THE ANNUAL NATIONAL SERVICE FOR SEAFARERS IN ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL (ANSS)

TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR TO 31 DECEMBER 2023

Charity No: 292659

Address: 8 Hatherley Street London SW1P 2QT

Trustees: Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent KCB CBE (Chairman from 12 October 2023) Robert Woods CBE (Chairman until 12 October 2023) Captain Duncan Glass OBE (until 12 October 2023) Rear Admiral Nick Harris CB MBE Deborah Layde Alan Marsh MBE (from 16 February 2023) Captain Nigel Palmer OBE MNM (from 29 June 2023)

  1. The Charity (ANSS) was established under a Trust Deed dated 30 July 1985. Its objects are to:

  2. Hold an Annual Service for Seafarers in St. Paul's Cathedral.

  3. Encourage pupils at Reddam House Berkshire (previously Bearwood College), Pangbourne College, The Royal Hospital School Ipswich, The Royal School and the London Nautical School to become involved with maritime affairs by performing at the Service.

  4. Contribute to the upkeep of St. Paul's Cathedral.

  5. Trustees are appointed for a maximum of 2 x five-year terms with the Chairman being appointed from within the body of Trustees for a three-year term; new Trustees are normally selected from those organisations who directly support the ANSS. However, in view of the Charity Commission’s guidelines on Trustee Recruitment, Trustees will be reviewing the current process with a view to bringing it more in line with those guidelines.

  6. The administration of the ANSS is carried out by the Executive Department of The Seafarers’ Charity, assisted by Trinity House. Their annual charges are reflected in the accounts.

  7. During the year to 31 December 2023, the Charity held its annual service in St Paul’s on Wednesday 11 October. The Preacher was the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, the Bishop of London, and the congregation was estimated to be around 1900.

  8. The payment to St. Paul’s amounted to £9,637 of which £3,331 was offset by the collection.

  9. The Charity relies totally on donations to cover the costs of the Service and its reserves currently stand at just over £53k. However, the difference between income and expenditure indicates that the Charity will continue to use about £15k of its reserves annually to fund the Service. In view of this, the Trustees have agreed that reserves equating to 3-4 years of expenditure should normally be held and that this policy would be reviewed annually. Trustees have also implemented more proactive fundraising, which is already bearing fruit.

  10. The Service in 2024 will take place at 1700 on Wednesday 9 October.
