Godalming Museum Annual Report 2025-26

An exciting year of growth and additional appointments for the Museum!

We were delighted to have been under the careful guidance of curator, Ellie Whitelaw until February this year whilst our curator, Rhiannon Jones was on maternity leave. We are all very grateful for her super contribution, always friendly, dynamic, experienced and made a big impact on all the volunteers, the visitors and the trustees throughout her tenure. We wish to acknowledge and thank Ellie for her contribution to the Museum over the last year. Very clear - by the lovely event and widely attended following her departure from the Museum. We wish Ellie well with her future ventures.

We are equally delighted to welcome Rhiannon back and so pleased and totally reassured to see back her ‘in control’ after her Maternity leave.

We also said goodbye to Louise Roff, our Museum Assistant who had shown so much passion for the Museum over the many years she has worked here. Again, we wish her well and thank her for her valuable contribution to the running of the Museum.

We now welcome Millie Dodd who joined us following Louise’ departure and not only she assists with the Museum’s curatorial tasks but voluntarily gets involved with organising the fund-raising activities notably the lecture series, and the marketing of these. It has been a pleasure to have Millie join us with her expertise.

A new addition to the team (and a brand new role!) is our Education Officer, Annette Hetherington who commenced her role in May. Annette works 3 days a week and her role will be responsible for developing, delivering and promoting high quality learning engagement activities that increase access to and participate in Godalming Museum’s collections and stories. Her role is leading on education and outreach whilst contributing to the day-totoday operation of the Museum. She will plan, deliver and evaluate structured learning activities including school workshops, loan boxes, family events and tours. Annette has already commenced happily and successfully with these tasks having only been with us a few weeks, and we are so very grateful to the Godalming Town Council for entirely supporting the Museum with this new role, which is so important for our outreach programme, building relationships with schools, community groups and other partner organisations, taking the Museum beyond its physical site, including programming that reflects the diversity of this local community.

We wish all the best support for Annette as she embarks on this new role.

New Trustee

During the last year three new trustees, Sarah Dickinson, Vicki Bradley and Sarah Kelly, who have formally been appointed as Trustees. We are delighted to have been joined more recently by a further new trustee, David Williams who was appointed earlier in the year. David had recently become a volunteer at the Museum and has been keen to be more involved with the Museum over time. Historically David was Bursar at Charterhouse School, and previously notably a trustee of Cranleigh School, Royal Holloway College and we are delighted to welcome and his deep expertise to the board and he has already made a super impact.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 March 2026 (continued)

New Trustee (continued)

To recap concerning our other new recruits, Sarah Dickinson is currently chairman of the Surrey Gardens Trust, Vicki Bradley is the Alumni Relations Manager at King Edward’s School Witley and Sarah Kelly, Executive Director of Prime Residential based in London. Each of the new trustees bring their extensive knowledge of fund raising, membership and organisational skills to the Board in order to boost the fund-raising projects needed to take the Museum to the next stage. Each enthusiastic to be involved with the Museum we are excited to have them all on board.

Lecture Series

In terms of events thanks hugely to our Volunteer Coordinator, Viv Ellis and her team for coordinating these n behalf of the trust, the trustees have sought to boost the number of lectures/ events per annum to one per month now, all held at the Wilfred Noyce Centre. Numbers of attendees are increasing from 60 upwards, which with an increase in ticket prices has created a nice profit per lecture, both raising awareness for the Museum and boosting our much needed income.

We were very pleased to welcome back Julian Humphrys, who gave a fascinating lecture, Mary Toft, the Rabbit Woman of Godalming. Hilary Underwood presented a lecture on Surrey Artists, which included Constable, Turner, Pre-Raphaelites, Watts and many others who all harnessed Surrey’s picturesque landscapes – a detailed potted history of art painted in Surrey. Most recently a lecture given by Professor Craig Underwood – Power to the People, first public streetlighting in the world – the lecture was a detailed story of the electricity revolution and in particular the part Godalming played in pioneering the future.

Other notable events included and interactive day – Operation Morse! - on 11 April to celebrate Jack Phillips birthday at the Museum demonstrating electronic communications from Morse Code to worldwide radio operators who talked to our visitors. Basis Morse code was taught and certificates awarded with 209 visitors taking part.

The Gruesome Godalming Walks, thanks to Hilary underwood were so oversubscribed subscribed that these events needed to be doubled in number!

A super fund-raising event hosted by Andy Jeffery, Town Clerk – The Great Godalming Quiz- Off filled the Wilfred Noyce Centre, and thanks must be given to Andy and Viv Ellis for organising such a big event. Also thanks for the many super donations of raffle prizes from all the Godalming Businesses who so kindly contributed, all adding to community spirit. The next quiz is on 18 September this year.

The Gallery has held regular displays and hosted book launches during the course of the year, including Blue Sky Artists, Ingrid Skoglund and Liz Calthorpe and Resonance, an exhibition of fluid acrylic paintings on canvas that blur boundaries between land, sea and sky inspired by rhythms of nature and the vastness of the universe.

Numbers of Visitors

There have been 9466 visitors during the year ended 2026, 154 school, 707 using loan boxes, 505 attending talks and events, 200 library enquiries and 1250 volunteer visits, numbers all up from the previous year.

The Shop

The shop continues to provide valuable financial support to the projects of the Museum including increasing footfall by an increasing display of books, Godalming related products, including the addition of local Stephen Dean’s ‘Winton Dean’s Memories of Hambledon’ and other well regarded historical titles. Other introductions include beautiful home décor all very popular and adding to a warm happy arrival at the Museum. Sue Janaway had gifted the copyright of John’s book to the Museum - A short History of Godalming – although now out of print. A proposed

reprint of the book including receiving a generous Grant from both the Godalming Trust and the Godalming Town Council should cover the printing costs and will boost the shop’s sales.

Footfall in November and December in particular was up to 2028 We also planning shopping evenings for Friends, Volunteers and Town council staff with a small discount offered to new Friends. A valuable source of income to the Museum, with thanks to Viv for curating such a lovely collection.

Acquisitions

The Museum is enormously grateful to Mandy Le Boutillier who during the course of the year in order to commemorate the 40[th] Anniversary of the discovery of Titanic’s wreck where Jack Phillips body lies, and to mark the end of Mandy’s initial 3-year loan of 25 cards from her collection of Jack Phillips correspondence with his sisters to the Museum , she has decided so generously to donate the 25 cards to the Museum. This represents probably the most important donation the Museum has received for many decades.

To celebrate this wonderful donation and to honour much loved Freeman of Godalming, John Young the Museum Resources Room has been formally re-named the John Young Room. John was responsible for a huge amount of the planning and building which resulted in the Museum as we know it today- he was also a Titanic enthusiast a who spent years assisting Mandy with her research and building up his own large collection of maritime and Titanic related memorabilia.

The opening of the John Young Room was marked by an event where many generations of John Young’s family were able to attend. A plaque unveiled on the Wall was presented by Mandy.

It goes without saying, the Museum, the Trustees and community at large are so enormously grateful to Mandy for such an important donation to the Museum and also to Mandy for her ongoing commitment to the Museum generally.

Fund raising

The Trustees are planning numerous fund-raising activities starting with once-a-month events to boost the income for the Trust with the expectation of now reducing the deficit significantly. The new fund-raising committee has been established consisting of members of the trustees, volunteers and friends of the Museum with a view to creating a new Platinum Friend arrangement and a new Corporate Sponsorship package which is just about to be launched. A ‘tap and touch column ‘has been acquired for donations at the Museum to enable donations to be made more easily.

A number of evening events are being planned for July to be held at Museum including a drinks reception hosting the Godalming Chamber of Commerce on 2 July. During the last month a recital presented by Soprano Imogen Rowe, and William Edwards (piano) was hosted at Rake Court in Milford with thanks to Alan and Caroline Bott with all proceeds being given the Museum. 80 people attended and the funds raised are being established.

The Museum has received donations from the Freddie Green Foundation amounting to £5,000, a donation from the Sidney Sanders Charitable Trust towards the repair of the Museum’s clock amounting to £2,000 and a further larger donation from family trust is due to be received in the next two months. The Museum has gratefully received legacies from the estates of Mary Pagan and Jean Raper, both passionate and long-term supporters of the Museum.

Fund raising (continued)

The aim of the Trustees is to turn around the deficit, boost the awareness of the Museum in the town, grow the educational programme opportunities, and increase the footfall in the Museum by creating new events. Our increased social media presence, better website is making a difference especially amongst younger families and schools.

The Trustees of the Museum are thankful to so many wonderful supporters from the community who volunteer with all elements of the running and attending the Museum, which without their support one cannot imagine how the Museum can function.

The largest appreciation of thanks must go to all the Councillors at the Godalming Town Council for the total commitment financially and moral support given to the Museum, in particular Andy Jeffrey, the Town Clerk whose advice to trustees is invaluable. The support of our new Education Officer will make a huge difference to the awareness of the Museum, and we look forward our ongoing partnership.

Review of financial activities and results

The Museum recorded a small surplus on its normal operating activities of £3,544, i.e. before a significant unrealised gain on our investments.

This result was aided by the receipt of two legacies totalling £6,000 and a healthy income from our investments. The Museum shop also continues to be an essential source of income with improved gross takings and profit margin over the previous year.

The Trustees continue to invest in improvements to the Museum which should in turn lead to increased footfall and awareness of the Museum and its activities.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF GODALMING MUSEUM TRUST

I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 March 2026 which are set out on pages 6 to 14.

Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

The charity’s Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination it is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and the seeking of explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘’true and fair view’’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of any independent examination; or

  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other mattes in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
