Thecharity's20thconference(symposium)tookplacebetween7 and10February2021,on-line.Thisevent was
originallyscheduledtobehostedattheHarrogateConferenceCentreinJuly2020.Duetothe government
restrictionsand'lockdowns'imposedduring2020,theeventwaspostponed.TheTrusteesconsideredat length
theoptionssurroundingpostponementandprogressinganonlineevent.Muchoftheplanningtookplace in
2019,supportedbyfurthersignificantworktoadapttheeventtobeaccessed,withparticularreferenceto the
scientific programme, technical exhibition and workshops.
```

Theconferenceprogrammeconsistedoftheusualkeynoteaddressesandplenarysessions,alongwith parallel
andprofferedpapersessions,satellitesymposia,workshopsandposters.Opportunitieswereretained for
delegatestoseethelatestdevelopmentsin imaginganddiagnosticproceduresonline.Thecharity,aspartof its
enthusiasmto widen the scopeof the event,continuedto collaboratewith the Associationof BreastClinicians to
helppromotegreaterexchangeofknowledgeanddebatewithintheconference.Theconferencealsohosted a
session run by the Association of Breast Surgery, as part of an established reciprocal arrangement started in 2017.
```

The OrganisingCommitteefor the 2021event was chairedby Mrs ClaireBorrelliand vice chair,Dr Sarah  Tennant,
bothtrustees.TheCommitteeismadeupoftrusteesaswellasinvitedmembersfromarangeofdisciplines to
complement the core team and enhance the conference programme.
```

Overall,theeventprovedtobeverysuccessfulinattractingover650delegates,withagreatdealof positive
feedbackregardingtheonlinedelivery.Delegateswelcomedtheopportunitytoparticipateatatime when
movementandgatheringrestrictionswerein force.Theuseofup-to-datetechnologyhadenabledcolleagues to
interactwithspeakersanddiscusssessiontopics.TheTrusteesareindebtedtothedelegates(andtheir funding
agencies,primarilythe NHS)formakingthe timeto takepartwhenthe healthservicewasunder unprecedented
pressure,andtoalloursponsorsandexhibitors,withoutwhichthestagingofthiseventwouldnothave been
possible.
```

## **`Working with other organisations`**

Areciprocalarrangementhostingasessionateachother'seventsisnowestablishedwiththeAssociation of
BreastSurgery(ABS).InMay2019,SymposiumMammographicumaddressedtheABSconferencebyhosting a
parallelsession,andwilldosoagainattheACCLiverpoolon16-17May2022.DuetoCovid-19restrictions, the
ABSeventin2021wasonline,withnoparallelsessions,whichprecludedtheprovisionofabreast radiology
session by the Charity.
```

ThecharityembeddeditssupportfortheSocietyofRadiologistsinTraining(SRT)byholdingaseriesof breast
biopsyworkshopsattheirannualconferenceinMay2019inCardiffbuttheCovid-19pandemicledto the
cancellationof their conferencein 2020.However,the charityhad given a Breast2B FellowshipViva workshop at
their 2021 event on the 13-14 June, online.
```

SymposiumMammographicumwaslastabletopromoteitsworkattheUKIO(UKImagingand Oncology)
ConferenceinJune2019inLiverpool,atwhichbreastbiopsyworkshopstookplaceovertwodays.The UKIO
extendedtheir generosityby providingexhibitionstand space to the charity.Due to the pandemic,their 2020 and
2021conferencestookplaceonline,and it waslogisticallytoochallengingto run workshops.However,plans are
in to run workshops at their 2022 event at the ACC Liverpool.
```

Workalso continuedduring 2021to progressopportunitiesto workwith the Associationof BreastPathology, the
SocietyofRadiographersandorganisersoftheUKInterdisciplinaryBreastCancerSymposium(UKIBCS).The last
organisationhasappointedDrMichaelMichelltobeSymposiumMammographicum'srepresentative,with Dr
VinnicombealreadyontheUKIBCScommittee.Again,relatedtothepandemic,theUKIBCSwasplanningto hold
theirconferenceonlineinJanuary2022atwhichthreelecturesonbreastradiologywereincluded, with
Symposium Mammographicum being formally recognised as a co-sponsor.
```

ThecharityreceivessupportfromanumberofclinicianswhohavejoinedtheCOC,whoprovide additional
expertisetodevelopthescientificprogrammeforthebiennialconference.Thetrusteesaregratefulforthe time

SymposiumMammographicumpromotesanAwardschemeofup to£2,500eachforradiologists, radiographers
orothermembersofthediagnosticbreastteamresidingandworkingintheUnitedKingdom.Thesecan consist
eitherof an EducationalAward- to take up a secondmentat a recognisedcentrein the UK or overseasto study  a
particularaspectof breastimagingpractice,ora ResearchAward- toundertakea smallresearchproject related
to breastimaging.The aim of the Awardsis to supportwork which will contributeto improvementin the practice
of breast imaging in the UK.

Mammographicum conference).

studybyanobservationalclinicalattachmentinaspecialisttrainingcentreintheUnitedKingdomovera period
ofoneortwoweeks,ortofacilitateattendanceattheSymposiumMammographicumconference.The bursary
schemeis also now open to certaingroupsof peoplewithin the UK to apply for funding to attendthe Symposium
orundertakeaclinicalobservationplacement.Eligiblegroupsincludepublic/patientrepresentatives, and
professionals/studentslookingtoreturntoworkafteracareerbreakorenterthebreastspecialismwithin the
radiography or radiology disciplines.

Two applicants - both from London -were funded to attend the postponed online conference in February 2021.

ThetrusteescontinuedtoreviewwaysofpromotingtheAwardandBursaryschemesviaweb-based directories
and on the websitesof supportiveorganisationswhichholdsimilarobjectivesto Symposium Mammographicum.
This has included support from the Higher Education Institutes to help attract radiography students.

## **`Investment policy and objectives`**

The trusteesregularlymonitorthe return on the savingsaccounts,noting the interestrate and potentialaccess to
thereserves,andtakeabalancedapproachgiventhedegreeofriskinarrangingconferences.Following the
trustees'consideredreviewofinvestmentsfrommid-2015tolate2016withguidancefrominvestment advisors
(Sanlam),itwasdecidedtomaintainthecurrentinvestmentprofile,withthecaveatthatregular benchmarking
studiesto compareinterestrateswouldbe undertakento maximisethe return.Such a reviewwas undertaken in
2017fromwhichtrusteessupportedthetransferoffundsfromthethencurrentsavingfacilitiesto different
bankswhichofferedmoreattractiveinterestrates.Thisexercisewascompletedinautumn2017. Performance
wouldbesubjecttoreviewtoensurethecharitywasabletosecureacompetitivereturnon investment,
balanced against risk and accessibility to its reserves. This aspect is considered regularly by the Trustees.

Thetrusteesareconsciousoftheneedtooptimisethelevelofreservesthecharityhasatitsdisposal. In
consideringthelevel,attentionhasfocusedonthecharity'soperationalneeds,notingthesignificant up-front
costs(andresultantpotentialrisk)in settingup a conference.Regardwasalsopaidtotheperceptionof risk and
effectsthatexternalinfluencescouldhaveonincome(forexample,delegatenumbers,exhibitionsize and
income,venuecosts,economicclimate,reputation),mindfulofthecharity'sobjectsandtheir continuing
relevance.AsummaryreviewoftheReservesPolicywasundertakenin2017andadetailedreview was
completed in 2021 to reflect the change in circumstances arising from the pandemic.
Financial Management Review
Trusteesintroducedamorerobustsetofmeasurestoprovidegreaterclarityonthecharity'sstanding and
financialrobustness,in tandemwith the reservespolicyand strategy.Followingdetaileddiscussionsto consider a
range of options,longerrange forecastingovera two year cyclehas been adoptedto help provideassurance and
highlightany riskswith the projectedand committedexpenditurecounteredby incomelevels,basedon financial
cycleofpastconferences.Aspartofminimisingcoststothecharity,Trusteesagreedtoalternateits quarterly
meetingsbetweenmeetinginpersonandusingonlinevideoconferencing.Trusteesaregratefulto fellow
trustee,MsBurchforprovidinghervaluedsupportbyenhancingthewayfinancialinformationisnow being
