District Lead Volunteers. Report
As previously, we have included as many indrvidual reports from Groups and Sertions as leaders
have been able to provide and they speak forthemsefves in terms of the range and variety of
artivities leaders across the District have been able to provide.
All leaders would doubtless also want tojoin us in paying tribute to the sm311 army of Trustees and
helpers who also work. often behind the scenes. to support and help make Scouting the fun,
challenging and indeed 'life affirminl activity it Undoubted is. Our thanks and those of Gordano
District Tru5tee5 go out to them all.
District Numbers
Overall numbers in the '24 census.. Youth.. 1219: Adutt 343.. Network 23.. show a slight drop of youth
numberson the previou5 year but having been surprised by this it seems likely that the discrepancv
is likely to the census date becoming more flexible and new BeaveTS joining soon after numbers
were submitted. As most previous reports have noted, the existence of sizeable waiting lists across
the District underlines what we all know.. if we can recruit more leaders we can offer this great
opportunity to many more youngsters.
Transformation
Members of Council might rememberthat last yearfs meeting had a valedirtory note from Steve and
Tony. reaching the end of their official District Commissioner tenures.
However a5 the process of Transformation got under way in Gordano District. CINe Madders from
2PH in particular, has continued to support groups with the ch3nBes required.
Steve has put a lot of time and effort in working to ensure that as a District we have high rates of
compliance wf(h Safeguarding training and in particular Safety training which has rightly become a
very high priority since the sad death of an Explorer Scout on The Great Orme and the resulting
coroners report.lt is fair to say that much has been achieved but delays to new computer systems
means that dates'to go live, from HQ have consistentty been moved back and its not yet completely
clear when indeed we will have been transformed.
Despite the sceptieal note, all groups have made good progTess updating relevant data and
assimilating old roles into new.The prominent word'volunteerf in title5 is a small but significant step
forward and helps allay some confusion that still exists.
We have been successful in recrurtinE a Distrirt Lead Volunteer team to the of the four strands of
responsibilrty and ovrthank5 to them agreeing to work as part of this new team. Our District Lead

Steve and Tony will continue to support with reduced commitments particularfy in the areas of
compliance, training and awards. An immediate need is to increase those sufficiently experienced
colleagues who might be accredited for issuing eg Nights away permits.
Ten Tors 2024 - r(s 61st year
Always a highlight of the older Scouts, calendar. Once again we combined with Axe District to give
over a hundred youngsters the chance to take part in this event. Many thanks to the many leaders
who prepare the scouts each year.
World Scout Jamboree 2023
This time last year we enjoyed meetingthe fouryoungstersfrom Gordano already to jet off. We are
all aware of the difficUleS that followed but it was heartening to find from one of the Avon
Contingent leaders that our youngsters conducted theMSee$ with resilence and goo humour.
Glennywood
The'jewel in The Crown,. See Phil's report foran update on all the things that have been undertaken
by the volunteer team, resuking in significantty increased visits.
Explorers
Thls has been a year of rather mixed fortunes for Gordano Explorers. Our thanks to George
Wormald-Kellywho had to stepdown from leading Salthouse Explrers at Easter. Many thanks to him
for the time and effort put in over the years We have not been successful in recruiting a new leader
yet but. Manyof the Salthouse youngsters have been able to join in actwities at Kilkenny resulting in
bumper numbers which hasn't affected the great programme the leaders are running.
Melons ESU will also soon be looking for a new leaders as Robin Macintosh rationalises hi5 5COUt
commitment5 and discussions are underway with the other Nailsea Unit, Horizon, to give the
youngsters a chance to carry on with Explorers. Backwell's unit, Barracudas also has very healthy
numbers and a strong programme.
As a District Unrts, our thank5 go to the many Explorer Leaders.
And Last
It was sad to hear of the death of Vickie Farrall for many years a leader at Long Ashton and Distritt
Secretary. She would have been delighted to attend this yearfs Long Ashton AG M held at the site of
the new HQ last month. A lovely occasion.
All good wishes to the new District Te3m who will be in contact with their plans for strengthening
and supporting our leaders.

Glenny Annual Review 2023
We have had yet another busy and productNe yearwith Glenny Wood being as popular as ever.
Site Usage - The total usage at Glenny Wood for 2023 is 2C13visits/camps wfch 5737 people on site.
Of these, IEA)were visits, mainly in the evening, wrth 4455 people attending, young and older plus
49 camps were held at Glenny Wood wf(h 1282 people on site.
So, year on year overall
The increase in site usage is signrficant wtth 34 more visrts and 711 extra people on site.
This shows 30 more secrional visits mainly during the evenings with 842 people increase
over 2022.
Camps were up by4akhou8h actual numbersdown by 131.
Gordano District Site usage- The site remains very popular with evening visits from Gordano Distrirt
members with 123 Visits and 3630 District members on site plus 15 camps with 410 attending.
Withln Gordano the usage is large and increasing year on year-
There is a significant increase in visr(s with an additional 18 occasions and 672 extra visitors.
Camps were up by Iwf(h 40M0 Mper$ yearon year.
Safety- So with the level of usage, we need to maintain a significant focus on safety to reduce risk,
not negate, where we can.
Woodlands- To manage the site and keep r( safe is a challenge, especially in such a woodland
environment. We have again employed an Arboriculture specialist to undertake the annual tree
inspection. Following a review of the recommendation5, planning permission was then obtained,
and the work completed. Most of this felling works is due to Ash Dieback.
Annual Safety Checks- We have several annual checks undertaken by professional people in
addition to the Trees. these include Water testing for Bacteria and Legionella. all neEatwe. Fire
Extinguishers, Trattors servicing an(1 check5, Site heating boiler as well as electrical PAT testing.
Weekly safety checks- We have a programme of our own si(e checks which cover the whole site,
including Woodlands, Lodge. Loos. Activities and equipment. Any issues identrfied are quick
re501ved.
The electric5 have been checked and improved, with Some rewiring, switching to LED lighting and
significant improvement to the lights outdoors for the paths and around the buildings.
Srte Improvement- As in previous years many hundreds of maintenance tasks have been
undertaken during 2023. In addition. we look to improve our site. This year this has include,
NewArtivities- Radioactive Logs. Sheep Penning. Darts and Table Tennis have been added.
Wetlands area has been revamped wf(h greater aCsS on paths to the pond for pond
dipping and our first bug hotel is in srtu.
The Wetlands Bridge has been blIt.
The Karts track has been signrficantly changed antl easierto use. Thanks to 2nd Portishead
scouts for their help with this.
We have also started on a major project to create a round Glenny Boundary trail, which will
include interactive boards. First part is due to be opened in ju 2024.

2nd Portishead Scout Group
A sucSsful yearwf(h 6full sections, 2 at each age group, and a long waiting list once again showing
that Stouting remains popular.
We had lots of chief scout awards achieved in 2023 7 Bronze, 17 silver and 4 Gold with
loads more due in 2024.
We had much success recruiting new volunteers in 2023 to keep the 2 beaver sections open.
Some leaders are moving up with tharown children to cubs and scouts this year so ongoing
recruitment is now the norm as new children start.
We continue our search for a new Chair of our Trustee Board as have had no interest to date.
On a Group level one of our Trustees took on the challenge and successfully applied for
grants totalling £32,000 for a new minibus as the old one was beyond repair. We have lots of
bookings from other scout groups as well as the wider Portishead community.
Our hall is also now available for hire at a very reasonable £10 per hour. (Shameless plug)
and we are looking to install sound attenuation similar to ist Nailsea to reduce sound levels
in the main hall. We already have £1500 Grant towards this.

2nd Portishead Scout Group
2nd Clevedon- GLV'S Report
2023-24 has been a year of consolidation for 2nd Clevedon. The Group now benefits from a full
leadershipteam for all three sectionsas well as a full board of tnjstees. Having thriving leadership is
helping us to Slow duce our waiting lists for all three sections.
Land Yeo Beaver Colony ha5 been able to offer an imaginative and challenging programme of
outdoor and indoor artThif(ies as well as visits to Coast Guard, RNU and emergency seNices.
Lion Cub Pack continues togrow with 26 members who have enjoyed a programme of outdoor skills
and activities at Glenny Wood as well as visits to Laser Tag and many other activities. The leadership
team have been able to provide a varied programme, and are working towards gaining nights aw3v
permits to take the pack camping.
Aztec Scout Troop is beginning to grow again, although the age profile of the Troop 15 Still quite
young because of the after effects of the pandemic. As well as a busy and adventurous programme
includin8 kayakin8. night hikes, geocaching and beach barbeques, the Troop enjoyed a weekend
camp at Glennywood. Aftermissing a summer tamp last yearthe Troop will be tamping this year at
Buddens in Dorset. Congratulations go to our four Scouts who all successfully completed the Ten
Tors 35 mile challenge this Mav.
We were sorry to lose our very successful Sakhouse ESU this year due to leaders having to leave
because of work and famity commitments, but we hope that we can recruit a new Explorer lead
volunteer and team to fulFil this important provision in Clevedon
We welcomed Lizzie WoTmald-Kelly as our new Chair to the Board of Trustees this year and thank
them for theircontinuing 5UPPOrt, fundraisingand commttmentto the Group as we get to grips with
the changes that transformation bring.
After 15 year5 as GSL at 2CS. I will be standing down On we have appointed a new GSL. I will be
joining the Gordano District LeadershipTeam to help grow and promote Scouting acr055 the District.
It has been a privilege and honourto lead the Group over the past IS years, something I could not
have achieved without an exceptionaland commtttedteamof volunteers. 5UPPOrters and, of course,
young people.

1st Nailsea ReF)0rt 2024
The Beavers, Cubs and kouts have been able to enjoy a full programme of events during
the year, and have come together for a group carol service (complete with the growing
Scout and guide Bandl and an expanded Remembrance Parade in November
As usual in July. we were delighted that Nailsea Carnival was again a great 5ucce5s, bringing
a sense of community and putting smiles on lots of faces, whilst also providing a helpful
opportunity to raise funds for the Group.
In addition to organising Nai15ea Carnival. our excellent team of fundraising volunteer5,
Friends of 1st Nailsea, have also continued to run several clothing collections
via Bogs2School to bring in much-needed funds. As ever, the Trustees are immensely
grateful for their support, as well as to all of the people who made donation5.
We were also very pleased to support the Santa float around Nailsea this Year which is
always a highlight the festive season, and have had a stall at several monthly Nailsea
Farmers markets to show presence in the community and work on recruitment
Sections
Beovers
The two 8eaver colonies continued to run at full capacity all year, with a varied and exciting
programme. This year Beavers have been learning about potatoes. fair trade, endangered
animals and Poland to name but a few topics. They have been tobogganing, pond dipping
and have a visit from some exotic creatures including snakes and bearded dragonsl Four of
our long serving beaver leaders are looking to finish in the Summer of 2024 50 we have been
recruiting and training 4 new leaders to take over the reigns in late 2024
Sleepovers were held twice during the year to start the beavers getting used to staying away
from home ready for future camps when they move to cubs. The halloween one was
particularly muddy and included a walk through a field with some inquisitive cows
As we aim to do every year all those who moved up to Cubs during the year also achieved
their Chief 5couV5 Bronze Award.
Cubs
Our three Cub packs continue to run a little under full capacity as we still only have 2 Beaver
Colonies but a few new direct entries have helped keep nUmIr$ a little higher.
The Cubs have been very busy again c(M)king, gardening , learning circus skills.
learning about the parts of the human body. trying new foods, making bath bombs,
perfected theri first aid skills and camp skills
They have visited an escape room (followed by setting up their own version at the scout HQ)
gone to the Weston Pantomime, tried canoeing and climbing. gone bowling and had fun at
our local campsite Glennywood doing backwards cooking and fire lighting
Concorde and Compass Cubs went on their annual camp at Huish Camp Site, with a vi51t to
the Fleet Air arm museum as part of the camp. Jack Warry held a camp at Butchers Coppice
near Poole which included a day trip to Brownsea Island Ithe home of the 1st scout camp 11
Unfortunately Baggy is retiring in September so we are also busy recruiting and training new
Cub leaders of rconcorde adn Compass Packs. She will be greatly missed and big shoes to fill
Most Cubs again managed to achieve their Chief Scout 5 Silver Award and Gordano
Chollenge awards.
Scouts
Our Scout Troops have been running full to capacity during the year which is great and
continue to run a full and varied programme. The Scouts have been making good use of our
new Climbing wall, learning new practical skills in car and bike maintenance and cooking.
Visits include to a Bristol Mosque, Laserquest and the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Finally
mountain biking and Caving are a couple of new skills they have tried out over the year.
oth Troops ran successful camps in the summer, with Raptor Troop camping In Devon
(although they had very challenging weather conditions leading to a last minute move from
tents into a local farmers barn due to high winds!) and Tomahawk Troop travelling to
8iblins Camp Site on the river Wye again with 2nd Nailsea kouts for a joint camp
Both troops managed to get several older scouts through their Chief Scout's Gold
Aword last year culminating in their expedition la two-day hike. with a night under canvas
without a leader presentl.
Bond
The Scout and Guide band 15 going from strength to strength this year with several new
members and the occasional bolster from some slightly rusty musical leaders. Performances
included the carnival in June and the Christmas Carol Service. All the practice paid off in
November when the first marching performance took place leading the remembrance
parade. Many compliments were heard and it is great to have a marchinE band again. Their
most recent event was supporting the D DAY 80 yrs celebration in Long Ashton with laying
of the Drum5 ceremony

Long Ashton Report 2024
Overall, the Long Ashton Group Successful rèn and maintained 6 Stouting sertions within the
Group.. 2 Beaver Colonies, 2 Cub Packs, 2 Scout Troops, during which we..
SuccessfLJlly took on new Scout members, progressed existing members through ScoLJting, and
released older Scouts into further 5coutin& all the while adhering to the value5 of Scouting
throughout.
Enjoyed mixtures of indoorand outdoor activtties atr05s all Settions, as well as commun(ty support
work and growth of individual skill and knowledge in age appropriate ways. including coast steeringi
scuba diving, camps, cooking and lots of pioneering
- Trained new leaders and encouraged the continual development of existing leaders
Supported the local community with outreach actNlties for the good of the village, with significant
input and visibility for local event support and community cleanup adivities.
For numbers we have approximately 130 members, and a waiting list of 110. The
challenge to our waiting list 15 getting sufficient volunteers to help us with rat105 and
growth of Sections
As a Group we are progres5in8 our new HQ planning well. We own the land, have
erected borders and land entrances, installed eleetTiCity and water to the site. We are
awaiting final planning permissions and council road safety works before initiating
build. As part of this, installing green waste water processing and selecting a project
manager are the next actNities, along wtth establishing future revenue lines to
undertake the buikl.
We are experiencin8 a downturn in the number of leaders and operational volunteers
and are havlng difficulty establishing a leader refresh pipeline at the moment. Some of
this appears to be, anecdotally. that the increased focus on compliance is starting to
turn away some potential helpers.

Overall Scout Group operation:
Overall operation of the Scout Group has been maintained despite continued difficulty retaining and
retruiting new adult volunteers. However, between September 2023 and january 2024 all the
sertions were able to provide a full programme of Scouting activities. Appeals for additional
volunteers continue to be made with a few supporters coming forward but On willing to offer
occaslonal helpertype assistance. Core membersforthe Trustee 8oard roles of Chair and Treasurer
have been secured.
Scout Troop.. Scout Troop has operated until January 2024 with Kathryn Kinson las Lead Volunteer).
Kathryn was supported by Greg Derrick Isettion Assi5tantl. Kathryn stepped down from the Lead
role and no sustained Lead has yet steppedforw3rd. Aftera period whenTroop meetings neededto
be suspended the Scout Troop is currentty operating with extra oversight from our Cub Lead.
Cub Pack.. Cub Pack has operated throughout the yearwrth Helen Grice-Roberts as Cub Lead
Volunteer. Helen has been supported by two Becky Cullinane and Richard Perrett. wr(h Richard
gradually taking over the Lead Volunteer role under guidance from Helen.
Beaver Colony.. Beaver Colony has operated throughout the year with Steph Grey as Beaver Lead
Volunteer. Steph h35 been ablysupported by Mattsaunders during this period. Ouring this year we
have been able to steadily expand the membership numbers to a full capacity Colonv.
Financial Report and Accounts (Charity Registration Number 10188361..
Funds at end of the 2023 accounting period stood at £38.610.70. Noting that this figu includes,
£10,076.86 which was transferred from the closure of a Scout Association Savings Account. It also
include5 an erroneou5 donation of £5,(LIj. from Bristol Airport a funding grant that they intended
to make to Cleeve Tennis Club. Otherthan these unusual figures the overall funding position
remaining relatively stable through the year with approx. £12,¢XK).CK) expenditure and income
transattions.

2 Nailsea Report
So it's our 50th Anniversary year for 2nd Nailsea Scouts.
In those 50 years the group has grown and developed with the times. Providingthe community with
valuable youth opportunities. adventures and lrfe skills.
We will be celebrating with a fun day later in the year. And a leaders and ex members meal.
Numbers and facts
At the start of 2023 our census numbers were 157YP attending across 811 our 7 Sertion5 (including
our partner Explorer unit MELONSI-
Thi5 has dropped slightly and our Current membership numbers are at 137 YP when recorded for
the February Censu$ 2024.
In 2023
357 badges were awarded to Beavers
387 bad8es were awarded in 2023 to Cubs
413 badges were awarded in 2023 to Scouts
From the above numbers there were 14 Chief Scout Bronze awards for Beavers
10 Chief Scout Sifver award5 for Cubs and 13 Chief Scout Gold awards for Scouts.
These are the highest awards for each of the Sertions
Overall 1157 badgeslawards were awarded in 2023 to our Beavers/Cubs and Scouts.
Badges awarded to date this year120241 are 474. Sorry no breakdown on these.
Trips and activities last year included- Nights Aw3y opportunities for all Settions at Glenny Wood-
Numerovs local trips or Hikes, lots of 5COUting skills, sailin8, paddle boarding and much more
besides. The number of badges awarded during 2023 speak for themselves.
Scouts a150 shared a Summer Camp 2023: 8ibin5 With 1st Naibea
The Explorers had a Hammock and Bushcraft camp
Cubs had a Camp 2023 at Glenny huge success and lot of fun.
There will be a 50TH Anniversary Cub camp this year 15 at PGL with 31 attending.
Scouts Gold Expedition Dartmoorevent last October WTth another this coming September. Thi5 15 an
opportunity for the older scouts to see rfthey want to take part in the TEN TORS event.
We have had a strong and successful Ten Tors Training team for a very long time
With another full team finishing thisjust last month
There will be no big camps this year as we are low on adult resources across all sections.
Leading to RECRUITMENT
Our weak point at the moment is recruiting and appointing new Team members within the Adult
LeaderTeam5. without adu5 stepping fonvard to support the Group and tojoin the Leadership
Teams, this will have a knock-on effect across the Section5 and the actwities we are able to offer.
WE ALL work alongside an amazin8Team of Volunteers, who Bive up theirtime to ensure we offer
the best possible experiences in Scouting. PERSONALY SOME OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS AND EVEN
MYWIFE HAVE COME FROM MY35 YEARS INVOLVED IN ADULTSCOUTING l Also I have
experienced adventures and actNitie5 that I would have never had the opportunity to do without
scouting
We will however, continue to struggle unless more adults step forward to help.
With the Scout Association Transformation work that 15 CUentty taking place it will make
volunteering easier, and we hope more advlrs will join us.

not as many off-sf(e artivities, programme plans not being sent
out in a timely way and delays in 8ettin8 badges ordered.
Sections meetings getting changed or cancelled at short notice
To bring the Leadership Teams up to full numbers a minimum of 10 more Volunteers are
needed. Could you be one of these? Please speak with your Leaders or let me know how you can
help.

The trustees for providing SUPPOrt and govemance to the group, our financial security and also
guiding the group forwards.

standard. We are very lucky to have such a brilliant btjilding and grounds.
Thank you to the Mayfair Committee and Christmas post team ITonil for the valuable fundraising.
Our brilliant group and team made us stand out to the Pride of Bristol ex minesweeper that used to
be based in the docks, they donated a few thousand pound5 to us when they closed their charity.
And I need to thank ANN, for supporting all the leaders and especialty me on myjourney with 2nd
Nailsea Scouts

Ann has been involved at 2nd Nailsea for 27years. From starting as parent and becoming a leader
then on to GSLfor more than 20year5
Ann has decided step down from her Role and hand overto someone else.
ANN has enjoyed all of hertime overthose years and worked alongside some trufy lovely people
who have taught her lots of skills as she has to others.
This group and the sections would not be how it is today without the time and dedication given by

Horizon Explorers Report (Heather Clark. Unit Leader)
Hori20n Explorers are based at I, Nailsea
We Current have 19 on our books and expect more to come up from scouts in September. We take
scouts from Nailsea, Yatton and Long Ashton. We have successfulty competed in the Ten Tors
Challenge with 3 competing 55miles and I the 45 mile challenge.
We also entered the Rickard Shield Challenge, managing to win the trophy whKh was amazing given
the wet night.
We also entered the Monopoty Run in London forthe first time and are certainly going to compete
again. It was great fun.
We have a varied programe with 3 leaders, mysew, Alex and Eleanor. soon to be joined by Mike
Daynes in September
When the schools break up we are camping on Exmoor at Hornerwood for 3nights and have è
packed programme arranged in association with The National Trust.
Barracuda Ex lorers
It's been anothergood year for Barracudas wrth numbers continuing to grow and we
now have 46 3ctThie members wfch projections to go over gj after the summer.
Our highlight of the year was taking over 20 EXplorS to Europe last summer. visiting
Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague and Bratislava. A great time was had by all and with neèrlv
2,(m rail miles completed we have "trained" (pun intended O i ouryouth in the joys
of interrailing. Plans are currently in hand to follow this up with walking the Camino
Ingles this summer, a 65-mile pilgrimage from Reading to Southampton. Other camps
and events have included a winter camp in the Brecon Beacon5 and the London
monopo Run.
Our Ten Tors representation and results once again did us proud with 27 Explorers
completingtheir respertive challenges. Thanksto all those that helped wrth supportand
training.
