THE FRIENDS OF JULIAN OF NORWICH Easter Newsletter 2022
A Message from the Chair, Shirley Buxton CJN
Dear Friends & Companions,
“God did not say, ‘You shall not be tempest-tossed,’ but he said ‘You will never be overcome’.”
These wise words from Julian’s 16th shewing have been in my mind for the last few days as the reports came in of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They are words written on some of the bookmarks enclosed with ’40-Day Journey with Julian of Norwich’, the reading for our online Lent Course. We cannot walk in someone else’s shoes, feel their sorrows and joys, experience their pain and delight but we can be with them through prayer, joined in the surety of God’s love and presence. The call has gone out across the world to pray for those plunged into a war-torn chaos, a situation far beyond my experience and understanding, to pray they may know of God’s love in their distress and the conflict speedily resolved.
Through Julian’s writings we hear the clear message of God’s steadfast love for us, an unchanging love always there in times of trouble as well as times of joy. It is a love that cannot be broken even in the darkest moments. Assured that we are held securely in this way enables us to have the confidence to explore our inner selves, to change and to grow. ’A 40-Day Journey with Julian of Norwich,’ opens up an opportunity to do just this and by the time this letter reaches you, many of you will have embarked on this journey led by passages from Julian’s Revelations of Divine Love. We are so fortunate to have modern technology to allow Friends on different continents to participate.
The roll out of vaccines together with a relaxation of Covid restrictions meant that Friends of Julian could gather in person for our Julian October Retreat with Emma Pennington. We also decided to offer an opportunity to join the retreat online, a dual practice which we aim to continue with future events. At the forthcoming Julian Festival in May we plan to welcome Friends to the Festival Eucharist and the Annual Julian Lecture online as well as in person.
Most of the Trustees’ meetings have been online but we did manage two in person meetings in the autumn. The second of these Meetings included a half day workshop. We considered how various changes brought about by the Covid pandemic, the evolution of the Julian Partnership and the exciting

developments on the Julian Campus have impacted on the future of the Friends of Julian of Norwich. Having agreed that the wording of our objectives continues to be accurate, our discussions included reviewing our welcome pack, making it easier for people to become a subscribing Friend of Julian, projecting the Julian Shrine to the world and equipping us to be an effective worldwide organisation. In the last year we have embraced many challenges and opportunities. We plan to build upon what we have experienced and learnt.
On your behalf I would like to thank to all the Trustees, for their generosity in giving their time, commitment and expertise. A special thanks to Peter Colback who is standing down as a Trustee at the AGM. Over the past few years, Peter has created a new website that gives the Friends of Julian scope to reach out to members and others seeking knowledge about Julian and her writings. We are grateful that Peter has offered to keep in touch and give us help and advice when it is necessary. Thanks
also to our secretary, Howard Green, who is undertaking training so he can oversee the running of the website.
In January it was a pleasure to welcome Josiah English and his wife Jo as he took up his post as House Steward in All Hallows House. With them came their doves and quails. All seem to be settling in well. A couple of days ago Josiah showed me around the house. The upstairs work is virtually finished and downstairs the kitchen is now fitted and much of the painting completed. It is beginning to look splendid. We look forward to everything being finished and visitors being welcomed.
I urge you all to become involved in the Julian650 Celebrations next year acknowledging the anniversary of Julian’s Shewings that led to her writing ‘Revelations of Divine Love.’ It is an opportunity for us all to arrange events to spread her message of God’s love for all people.
May we all welcome the love, peace and joy of Easter.
Shirley Buxton, CJN

LIFE AT ST JULIAN’S
NEWS FROM FR RICHARD STANTON, PRIEST DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
The cell at St Julian’s is dominated by the great crucifix suspended on the wall above the altar. It was carved by the German sculptor Faust Lang (1887-1973), the gift of the Community of All Hallows to the rebuilt church in the 1950s.
Born in Oberammergau, famous for its Passion Play, Lang emigrated to England in 1934 and settled in St Ives in 1949. I find his powerfully expressive crucifix at St Julian’s profoundly moving, not least when I climb a ladder each year on the Saturday afternoon before the Fifth Sunday of Lent and shroud it in a great purple cloth for Passiontide, my arms stretching to reach the cloth around that massive sign of the ‘breadth and length and height and depth… the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge’.
The veiling of the crosses in the church during Passiontide is one of the psychological devices with which we mark the season of intense preparation for our celebration of the
Christian Passover: as the physical crucifix disappears from sight, we test what impression the Cross of Jesus has made on our hearts and minds.
Whenever you or I trace the sign of the cross on our bodies in public worship or private prayer, on entering a church or seeing a funeral cortège, we express both our confidence in the saving power of the Cross and our desire to make the life-giving Cross a reality in our daily lives. ‘I want to know Christ,’ said St Paul, ‘and the power of his Resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death’: those, too, are the words, in a different translation, on the fourth Station of the Cross in St Julian’s, where the Lord meets his sorrowful Mother. One of the lovely hymns for the evenings of Passiontide articulates the hope which Christian people place in the Cross:
When kindly slumber calls thee, Upon thy bed reclining,
Trace thou the Cross of Jesus, Thy heart and forehead signing.

LIFE AT ST JULIAN’S (continued...)
The Cross dissolves the darkness, And drives away temptation; It calms the wavering spirit
By quiet consecration.
It is good that the cell at St Julian’s should be dominated by the crucifix, since for Julian the Cross is the supreme manifestation of the love of God towards his people. She knew that nothing can separate us from the love of God made visible in Christ. ‘Lo, how I loved thee’ are the words cut into the stone beneath the crucifix
on the 1930s memorial to Julian in her cell. As we prepare for Holy Week and our immersion in the Paschal Mystery, each of us can hear those words addressed to us personally and corporately: ‘Lo, how I loved thee.’
May you and I strive this Passiontide to receive that love more gladly, and so come by way of Christ’s Passion and Cross to the glory of the Resurrection. Yours faithfully in our crucified and risen Lord, Fr Richard
THE JULIAN PARTNERSHIP FROM THE SECRETARY, HOWARD GREEN
The Friends of Julian are one of the founder partners of the Julian Partnership, along with Norwich Cathedral, the Parish of Timberhill, the Diocese of Norwich, and the Community of All Hallows. In the last year the Partnership has been making strides in laying the foundations for giving further impetus to the regeneration and renewal of the Julian Campus – the Church with the Cell, the Churchyard/Garden, the Julian Centre and All Hallows House in Norwich. A great deal of work has gone into setting up the banking arrangements, recruiting volunteers to serve as Treasurer and Secretary, articulating plans up to and including May 2023, the 650th anniversary of Julian’s shewings, finalising the leases on the two buildings, and formalising the loan of the Friends’ libraries.
The brightest spots of the year have undoubtedly been the arrival and work of Edwin Wilton-Morgan, curate at Norwich Cathedral with a dedicated role at St Julian’s Church, and Josiah English as resident House Steward at All Hallows House. Edwin has been enriching the worship and communal life around the Shrine, engaging positively with nearby organisations and particularly the nearby Primary School. Josiah, joined by his wife Jo, have taken the bold step of moving into All Hallows House before all the building work has been completed and is planning how to make it sustainable financially and fostering it as a place of intentional community, welcome to pilgrims and service to the locality.
Truth be told, however, a very great deal of work and effort this last year has had to go into addressing the refurbishment requirements of both the Julian Centre and All Hallows House. The Community of All Hallows has been exceedingly generous in their response as work and budget have been repeatedly overrun as new building requirements have been identified. Revd Richard Stanton and supporting colleagues from the Partnership Board have worked tirelessly in the teeth of the pandemic to get the two buildings open to the public as soon as possible.

THE JULIAN CAMPUS
FROM THE RESIDENT STEWARD IN ALL HALLOWS, JOSIAH ENGLISH
Greetings from Norwich!
My wife Jo and I arrived in this fine city from Birmingham to take up residence at All Hallows House on 17 January. Accompanying us on our move were our flock of quail and bevy of doves, who have taken to Norwich with the same enthusiasm that we have. We are settling in quickly, not only to the flat upstairs at the back of All Hallows but also to the city itself.
The church community in our parish has been extremely welcoming, making us feel wanted and loved in our new home, and we have fallen in love with this vibrant, creative city which manages to offer shops, amenities and eateries catering for every – even our own esoteric – taste.
Meanwhile, I have also been settling into my role as Resident Steward, which presently includes chivvying the builders along as well as disaster avoidance measures to avert ill-considered aesthetic decisions made through a miscommunication between subcontractors!
Since our arrival we have cleared out and cleaned up the loft space and sheds, and begun work taming the garden. After a few slow months of building work, I am pleased to announce that the pace has picked up and great strides have been made since our arrival. The bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs are completed; the new kitchen has been fitted and commissioned; and even as I write, the flooring in the hallway downstairs is being laid and new foundations set to widen the exterior doorway for wheelchair access.
The painters will conclude their work next week, and the finishing touches inside should be done within a fortnight. Behind the scenes I have been preparing our online booking system so that when the works are finished and the rooms are furnished we will be able to offer accommodation as soon as possible. Though we are unable to give a firm launch date, it is my fervent hope that by late spring everything will be in readiness so that we can throw open our doors and invite one and all to stay with us. I look forward to seeing you then!

- MATTERS ARISING FROM THE LAST AGM
There were no matters arising.
4. ANNUAL ACCOUNTS TO YEAR END DECEMBER 2020
The Treasurer talked the meeting through the accounts published within the report, adding that there was an inter-year transfer necessary to more accurately reflect the cost of stock.
Peter Colback proposed and Fred Thompson seconded that the annual accounts were accepted. The annual accounts were unanimously accepted by the meeting.
- TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT MAY 2020 TO MAY 2021 This had been circulated prior to the AGM.
Shirley Buxton commented on the challenges that had been faced by the Friends of Julian Trustees since the Coronavirus pandemic. Having to communicate online had encouraged an expansion of events online to reach members across the world. She expressed particular thanks to Peter Colback and Howard Green for their hard work in launching the new website and ensuring that meetings went smoothly online.
Shirley handed over to Fr Richard Stanton who gave the meeting an up-to-the minute update on how work was progressing with the work of the Partnership and refurbishment of All Hallows House, along with photographs of how the renovation is progressing. The Julian of Norwich Partnership was formally launched on St Andrew’s day the 30th November 2020.
It was anticipated that if the refurbishment remains on schedule that the retreat house will be formally opened at the end of October 2021. This will possibly coincide with a live and online retreat planned at the end of that month. A job description for the appointment of a House Steward will be formally agreed at the next Trustees meeting in July. Fr Richard asked those present to let him know if they’re aware of any lay or ordained person who may be suitable for the position. Funding for the structural work and refurbishment of All Hallows had been generously given by the Community of All Hallows and the Friends of Julian Vision fund. The Partnership Trustees were to meet later in June and Fr Richard encouraged those present to pray
8
for the outreach of the Julian Campus and to speak positively of the changes in order to foster good relationships with the church and the worldwide community.
Appreciation was shared during the meeting for the Lent course organised with Norwich cathedral and the lecture given by Professor Vincent Gillespie.
6. ELECTION OF NEW TRUSTEES TO FRIENDS OF JULIAN
Gill Dascombe had decided to stand down and was not seeking re-election. Sally Anne Lomas and Fred Thompson CJN had completed their term of office, although they were happy to be re-elected.
Felicity Maton, who had been co-opted was willing to be elected as a new trustee. Margaret Mary McFadyen was unanimously proposed as a new trustee.
All four were unanimously approved by the meeting. The next meeting of Trustees on 27th July 2021 will elect new officers.

TREASURER’S REPORT
by Jenni Hancock
At the end of another unusual year, I am pleased to report that, despite the Friends of Julian of Norwich accounts showing a deficit, the overall position is positive.
Although total voluntary income fell, we are encouraged by the increase in regular support from Friends and Companions. Online sales have been steadily building but it will take time to match our previous in-person sales. As such, we continue to rely on the generosity of our supporters.
(continued overleaf)
9
(Treasurer’s Report, continued)
The increase in expenditure, resulting in a deficit, is partly due to depreciation of equipment and partly because of broadening our online outreach. As part of this investment, we employed Anne, our Social Media Lead, to engage with the wider Julian community online.
Our general cash reserves remain healthy at approximately £30,000. Trustees are considering how to best use some of our reserves while being conscious of the need to protect against future deficit.
The trustees were delighted to make a sizable contribution to the Julian Partnership towards the refurbishment of All Hallows House. The donation came from the designated Vision Fund and is part of our larger financial commitment to the Julian campus and Partnership.

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS & COMPANIONS OF JULIAN IN AUSTRALIA
FROM BARBARA LUMLEY, FACILITATOR
Greetings from Australia and as I write this, I wish to honour the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney on whose land I live.
Our First Nations people have always understood the revelation shown to Julian that all of creation is sacred.
We are now in our second year, meeting together each first Monday of the month and I am delighted to say that we have Friends who
have joined us from most states of Australia as well as a Friend from New Zealand.
During the Julian Festival in May, two of our members will be accepted as Companions. They are Joan Small and me. Julian has been our Companion since the eighties.
It is a gift to have this community of Friends to explore and learn together more of Julian and her revelations of Divine Love.
THE DIFFERENCE THE FRIENDS MAKE...
The annual financial contribution from each Friend enables Julian’s insights into God and his endless love to be made more widely available. Lectures, retreats, books and tweets are but a few ways we engage with people. Being an active part of the Julian Partnership is an exciting step with many new opportunities ahead. Is your subscription due at this time of year? Many Friends have thoughtfully set up a regular yearly payment, which helps us for the future. email: treasurer@julianofnorwich.org
A SPECIAL MESSAGE If you’ve received this newsletter by post and you would be happy to receive an email copy in future, please send your email address to us at contact@julianofnorwich.org. This would make our communication with you so much easier, and save valuable funds. Thank you.

THE JULIAN WEBSITE
FROM PETER COLBACK
“Mighty enough to love me”
This sentence above seems to be a beautiful place to have ended up a number of times over the last few years as a Trustee. It has been a gift for me to be able to help the Friends of Julian (FOJ) start using technology smarter and to work with many Trustees getting the new website up.
The plan has always been to develop a connectedness that is real and meaningful for each Friend and Companion; the ease that news and articles can now be added to the website and the way the team meetings now work to achieve this with Trustees in various countries has been such a great step forward.
I have had the joy of working with Howard, Shirley and many since 2016 and my leaving as a Trustee is not because I don’t want to help anymore, but I think the projects completed and now in place give a space for another as Trustee … this is merely a changing of the tide like enjoying the same view over the same beautiful beach … in my head I have the Friends of Julian as the beach at Lindisfarne with the causeway continually daily covering and uncovering and the timelessness of the view is the all and wonderfully real in itself, rather than being dependent on the one who is looking at it. That is how I see FOJ and I am just really thankful that for these years I have enjoyed such beautiful views and had such deep friendships grow that were so welcome and unplanned and ongoing, equally now, timeless.
Still here only as you need me – so lovely to have new Trustees on board for this next ebb and flow of the tide.

COMPANIONS’ REPORT
FROM Fr. BRUCE BATSTONE, CJN ObOJN
As a Companion of Julian of Norwich, I try to immerse myself in the Revelations of Divine Love as much as I can.
Since moving for part of the week to Norwich, it is a real treat to attend the Friday 5pm Mass regularly in St Julian’s Church, when a short excerpt from the Revelations is read. This is a time of worship, close to Julian’s Cell, where her legacy is especially resonant, and a time when those who wish to companion her in a life of prayer, intercession and service are especially remembered. Companions are prayed for by name at this Mass, and any intentions sent in via the Friends of Julian website, or that of the St John’s Timberhill, with St Julian’s website, will also be included
in the prayers on a Friday evening. One of the Marks of a Companion is to grow in intercessory prayer, and it is a lovely thought and remembrance that Companions of Julian all over the world are praying together at 5pm GMT on a Friday. We are blessed with five aspirant Companions, most of whom will be received this year, and who will join the 36 strong international dispersed communion of Companions of Julian across the world. To find out more about the Companions of Julian, see the Friends of Julian website.

JULIAN650 – THE 650th ANNIVERSARY OF JULIAN’S SHOWINGS FROM TRUSTEE, LESLEY MITCHELL
2023 will be the 650th anniversary of Julian’s Showings , which gifted us her Revelations of Divine Love . As Trustees of the Friends of Julian we have been considering the activities that we’d like to organise, and supporting the Julian of Norwich Partnership in planning events to celebrate this important anniversary year.
We are in the process of finding a high-profile speaker to deliver the 42nd Annual Julian Lecture. We are thinking of hosting an online gathering, to discuss a different book about Julian each month during 2023.
It is our hope that Friends and Companions of Julian, wherever you are in the world, will be inspired to organise your own local celebrations throughout the year. The Friends of Julian would like to offer a programme that provides a wide range of suitable Julian events, large and small. Here are a few ideas to set you thinking: a retreat or a series of half-hour meditations; an evening speaker or a day conference; a musical performance or an art installation; a book, writing or discussion group; a planned visit to the Julian Cell in Norwich; an exhibition or an evening of readings.
More people are discovering Julian’s message and finding it pertinent in these turbulent times. Please let us know of your ideas and plans for what could be a very special Julian650 celebration.
Watch out next year for new books about Julian and republications of special editions.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS
I report on the Accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 December 2021 which are set out on pages one to four.
Respective Responsibilities of Officers and Examiner
The Charity’s Officers are responsible for the preparation of the Accounts. The Charity’s Officers consider that an audit is not required for this year under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the Accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the Accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the Accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Officers concerning any such matters.
The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiner’s Statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
-
to prepare Accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act,
have not been met or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the Accounts to be reached.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the Accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the Accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Officers concerning any such matters.

have not been met or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the Accounts to be reached.
