Scouts Isl CopthprTrp Annual Report 202¥24 1ST COPTHORNE
Message from our
Group Lead Volunteer
The year started upon the stage at The Hawth Theatre with our first gang show in over four years. And what a fantastic show the young people put on with support from the new Gang Show Steering Committee, Leaders, Exec and SASU.
We had a good attendance at Go Beavers, we entered 3 teams in the district marathon event, we entered a float in the Copthorne carnival which won 1st prize. We held a group activity day to celebrate 70th years of Copthorne scouts and we entertained the senior citizens of Copthorne in February.
All sections had an opportunity to do a night away, with Beavers sleepovers, Cub summer camp, Cub sleepover at Chatham dockyards and Scouts summer, Survival and Easter camps.
All sections ran fun and varied programmes and a big thank you to all the leaders for the time and effort they put into to make it all happen.
We held 3 jumble sales, our annual firework night, ran 3 stalls at carnival and a stall at the Christmas market. A big thank you to the Group Exec for organising and running these events as without them the subs would be much higher.
A big thank you to SASU who have again this year supported the sections by attending events and section nights and also helping support the Exec by attending jumble sales and bonfire night.
And finally thank you to the parents for their continuing support over the last year it has been great to see some new faces at jumble sales and carnival.

Copthorne Scout Active Support Unit
The Copthorne Scout Active Support Unit continues to give much needed support to the Scout Leaders and Scout Group Executive at both group events and direct to the sections.
The leaders in the sections give so much time to providing the marvellous programme of activity which we see in all the sections. The Active Support Unit has again been there to provide all the support it can to ease the load on the leaders.
By giving support at activities and events during the year we enable the leaders to spend more time concentrating on the vital role for which they are trained .
The Copthorne Scout Active Support have this year supported the Group’s fund raising at Jumble Sales, Bonfire Night and the Carnival. We have given direct help to the section’s activities on Sports Day, and assistance at Cub Camp. Members have also given back up to section meetings and the provision of second-hand uniforms to those that need them.
We would ask every parent or guardian of the wonderful children that are part of the Copthorne Group to consider if they could just help in a small way our valiant leaders.
Being a member of the Active Support Unit is the best way to achieve this without becoming over committed. No member of the Scout Active Support is expected to do everything. They help when they can and when they want to, but through the team communication they are able to know what help is required and when it is needed.
We need to increase our pool of members so that we can be more effective, for the benefit of your children.
As parents we must remember that all leaders are unpaid volunteers who give untiringly of their time to be trained so that they can provide the best Scouting experience. By registering with the Copthorne Scout Active Support you can, within your own limitations, support their tasks and show your appreciation of all that they achieve. Executive / Trustee’s Report
This year we have been in the middle of transformation from Executive Committee to a Board of Trustees.
Our role is to ensure that scouting is carried out in a safe environment and with suitable equipment, to be able to offer the young people a balanced and varied programme. The Executive committee takes the lead in the fundraising events and other activities throughout the year.
We have again had a good year with fund raising running the three jumble sales the carnival stall and the family bonfire and fireworks. The scout centre is being used regularly by external hirers, which brings in a regular income.
I would like to thank all the executive members for their hard work and support during the last financial year. I would especially like to thank John Dawson for his hard work and dedication in looking after the group’s finances. John has again ensured that we are getting the best returns on our investments.
The leaders have again delivered a varied and challenging program to the young people.
Thank you, Owen and all the leaders, for your dedication.
I would like to thank Gwyn and Christine Cheesmur for their work in submitting the documents for the planning permission for the improvements planned to the Scout Centre. These works are being funded by section 106 money from Heathy Wood. We are waiting for landlord’s consent before work can start.
Thank you, to the parents that have given their time to help the sections and with fund raising.
