CHAIR’S REPORT

3rd Newhaven Scout group have continued to provide an engaging and fun filled program of activities for our young people throughout the year. I offer my personal thanks to each of the fantastic group leaders for their clear direction and to the volunteer supporters without whom we could not deliver the wonderful scouting experience. We will miss the dedication and clear vision of our beloved Cub Scout Leader Melissa and will continue to mourn for her. I acknowledge the increased efforts of the group leaders in stepping up to the challenges that the group have faced since that tragic event.

The executive committee continues to meet regularly to ensure scouting activities are delivered by a robust group of volunteers and I am delighted to preside at this meeting following the financial report for the year. We are in a healthy position post covid and offer thanks to Lewes District Council for their grant in support of our activities.

When I was invited to become the Chair of 3rd Newhaven Scout Group, I expressed a condition that I would not become involved in the day-to-day scouting activities but would observe and comment from a distance. Whilst this has worked reasonably well up to now, I am conscious of the need for a more engaged Chair at this juncture. We will plan to discuss the roles of Group Scout Leader and Chair at the forthcoming executive committee meeting with a focus on ensuring sustainable leadership and direction for the whole group.

In closing I can offer assurance that 3rd Newhaven Scout Group will continue to provide an excellent scouting experience for the young people of Newhaven for the forthcoming year and for many years to come.

Paul Homewood Chair

GROUP SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT

Firstly I'd like to say a big thank you to the Leaders, Assistant Leaders and helpers for all their hard work and dedication which makes my job as GSL easier. We could always do with a bit of extra help so if you have any time to spare it would be much appreciated. Also to the Executive committee for everything they do behind the scenes keeping the group running smoothly.

Financially the group is in a good position which means we can look forward to lots of fun and exciting things to do in the future.

As you are probably aware we recently suffered a huge loss. Not only was Melissa our District Commissioner, Cub Leader, Assistant Scout Leader, and my Training Officer, but most of all she was a good friend. I know that she will be hugely missed by the whole group. She would want the group to thrive and I know that the Leader Team have great plans for the future and are determined to make her proud. With the strength of the 3rd Newhaven Scout family I'm in no doubt we will do this.

Here's looking forward to a great and busy year of scouting.

BEAVER SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT

Every year we like to step up our game when it comes to programme planning. Last year we wanted to get the Beavers away from the hut as much as possible. The best way to learn a new skill is to get out there and practice doing it. We headed off into town each week building up our local knowledge and awareness. A nice selection of our activities included wild walks, church, food banks and fire station visits. Safety walks around town, the beach and then a navigation day at a local park. Throw in some litter picking to finish up our terms badge work and we have all been very busy indeed.

We kicked off this term with a county activity day and camp at Bushy wood. Over 200 Beavers from across the county came together to have fun and for most, get their first nights away badge. This event was a great success and everyone is buzzing for the next one.

What to expect over the next year. Our leader team is chomping at the bit to learn new skills ourselves. These new skills and training will give us a wider range of activities we can do in each section. We are also looking at connecting with local Beaver groups for wild wood walks and picnics. Chuck in some zombie walks, pet shop visits and swimming and you can see that 2023 is already shaping up nicely.

We are very popular at 3[rd] Newhaven and have a very long waiting list. All three of our sections from Beavers to Scouts work very well together at getting the best from our kids.

This year we are hoping to encourage more parents to help all of our sections. The more helpers the more outdoor activities we can do.

As the Beaver leader I am very honoured to have an amazing leader team. Everybody from parent helpers to the Beavers themselves have an active role in what we get up to each term. We run everything by the kids to gage their reactions and listen to their ideas.

Heading into 2023 we hope to embark on adventures we haven't done yet.

CUB SCOUTS LEADERS’ REPORT

This year we have seen a full return to scouting with activities both indoors and out. The first term we have covered badgework such as cooking and artist alongside our regular favourite activities such as playing Hungry Hippos and building with Lego. The autumn term also has the annual bonfire procession which is now a firm fixture in the Cubs calendar with a procession and campfire, songs and marshmallows. We also had many cubs attend the Remembrance parade.

After the Christmas break, the spring term was filled with various things from a town hike to discuss the history of HMS Brazen, digital maker badge and money skills. The pioneering challenge that I set the Cubs turned into a bit of a leader contest to see who could get their hero’s across the river.

During the summer term we really made the most of the weather with lots of outdoor activities such as the gardening and athletics badges being covered.

During the summer term we also had a camp for the older and younger halves of the cubs groups, which consisted of a hike to the camp at district HQ, erecting tents, cooking food for both dinner and breakfast the next morning, packing up camp and hiking back to Newhaven. This gave the cubs an idea of the hike camp hike principal of the Overland Hike they will be working towards at Scouts.

We also had two very successful evenings at Piddinghoe pond, kayaking and paddleboarding. This was a highlight for most of the Cubs with many having never taken part in any water activities.

This has been our first proper year back from ‘the covid years’ and it has set the scene for our next few years back to proper Scouting.

SCOUTS LEADER’S REPORT

The Group returned for its first full year of scouting in September 2021 after the pandemic and lockdown looking forward to a positive future.

The scouts returned to badge work at the hut working towards a full badge programme and the challenge awards towards their chief scout gold award.

The lifting of sanctions meant that the group was able to start planning trips and the group had interned to visit the RAF museum in Hendon during the half term but was prevented from doing so by Matt becoming ill with covid a few days the trip.

The two troops turned out in force for the St Georges day parade at Newhaven Fort,

The Troops combined to support a Seahaven District Team for this year’s overland event in March and for a novice team placed well for them to build on with the troop in 2023.

Unfortunately, due to work and family commitments no scouts’ camps were possible this year but a few of the scouts were invited to join the cub pack on their overnight camp and hike, where they took part in a campfire and assisted the leaders in the fun of the two days.

The year ended on a high with a trip to play beach volleyball in Brighton, which lead to lots of fun and laughter.

As always, we said hello to several new scouts from the two cub packs and from outside of the group as well as goodbye to our older scouts to Dragoon explorers,

We also said farewell to the 2[nd] Denton Scout Troop who have returned to their home Hall.

The 2 years of them collaborating with us had been fun and rewarding.

It was not the final farewell as the summer holidays meant the troop said farewell to Assistant Scout Leader Melissa Thompson who tragically died on holiday at the start of the summer break.

With the troop well represented at her funeral.

The troops have been hit by the loss of a fantastic and great leader, but the group under the leadership of Leon and support of Matt B, Roo, Sharon Bishop, Sharon Beer, Allan Bishop, Charlie Child, and Polly Pomfrey have pulled together to support the section and to look forward in a positive light to continue the beliefs and views of Melissa into the next year and beyond.
