The AGM was opened by our president Mrs Julie Grindal who welcomed all those attending including the cadets together with their officers were attending vi zoom.

The minutes of the previous AGM, proposed by Jon Bagust and seconded by Bill Mills, were unanimously accepted as an accurate record of that meeting.

Chairman’s report
I would like to thank all UMT members together with staff for their continuing support and encouragement for what the sea cadets offer to young people.
During the lockdown since November and our last AGM we have been extremely positive on fund raising with paying business rates we have received funding from South Glos Council together with grants that has enabled us to update the unit with various opportunities. This included improving the heads with a disabled toilet, this year we are hoping to provide easier entrance and exit into the unit to facilitate this for all young people.
Lighting in the Main building has been improved together with other improvements. Boating buildings have been updated enabling 2 classrooms to be available. Various equipment has also been obtained tables in the outside area made of recycled plastics plus filing boxes for cadets personal items.
Since obtaining lime status enabled the unit to reopen bringing previous and new entries cadets together. The unit is certainly growing with new cadets almost weekly. Staff are returning to the unit with enthusiasm to continue giving the sea cadet experience.
We celebrated 40 years of sea cadets in the Thornbury area with Garden BBQ Event which enabled all cadets, staff, UMT and family members to come together and celebrate the achievements of the last 40 years and looking forward to the future.
We were awarded a pennant this year this was an amazing achievement and huge thanks to OIC Neil Williams and the amazing team of staff and cadets who all worked very hard for this and really deserved the award. Actually, I think we deserved the burgee with everything that has been achieved but then there’s next time!
Further goals would be to increase staff numbers together with UMT and a parents friends group so we can continue to increase cadet numbers to ensure all our cadets get the best experience they deserve.
Commanding Officer’s Report
My report will focus on the progress of my unit 5 year plan, the improvements made during the pandemic period and the progress of the unit since returning to parading. I will also set out my plans for the future to deliver a wider Sea Cadet experience for our Cadets.
I can report that my initial 5 year plan did suffer during the national lockdown, this was due to the national ban being placed on all activities especially Sea Cadet ones. This put a 12 month delay on some of its progress but since our return to lime status on the 24[th] May it has gained momentum and I am confident that I will achieve what I set out in the plan.
I took command of T.S.Battleaxe in March 2018, having transferred down from North West Area, the unit has made significant improvements since then gaining efficiency awards in 2019 and 2020. I am awaiting the completion of our successful unit review process and am confident in gaining a further efficiency award this year.
During the national lockdown significant improvements were made to the unit headquarters, this included a total rebuilt of the unit toilets and facilities for cadets and staff alike, the re wiring and re lighting of the whole unit, new furniture and storage for cadets. The boat shed was re purposed making it accessible for all our boat trailers and 3 additional classroom spaces have been made available for use by cadets to focus on specialisation training in Seamanship, mechanical engineering, navigation and meteorology. The compound was also made safer by installing flood lights and clearing the space around the unit of undergrowth and replacing it with chippings.
Our recruiting campaign in June was a success with an additional 12 cadets joining initially, we continue to recruit cadets to the unit. Our delayed birthday BBQ was also a success with families and cadets enjoying the carnival atmosphere and getting a better insight into what T.S. Battleaxe is all about.
Since June our Cadets have been rowing, kayaking, canoeing and have visited our flagship in Weymouth, Our cadets took Royalist out into Weymouth bay crewed her for the day and even brought her back n to port and docked her safely. A huge achievement for our cadets, some of whom had only been a Sea Cadet for 5 weeks.
The improvements to the unit have provided our Cadets with a safe, secure and fit for purpose Sea Cadet unit, the proof of this is the progress our new cadets are making in such a short time in the Corps.
Our boating season will extend into the winter months and specific vocational training courses will be delivered during school holidays and at weekends, this will enhance our cadets development and make their Sea Cadet journey better.
I am confident that T.S. Battleaxe will when restrictions are lifted, embrace the wider experiences of joining in with district, area and national training and this help push and develop the unit into a Sea Cadet unit that South Gloucestershire can be proud of. I know that every one of our volunteers, Our Cadets and especially I am proud to be part of T.S.Battleaxe.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/03/2021.
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I
have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
