tailored to rhe abiliiy of those participating. The HBLB funded the
in4tructors attending the event to provide education to those with horses either ridden or in hand. to gain
gre&ier confidence and encourage them tuke their hors¢¥ to shows or riding club ¢vents and promote and
marke( the bre¢d. The weekend wa5 a great succe&s and anoiher camp in 2025 ha$ been or8aniKd at a n¢w
Iocthion of Fields Farni.
Our membership currently stands at 196. this is broken down as 160 UK members and 36 Overseas from 5
different c()untrie&.
TnJqtreN continued to conduct council rneeting% via Z￿￿ throughoui 202412025. and f4 trAal of 9 Council
meetings were held. with approved minutes pos*d to our website for member ac¢ess.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Investment policy and objectives
The CBHS has the tM)wer to make any inYestsnenLS as authorised by the trustees.
Ruerves policy
li remains the policy of the company to maintain Un￿StrICted funds, which are the free reserves of the
charity. at u level ￿ provide sufficieni funds to cover management and administration costs. The adeqU￿Y
ot the reserves policy is reviewed annually.
Archive mgterigl
The Society holds a variety of ?￿h]ve matrrial that is not included in either fixed assets or stock as there i
nii known hislorical cost. A professional valuation of the material was conducied during ihe y¢ar ¢nded 31
May 2015 und i( was &8timated to be worth around £12.000. A $¢l¢¢iion of these items is currently stored at
th¢ North Yorkshire Records Office INYRO) and can be seen by prior arrangement.

support for our breedeTS With their breeding progrdmmes. We continue to look into modern advances in

Risk m*nagement
The society reviews risk at its council meetings and an accounts overview forms pan of these scheduled
meetings. The prin¢ip¥l identified risks haye included loss of revenue due to reduced numbers of passports
being i%5ued during the pandemic. Passport i55uance was improved in 2023124 and continues in 2024125.
The office conlinues lo be run and operaied by a volunt¢er. Council has started to invesligale how to future
proof the office operntion io ensure continued registrduon of ClevelaDd Bays and other equines and the
operaiion of Society bustness.

Purposes of unrestricted funds
Unitstricted funds comprise those funds which the trustees ar¢ free to use in accordance with the
