Liz graduated from the Royal College of Art with a MA in ceramics. She was supported as an exchange student at Konstfack in Stockholm for 3 months, starting January 2022.

Elizabeth works to commission as well as for exhibitions. She welcomes conversations with galleries and organisers and looks to partake in residencies globally.

Her work explores the way in which meaning can emerge through making and the ambiguity of composition. Using colour, glaze, intuitive and considered making she look to create work which evokes thought or feeling in the viewer and might offer a reflection on the human condition and modes of being.

At the centre of my practice I am a gatherer of things: words, abstract objects, everyday objects, colours, gestures, and questions. At Konstfack I will once again use gathering as a starting point for my work in clay, a way into intuitive making, an attempt at translating thoughts, feelings and experience that might not be easily translated through the use of language.

A deep care for nature permeates her processes and methods, and much of the work takes place outdoors. She often works site-specific in proximity to water, which holds an important place in her art through its physical and philosophical properties of spreading and thereby binding together species, bodies and landscapes.

Elin is a materialbased artist living outside Uppsala, Sweden. Her practice is multi-disciplinary and performative using photography, ceramic sculpture, land art and installation, as well as writing. Her work is concerned with the relationship between human and nature, negotiating nonhierarchical ways of relating to the other-than-human. She holds a BFA from HDK, the University College of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg and a MFA from Konstfack, the university of Arts, Craft and Design, Stockholm, and

I am intrigued to see what could be learned from working with a city as a landscape, and it would be quite the challenge to hear the places through the urban noise. I am prepared to be unprepared. Maybe there are some new materials, waiting to be put to work?

AMI-LOUISE JOHNSSON violinist & violist

Ami-Louise is a violinist and viola player is being supported as the Anglo-Swedish Society’s music scholar for the fourth year running. She is currently completing her fourth year at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London with Professor David Takeno.

2nd prize and the Dvorak Society Award at the Oskar Nedbal International Viola Competition in Prague, the Junior award from Hattori Foundation and, in the same year, was named a scholar of the Drake Calleja Trust. As the 2020 winner of the Max and Peggy Morgan Viola Award, she was awarded a solo recital in St James Piccadilly, London. With a passion for chamber music, she often performs at festivals in Scandinavia and internationally. See a recording from Copenhagen Summer Festival (2022). Ami-Louise made her solo debut at the age of 8 in 2009 with the Swedish Radio Philharmonic in Berwaldhallen, Stockholm playing J.S.Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor.

Ami-Louise was born in Stockholm 2001. She began her violin studies at the age of 5 with Nina and Oleg Balabine at Lilla Akademien music institution in Stockholm.

Ami-Louise has been lauded for her insightful musicianship and the warmth of her captivating sound. As a featured artist with LGT Young Soloists, she has performed on many prestigious stages worldwide, such as Tonhalle Zürich and Charlottenborg festival. She regularly broadcasts on Radio and TV, most recently on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ in London and Podium Witteman in Amsterdam. In 2021 she was awarded the

Achievements and Performance

Royal College of Art graduate Liz Jackson was sponsored to spend three months at the ceramics department in Stockholm. Her counterpart, Elin Sundström, spent three months in London.

Viola player Ami-Louise Johnsson was supported in the final year of her Bachelor of Music degree at the

Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The London Nordic Choir received funding to perform in York and Liverpool.

The Tenebrae Choir was supported to tour Copenhagen, Kalmar and Helsingborg.

UCL Scandinavian Studies student Alex Wainwright was selected as the first recipient of the Baroness Maddock Scholarship, which allowed him to spend a year in Gothenburg in Sweden.

Financial Review

The Trustees have forecast the level of free reserves (that is, both funds not tied up in fixed assets and designated and restricted funds) the Charity will require in order to sustain its operations and make appropriate adjustments should there be a material reduction in the Charity’s income. The Trustees consider that the most appropriate level of free reserves is a sum equivalent to twelve months of the Charity’s running costs, which is calculated as total bank and payment charges, secretarial and website domain costs together with printing and stationary for the year 2022: £7,353 (2021: £3,826).

At 31 December 2022 the Society had unrestricted reserves of £84,778 (2021: £89,053). Of this, £25,247 (2021: £26,736) is held in investments to provide income, leaving free reserves of £59,531 (2021: £62,317). In addition, restricted reserves of £29,694 (2021: £32,891) are held, taking total reserves to £114,472 (2021: £121,944).

The year-on-year stable level of reserves provide confidence that the Society will continue to be able to cover operational costs and award scholarships as promised.

Mils Bridgewater (RCA) and Berenice Hernandez (Konstfack) were selected to take part in the 2022-23 exchange.

Professor Neil Kent and Captain Clement Chevalier’s talk about France’e Royal Swedish Regiment marked a return to live events. Other highlights were the annual Valborg Dinner at the Travellers Club, a visit to the College of Arms, a reception hosted by H E the Swedish Ambassador at her Residence, and the annual Punsch Ball at the Cavalry and Guards Club.

Virtual events continued to allow us to attract speakers and audiences from outside the United Kingdom. These included a talk about Tjolöholm Castle in Gothenburg, Åbo Swedish Theatre, Carl Michael Bellman, and the textile artist Märta Måås-Fjetterström.

Responsibilities of the Council

The members of the Council (“The Trustees”) are required to prepare accounts for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs and of the surplus or deficit of the Society for that period. In preparing these accounts the Trustees are required to:

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Society and which enable them both to ascertain its financial position and ensure that the accounts comply with the Charities Act 1993. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Society and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. In particular they are responsible for investing charitable funds wisely to maximise the return in a manner conducive to its charitable needs and demands.

I report to the Trustees on my examination of the accounts of Anglo-Swedish Society (the charity), charity number 289688, for the year ended 31 December 2022, which are set out on pages 24 to 31.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

The charity’s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Act and that an independent examination is needed.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

For the financial year ending 31 December 2022 the Charity was entitled to exemption from audit under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 relating to small charities.

1. Accounting Policies

The principal accounting policies are summarised below. The accounting policies have been applied consistently throughout the year and in the preceding year.

a. Basis of accounting

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Charities Act 2011 and applicable regulations.

Anglo-Swedish Society meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102.

The financial statements are drawn up on the going concern basis which assumes the Charity will continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. The Trustees consider the current and forecast cash resources to be sufficient to cover the working capital requirements of the charity for at least 12 months.

The Trustees are of an opinion that at the time of approval of these financial statements there were no indications suggesting that the charity would not be able to continue as a going concern in the foreseeable future.

b. Fund accounting

The funds held by the charity fall into the following categories:

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objectives of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by a donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

The Trustees consider that the most appropriate level of free reserves is a sum equivalent to twelve months of the Charity’s running costs.

c. Incoming resources

All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when the charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:

Voluntary income is received by way of grants, donations, subscriptions, sponsorship and gifts and is included in full in the Statement of Financial Activities (“SoFA”) when received. Grants, where entitlement is not conditional on the delivery of a specific performance by the charity, are recognised when the charity becomes unconditionally entitled to the grant.

Income from investments is included in the SoFA on the accruals basis. Tax recoverable on such income is recognised in the same accounting year.

Incoming resources from charitable activities are accounted for in the period in which the performance takes place.

Donated services and facilities are included at the value to the charity where this can be quantified. The value of services provided by volunteers has not been included in these accounts.

d. Subscriptions

Subscriptions for individuals are included in the income and expenditure account on the accruals basis.

Corporate subscriptions are included in the accounts on an accruals basis.

e. Resources expended

Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.

Costs of generating funds comprise the costs associated with attracting voluntary income.

Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature necessary to support them.

Governance costs include those costs associated with meeting the constitutional and statutory requirements of the charity and include any independent examination fees and costs linked to the strategic management of the charity.

All costs are allocated between the expenditure categories of the SoFA on a basis designed to reflect the use of the resource.

f. Investments

Investments are stated at market value. Gains or losses on revaluation are included in the SoFA.

(d) Membership

At the end of 2022, there were a total of 255 members (2021: 244). Of these, 2 was a corporate member (2021:3), 56 were family members (2021: 52), 75 were life members (2021: 80), 63 were individual members (2021: 63), 4 were 25-and-under members (2021: 5), 41 were 65-and-over members (2021: 38) and 7 were overseas members (2021: 3), 3 honorary life members, and 3 annual-free members. There were 3 Patrons of the Arts (2021: 3) and 13 Friends of the Arts (2021: 10).

Life membership was closed to new members from 1995, but was re-introduced at the 2018 AGM, at 15 times annual individual membership, which means £600 with a 50% discount for the over-65s, at current levels.

The annual subscription is payable in advance on January 1st each year. Where appropriate, tax is reclaimed under Gift Aid on subscriptions.

Subscriptions are currently as follows:

(i) for persons that are Members, £40 a year (2008: £20) (ii) for Family Membership, £50 a year (2008: £25)

(iii) for Firms or Corporations which are Members, £200 a year (2008: £100)

An overseas subscription rate was introduced at the 2013 AGM:

(iv) for persons that are resident overseas, £20 a year (2013: £40)

A 25-and-under subscription rate was introduced at the 2018 AGM: (iv) for persons that are 25 years or younger, £10 a year (2017: £40)

16 members payed pre-2009 membership fees (2018: 16) and the Society is pursuing members to review their standing orders to ensure they are paying the correct amount.

Persons joining after 1 October need pay one-half of the appropriate subscription for that year.

SWEDEN’S ROYAL FRENCH REGIMENT

22 February 2022

Professor Neil Kent and Captain Clement Chevalier spoke about a Swedish regiment that participated in France’s greatest military campaigns during the reign of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI.

and the regiment was disbanded at the close of the 18th Century.

The talk was the British launch of Professor Neil Kent and Captain Clément Chevalier’s new book, which sheds new light on this influential military unit. The work examines the regiment’s role in diplomatic and military relations between France and Sweden.

Régiment de Royal Suédois played a part during the American War of Independence, fighting alongside Lafayette and General George Washington until the victory at Yorktown. Count Axel von Fersen purchased the position of colonel-proprietor of the regiment in 1783, possibly in order to be able to stay close to the Queen of France Marie Antoinette. He later struggled in vain to save the King and Queen during the French Revolution,

THREE MEN FROM THE NORTH

9 March 2022

Members of the Society were invited to a performance of Three Men from the North, a collaboration between Sweden, Finland and Iceland produced by the Nordic Council.

It was part of Nordic Exposure, a season of performances bringing Nordic culture to London. The Nordic Council was created in 2017 by Merri Heikkilä (Finland), Bjarni Árnason (Iceland) and Jakob Jacobsson (Sweden), whilst the three performers were still studying at Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam.

VALBORG DINNER

22 April 2022

The Swedish Ambassador, HE Mikaela Kumlin, attended the society’s first Valborg dinner since 2019.

The London Nordic Choir led a full house in song at the Travellers Club on Pall Mall as members and guests welcomed spring in the traditional manner. The dinner followed the Annual General Meeting, chaired by our President, Lord Beith PC.

TJOLÖHOLM CASTLE

22 March 2022

Author and photographer Elisabeth Svalin Gunnarsson spoke online about this exceptional country house in the Swedish province of Halland.

It was designed in the English style by Lars Israel Wahlman (1870–1952) for the shipping magnate James Fredrik Dickson (1844-1898). The house was inherited by Dickson’s daughter Blance Bonde in 1906 and became a registered historical building in 1991. Lars von Trier filmed the exterior scenes of Melanchola at the castle.

This event was hosted by our sister society, the SwedishBritish Society in Stockholm.

Cathedral founded in 1300, the seat of the Archbishop of Finland, the Åbo Akademi University, which is the only exclusively Swedish-speaking university outside Sweden and, of course, the magnificent Åbo Swedish Theatre.

A Zoom talk and virtual tour of Åbo Svenska Theater, the Åbo Swedish Theatre, was given by the theatre’s head of Communications, Maria Olin. This outstandingly beautiful theatre is the oldest in Finland, among the oldest theatres in Northern Europe and is still primarily in its original form. The first theatre in Finland was built in Åbo in 1817 and was destroyed in Åbo’s Great Fire of 1827. The current building opened on 21 January 1839, with its earliest productions being mainly touring groups of Swedish Actors. Åbo (or Turku in Finnish) plays an integral part in the history of Swedish-speaking Finland. The City is officially bilingual and is the former capital of Finland. It has a magnificent castle (Turun Linna), a Medieval

CARL MICHAEL BELLMAN

His reputation is very high in the Nordic countries and Germany, but much less so in Anglo-American circles. We were pleased to be joined by the world-famous musician Martin Best.

Bellman quickly became highly popular. He was musically gifted, but when he performed his songs, he also assumed roles as one would in a theatrical performance.

Dr. Jennie Nell, lecturer at Stockholm University and vice-chairman of the Swedish Bellman Society, gave an online talk about Sweden’s most famous songwriter, composer, musician, poet and entertainer.

Sadly, Bellman suffered from financial troubles throughout his life became a severe alcoholic, and many then saw him then (and forever) as merely an alcoholic ‘pub poet’. This was despite the fact that he had a close relationship with the then Swedish king Gustav III.

Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795) is often referred to as Sweden’s national poet. His debut work was Evangeliska Dödstankar (Evangelical Death Thoughts) which was written in 1757 and was followed by a wealth of mainly but not exclusively satirical poems.

John Petrie OBE, Windsor Herald at the College of Arms, hosted a talk and supper at the College of Arms in the City of London.

This is the corporation responsible for the granting of new coats of arms, genealogical research and the recording of pedigrees in England and Wales. The College is also the official body responsible for matters relating to the flying of flags on land, and it maintains the official registers of flags and other national symbols.

Members and guests spent over an hour in the record room looking at medieval and later manuscripts, including successive grants of arms to Admiral Lord Nelson.

AMBASSADOR’S RECEPTION

9 November 2022

Members were invited to a lively reception and concert hosted by H E Mikaela Kumlin Granit at the Swedish Ambassador’s Residence.

A special performance was given by Mae Heydorn, the society’s 2008-10 music scholar. Mae is a contralto and sang a wonderfully varied repertoire ranging from Wagner to Gilbert and Sullivan. She has enjoyed great success since graduating from the Guildhall of Music and Drama. She was the recipient of the Swedish Wagner Society’s Award in 2019 and has performed at Glyndebourne and Cadogan Hall among many others. Mae was accompanied on piano by Ben Woodward, artistic director of Regents Opera.

and Drama. She has been part of many productions including Der Zar lässt sich Photographieren, Die Fledermaus, in Zauberflöte and Angel Esmeralda & Miss Fortune. Aina was accompanied by Thomas Eckhout on piano. Emilia Agajew played the harp. Members then enjoyed dancing the night away.

Members and guests enjoyed a marvellous evening of food, wine, song and dancing in the convivial surroundings of the Cavalry and Guards Club, Piccadilly.

Streamlining the Membership Experience

The Anglo-Swedish Society, known for fostering cultural exchange and strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and Sweden, has traditionally managed its membership offline. However, with the advent of digital technology, the society is now embracing a transformative change to enhance its membership experience.

Embracing digital transformation, the Anglo-Swedish Society has transitioned from offline membership management to an online platform, revolutionizing the membership experience. This shift brings convenience, real-time updates, efficient event management, personalized profiles, and valuable data analytics, enabling the society to better serve its members and strengthen the bonds between the United Kingdom and Sweden.

Structure, Governance and Management

The Anglo-Swedish Society (hereafter referred to as “the Society” or “the Charity”) was formally established on 17 February 1919 and Registered as a Charity in England and Wales on 21 June 1984 under rules adopted on 16 May 1984.

A Board of Trustees, known as the Council, comprising the Officers and up to 12 members, administers the Society. The Officers are: the President, the Chairman, the Vice-Chairman, the Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary. The President is elected by the Society’s members for 3 years and may be re-elected. The Officers and Council Members are elected by the Society’s members and hold office until the next Annual General Meeting at which they may be re-elected. The Trustees receive no emoluments.

The President, although an Officer of the Society, takes no part in the management of the Society.

The Council has appointed an Executive Committee from its members with the Society Chairman as its Chairman and a membership comprising the Officers of the Society and the Chairmen of the Awards and Events Committees.

The Society has the power to make any investment which the Trustees see fit. The Council has considered the most appropriate policy for investing funds and has found that specialised unit trusts, designed for the charity sector, and bank accounts paying high tax free interest, meet their requirements to generate both income and capital growth. The Council is constantly reviewing the performance of its investments.

Objectives and Activities

The objects of the Society, which shall have no political character, are:

(a) the advancement of the education of the public in the science, art, literature, music, history, economics, philosophy, culture and other recognised academic subjects of Great Britain and Sweden;

(b) the support of any other charitable activities.

In furtherance of the above-mentioned objects, but not further or otherwise, the Society shall:
