## **World Orthopaedic Concern UK**

## **Chairman’s Report: June 2025 – June 2026**

As we advance further into the post-pandemic era, World Orthopaedic Concern UK (WOCUK) has transitioned from merely consolidating our return to in-person activities to actively driving strategic global health partnerships and fostering the next generation of orthopaedic leaders. This past year has been defined by a renewed vigor in global collaboration, marked by competitive educational accolades, thriving trainee involvement, and a deepening relationship with our national specialist societies.

## **Advancing Trainee Leadership and Educational Exchange**

A core pillar of WOCUK’s mission remains our commitment to supporting upcoming orthopaedic surgeons through targeted bursaries and travel grants. Our collaboration with the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA), coordinated seamlessly via our joint trainee sub-committee, continues to expose exceptional trainees to the realities and structural challenges of Orthopaedics and Trauma in low- and middleincome countries (LMICs).

This year, our joint selection process underscored the incredible global appetite for research and clinical exchange. I am delighted to highlight the **2025 WOC-UK Trainee BOA Travelling Fellowship** , which attracted an exceptionally competitive pool of international applicants. The award was presented to **Dr. Elodie Gloria Ewolo Sike** from Cameroon for her outstanding prospective comparative study:

_“Modified Masquelet Technique for Infected Segmental Long Bone Defects in a LowResource Setting of Sub-Saharan Africa: A Prospective Comparative Study from Cameroon.”_

This fellowship funds Dr. Sike's travel, visa, and accommodation to attend and present her vital research at the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Annual Congress in Liverpool. To maximize the clinical value of this fellowship, WOCUK has facilitated a clinical observership for Dr. Sike at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. This initiative bridges the gap between scientific presentation and practical, cross-border clinical exchange, enriching both our host institutions in the UK and our partner sites in Sub-Saharan Africa.

## **National Congresses and Strategic Partnerships**

WOCUK has maintained a formidable presence across major national orthopaedic milestones over the preceding months. Our engagement at the **BOA Annual Congress in Liverpool** provided a vital forum for global health advocacy, drawing excellent attendance to our dedicated WOC sessions and driving recruitment for our global health ambassador cohorts.

WOC-UK has consolidated partnerships with other subspecialty organisations in an attempt to coordinate the governance of global outreach programmes. Our partners

in this venture are the BSSH, BOFAS, BOOS, BSCOS, BHS, BOTA and BOMFA. We are proud to be organising the first Principles of Orthopaedic care in Low and Middle income environments in June, ahead of our annual conference on the theme: **Stronger Together** .

Concurrently, our efforts to formalize a unified **Global Health Orthopaedic Strategy** in tandem with the BOA are progressing. While navigating the bureaucratic complexities inherent to large-scale institutional frameworks takes time, we remain resolute in establishing a cohesive national strategy to align specialist societies, streamline clinical educational delivery, and eliminate the fragmentation or duplication of UK-led overseas aid efforts.

## **Looking Ahead**

As we reflect on the challenges of the past year—ranging from strict international visa and administrative bottlenecks faced by our overseas fellows to global financial and geopolitical uncertainties—the resilience of our network remains our greatest asset. The appetite for specialized programs in LMICs, specifically in sub-specialties like Musculoskeletal Oncology, Hand Surgery, and Arthroplasty, is growing exponentially.

WOCUK is uniquely positioned to act as the conduit for this knowledge exchange. Through the continued stewardship of our committee, our robust partnerships with BOTA and the BOA, and the inspiring dedication of our global fellows, we look forward to expanding our impact, refining our remote educational frameworks, and championing equitable orthopaedic care worldwide.
