ChairmAn's Re
ort
for the Year Ended 31 December 2020
To use one of the governinents favourile words of 2020, the past year has been unprecedented. At the start of the year.
wlio knew that tlie c.ovid 19 pandeinic W£)b bwoing to cause such inayhem.
W¢ saw th¢ last of our school visitors on March 19th and had no visitors- schools or adiilts- for th¢ r¢st of th¢ ycar. W¢
had hoped for our tea room to generate some income during the summer months but this was not to be so.
The niajoiity of the weie ￿[lOu￿ThEd at the bebFillninbF of the lockdowi. and at tlie tinie of WTitin¥, tliey are still
rloughed. J must thank the govtrnmet]t because, without this schejne, tlie n￿lority of our staff would have been made
redundant. That said, we had to reluctanily make twllo members of statTredundant.
Three membets ot stafyhave been working throu¥hout: ChTiS Tubby oui gaideiier, Zenda Madge the fInance officer and
Simon Partridgc thc dircctor. I must thank thc8c stsff for kccping How Hill 'ticking along, during thc dark day% of the
pandemic. They have also been using the oppoffunitv to carry out much needed redecoration ￿llork within the house.
On a positii'e nute. we have been able to replace all the flat roufing on the IIou5e. The Lontractors inade a fantastic job
and the house is noiv fiLlly iveather proof for the first time in many years. This roofing %hould be %ound for many
deLades to come.
We h(Ive, SULial distanLing pem]itting, had our becret ¥aidens and the house gardens vpen all year and local people have
been delI￿ted to have continued acce*s to these. Indeed, the donation income from the garden% has increa%ed by nearly
IOOO/o on last year.
Ont of our Trustees, Peter HoTsefield . resigned during the year and I would like to pay tribute to his interesting and
thought provoking inpllt to the T￿st over the years.
The Trustees as a group managed to have two socially distanced meetings during the year wthen we discussed the
implications ol. Covid on the Trust. Whilst residei)tial ei)N'ironmei)tal educatioi) is a piimary role for us ai)d we will as
soot] a% we are able focus on thi% w¢ art al%1) loaking to maximi8¢ School day visits both in the short and long t¢rm. W¢
have to acknowledge that the new nomial will almost certainly not be the old nomial and we are investigating ways of
adaptin¥ our oflei tor tlie luture. Me<inwliile Trustees conliTmed theiT deteTmindtion to continue the woik ot'the Tiust in
accordance with the ChaTltable PuTP05es a5 set out in the Trust Deed and continue to Tnaintain a positive profile of the
Trust in the eyes of the public.
We can only look forwaid to a better future.
