Our Volunleer.
The Society can only fiinctioii becaiise of the many unpaid volunteers who sit on the various committees or who
act as Regional and Area Rcpresentatives and give up untold hours to support the Society's aims. There are 9
Regions in the Society 5UPPOrted by area representatives and there are 4 Society Committees with a number of
committee members. There are also groups who look after the Active Donkey Award E￿d the Stud Book.

Public En¥agemEllt
?021 was a more active year thali 2020, biit still very rniich reduced from pre-covid year5. The London New
Year's Day Pande went ahead but on a dilTerent basis and the DBS (along with other animals} was unable to
L4ke part. Palm Sunday, Nativitv services, Parades, maiiy Shows and a great number of local evei)ts did not take
place due to the need, or wish. of members and the public to maintain social distancing. A new and highly
successful event in 20? I for the Society was taking part in 'Your Horse Live, This was a prestigious 3 day event
held in Stoneleigh. The Socielj. plus 4 donkeys, were present for all 3 days, along with the Society shop selling
donkey-related goods including educational books. An educational stsnd was present, talks ivere given by experts
in various donkey-related fields (such as donkey-specific foot care) and members who manned the stand had an
exhausting but highly productive time talking non-stop 10 a very wide ranging audience of the public.
Speci141 Qui4li¢ies
Donkeys have a wonderful ability to interact calmly and safely ivith members of Slxiety who have challenging
needs. Despite physical contact being restricted during mii¢h of 2021, those instances w,here it has been permitted
have been extra special and photographs of donkeys have brought much joy to those unable to get oiit gnd about.
For many, the interaction with their own donkqNs ai home has assisted greatly in relieving mentsl health isslles.
With more people exploring the Countryside, the numbers who have now 'met' these gentle creatures on new-
found walks has greatly increased and it is often reported that families now in¢liide adonkey visit on Iheir outings
as it brings them all so much pleasure to interact with donkevs, albeit over a fen¢e.
Regionul EngfigemeRI
RegFional Delegate5 and Area Representative5 Continue to be the grass roots of engagement with potential
members and the wider public. As Covid restrictions have lifted, soine areas have been able to hold socially
distanced day5, Inainly focusing on outdoor events such as walks or picnic5. There have been variations in leve15
of activity due to the personal confjdence leve15 of members regarding meetit]g others but generally some face
to lace. albeit socially distanced, activities have taken place.
Media Engagement
The Societ)J continues to produce an annual A4 colour magazine 'The Donkey, which is available lor public
purchase as well as Ihree editions of a members, publication 'Bray Talk, Newsletters are also produced in the
Regions. Copies of these are available io members and also often distributed to veis, farriers, feed merchants and
anyone M,ho has expressed an interest in learning more about donkeys. Each publication invites advertisements
and educational articles from stakeholder groups and includes infomiative articles from members as well as
coniaci details for members of Ihe public wishing to find out more.
1veb.sile UFEdSocial Medi
The Society Continues to engage with its members and the general public b). boih paper and online routes.
The website has links to social media applications, such as Facebook and Twitter which are regularly gccessed
by members and a miich ￿lder publi¢ audience. Whilst much of the information shared is demonstrating Correct
care and use of donkeys, this glso leads to a good deal of discussion and information sharing on best prgctices
amongst both members and non-members and is a valuable tool for rapid response to public enqiiiry. particularly
on welfare niatters.

EdHcatioM
A full range of proficiency tests are available to all ages to download from Liur website. These are noi restricted

for use in group events, specif1cally for our club membership which are often attached to schools, although they
are equall). useful for individuals. Our rgnge of other educaiional maierial includes the creation of online talks,

We continue to mgintsin an Educational Bursgry fund that is open to students, of any age, to assist with the
acquisition of books and publications or tools and equipmentthat would enable the student to improve the welfare

Our shop sells books and pamphlets concerning the care of donkeys, all of whicli are valuable tools to suppon
the welfare of tlie animal. We recognise that educatioii of the public is 50 fundamental to ensure a liealthy and
enjoyable lifesty'le foT donkeys: both in the United Kingdom and abToad.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Results
As disclosed in the accompanying accounts, Society fvnds rose in 2021 by £7,092 from £194,293 to £20 1,385.
Excludin¥ investment ¥ain5 aiid105St5 the re¥ular society activitie5 resulted in a deficit of £5,670 cotnpared with
£5,445 in the 2020. The level of deficit arising in 2021 ig one that the Trustees consider to be acceptable at this
time.
Incoine from passport issuing and transfer fees rose by 6.50/0 compared with 2020, althOu￿h additional costs
resulted in .just a l. l % increase in net income. Pa55POrt income continued to reflect a reduction due to the
discounting Me make in the fees for the issue of passports to The Donkey Sanctuary and other equine charities.
In 2021 this amounted to £1,178 {2020- £8821.
Subscription iiicoine also held up due to inore inember5hip income being Gift Aided.
With some of the relaxation of Covid rules more regional events and activities were able to be held. which with
income received from the sale of War Horse Memorial Purple Poppies and income generated by attending Your
Horse Live resulted in an increase of over £3,090 in the income from Society Shows and Activities.
Shop and Sundry Income rose by £2,868 in pan as we sold £1,4.f 8 of goods at Your Horse Live. In addition.
sales of Lhrisimas cards, books and DBS branded clothing increased bv £536.
Expenditure increased in a nuinber of related areas and a150 on Communication, reflecting the cost of
improvements to the Society website. They were partly offset by a fall in the cost of donations made to other
panies, reflecting Ihe one off nature of Ihe six £l.000 donations made 10 other equine sanctuaries in 2020 whose
income had beeii adver5elv affected by Covid.
None of the tropl)ies held by the Society are included at value in the financial statements, as the Trustees consider
that Ihey do not and would not generate income for Ihe Society and they do not have a market value.
Principal Source of Funding
The Society's principal source of funding comes from its members, either from their membership fees, passport
applications fees or entry tees and donations. These are supplemented by other donations and bequests which
are not relied on when budgeting tor ￿t￿re years.
Reserves Policy
The Trustees liave examined the charity requirements for reserves. During the year the Trustees have reviewed
the reserves policy and detemiined thai the minimum level of unrestricted funds not committed or invested in
tsngible fixed assets lield by the charity should remain at £12,000. At 31 December 2021 Ihis was covered 16.2
times12020- 12.0 tiines) by the general unrestricted reserves after deducting stock and tangible fixed assets.
The reserves are needed to me£t t]ie working capital reqiiiTeinents of the cliarits. and the Trustees are confident
that they w'ould be able to continue the nomial activities of the charity in the event of a significant drop in fu￿re
funding. c.onsideration is given each year, by tlie Trustees, as to what purpose any excess over tlie general
UTITestricted liquid ￿ndS target amount may be allocated to. No sucli allocations were Inade in 2021 as it had
been anticipated theTe would be a deficit on tlie vear and a deficit lias also been budgeted for in 2022. At 31
December 2021 a total of £38,909 was allocated to designated purposes, including regional and area activities
and education.

The charity's tTU5tees have ultimate responsibility for risk aiid so have regularly reviewed and assessed the
