The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with section 133 of the Charities Act 2011. ## **Objects of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society** Registered Charity No. 289090 The constitution of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society was adopted on 2 July 1983 and amended on 13 July 1996, 15 July 2000 and 4 July 2020. The charitable objectives of the Society are to undertake and promote the study, recording and preservation of information and illustrative and other material relating to tiles and architectural ceramics for the advancement of public education. In carrying out these activities the Society has careful regard for the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission. Responsibility for the day-to-day finances of the Society is delegated to the Treasurer and Officers. The bankers to the Society are Lloyds Bank plc. ## **Summary of Main Activities undertaken for Public Benefit** The charitable objectives of the Society are to undertake and promote the study, recording and preservation of information and illustrative and other material relating to tiles and architectural ceramics for the advancement of public education. The Society publishes material in printed paper and website media on the history and conservation of tiles and architectural ceramics. Advice is given on the possible listing of buildings of historical significance. Advice in relation to the conservation of tiles and architectural ceramics is given on our website and also this year by the launch of our ‘Terracotta Conference’, aimed at architects, professional conservators and others interested in the field. Visits to sites of interest are made each year. 2 ## **Main Achievements of Charity during the Year** The Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society (TACS) published two copies of the magazine Glazed Expressions, and one copy of the peer-reviewed TACS Journal in the year, distributed to members. Conservation activities included the listing of the Mayer Martin mosaic at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Oldham, following submissions by ourselves and others. Also advice on restoration of Bridlington Station’s tile map; support for the retention of the tiled shop front at 47 Fisherton Street, Salisbury; and advice on the impressive tiled interior of the Nat West bank in Darwen – this seemed destined for removal, following input from the Society and others, the owner and developer of the building has decided to keep the tiles intact. A series of events of educational interest were held, including visits to Norton Priory (medieval tiles); Carlton Towers (Arts & Crafts tiles); Alton in Staffordshire (tiles in situ and tile making); weekend trip to Dorset (tiles in situ and tile making). The Terracotta Conference, a series of lectures on the conservation and use of terracotta and architectural ceramics, was completed, and because of the Covid pandemic, was delivered on line rather than in Manchester. With the help of a grant from Historic England, this is available at no charge on the TACS website. The TACS website continues to offer advice on a wide range of educational and conservation material relating to our charitable aims, including free on line access to the TACS Gazetteer of publicly accessible tiles and architectural ceramics across the UK. We received a one-off donation of £9869 from the Medieval Tile Census, and these funds are restricted for activities (eg publishing an conservation) relating to medieval tiles for five years, after which any residue will revert to TACS unrestricted funds. ## **Risk review** The committee continue to review the major risks to which the Society is exposed in order to ensure that satisfactory systems and procedures are in place to monitor and control these risks. ## **Investment powers and Reserves policy** The constitution does not limit the investment powers of the Society and reserves are maintained to fund the ongoing activities of the Society. At 31 March 2022 the free unrestricted reserves amounted to £35,585.15 (2021: £34,443.82). ## **Volunteers and fund-raising activities** The contribution of volunteers cannot be properly quantified in these accounts and the committee is very grateful to the members of the Society who volunteer for the many unpaid tasks involved in the activities of the Society. The Society organises a programme of events and other fund-raising activities, as proposed and approved by the Annual General Meeting. The majority of recurring income arises from members subscriptions. ## **Review of the transactions and financial position** 3 Restricted income during the year amounted to £9,868.81 in respect of the Medieval Tile Census. The net increase in unrestricted General Funds for the year amounted to £1,141.33 (2021: £3,979.06). Receipts for the year were £26,142.95 (2021 £16,835.78) and expenditure amounted to £15,132.81 (2021 £12,856.72). Volume 27 of the Journal and two issues of Glazed Expressions (87 & 88) were published during the year. Committee members are entitled to claim travel and other expenses for committee meetings. No such expenses were claimed during the year (2021: £17.12 paid to 1 committee member). In preparing those financial statements, the committee members are required to: - select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; - make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; - prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Society will continue in operation. The Treasurer is responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the society. The committee members are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the society and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. ## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE TILES AND ARCHITECTURAL CERAMICS SOCIETY** I report to the members on my examination of the accounts of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society (the Society) for the year ended 31 March 2022. ## **Responsibilities and basis of report** As the charity trustees, the committee members of the Society are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the Society’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner’s statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Society as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records. I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
