The objects of the Charity shall be: to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of pubjic events. However, the Society still aims to uphold the principal previously given i.e. to promote the appreciation of music by the presentation of public concerts and recitals. and in other appropriate ways; and to offer the opportunity for local musici8ns to play a wide range of classical music to a high standard. For a more detailed report please see Appendix 1 Havant Symphony Orchestra {HSO) presented a challenging programme for the outgoing Conducting Bursary Holder in October, a child-friendly performance of 'The Snowman, at Christmas, a popular'stage and Screen, evening in February and 3 other con￿rtS following the more traditional mix of repertoire. Chamber ensembles from the Havant Chamber Orchestra (HCO) were very well- ived at their aftemoon concert in February and the full Chamber Orchestra presented a fabulous concert in May. both concerts at new venues. Players have also regularly Support&￿ the South Hampshire Youth Orchestra events. b) Audience numbers Comparisons with previous years are unreliable as different, new events have appealed to different audiences. Numbers are approximate. Total audience numbers across the year show 1269 HSO (over 6 concerts) compared with 901 (over 4 concerts in the previous season, and 186 for HCO (over 2 concerts) compared with 252 (over 3 Con￿rtS) in the previous season i.e. 1455 in total in 2024-5 compared with 1153 in 2023-4. Ben was unable to join us for the first term because of other commitments, so we are delighted that he has agreed to continue in post for a further year to explore new opportunities locally. d) Members and Su orters The numbers involved have fluctuated through the year according to the nature and demands of the music being performed. Besides those 36 orchestral players who are officially 'members' through paying a full subscription for the entire season, there were several regular, attached players who were only involved in part of the season's repertoire, where membership was considered to be 'by invitation,, or where only a partial subscription was paid. This has proved difficult to manage, so will need to be clarified for future years. There has been a steady influx of new players wishing to join us. In addition, the Society had 24 Season Ticket Holders at the stsrt of the season. Others have requested to receive regular information as 'supporters' or 'friends of the orchestra, during the year, so that we now have 42 extra households on our mailing list. Members of the orchestra have continued to support the South East Hampshire Youth Orchestra with their activities, with several young players joining the HSO on a regu5ar basis. Coun¢ilk>r Ptrtsrwadè U51C The Havant Orchestras Section E - Flnancial Review of HAD S Season 1 Au ust 2024- 31 Jul 2025 1 The accounts show that, despite the several changes and some consequent Un￿rtaInty during this season, income (£35553) was higher than last year (£32141) although expenditure was much the same. The operating surplus 18 now £5993, significantly more than double what it was last year (£2516). The incomelexpenditure sheet (attached) itemises aspects of income and expenditure. Overall. HADOS concerts run at a loss, although as seen from the attached 'Concert losseslprofit, some perfo￿an￿8 have been financially successful. 2 HADOS continues to be relatively 'well off . cOn￿rt expenses, particularly because there have been fewer soloists, have reduced, donations have continued, and the committee has sought to be vigilant in managing the costs of the individual items contributing to Con￿rtS, such as printing. This practi￿ will continue. The development of a revised schedule of con￿rtS and a different range of repertoire have provoked a variety of responses from players but financially have been relatively satisfactory. 3 Subscriptions continue to be a thorny issue: some players pay regularly, some not at all. The reasons for this vary from a position of being invtted to play and so feeling that they should not paylthat the player is contributing 'in kind. to HADOSlthat they do not wish to pay a sub. The income from subscriptions in the 2025 season was £4417. In 2024 it was £ 5026. 4 Donations, both 'one off and regular direct debits, continue to be received for the Peter and Sandra Craddock Memorial Fund, which at the end of July 2025 stands at £23,320.10. Money from the Craddock fund will be transferred following a committee decision as to which payments fall within the Craddock fund remit. 5 The Bob and Beryl Harding Bursary fund stands at £20,770.30 at the end of July 2025. Expenses this year were paid to the 2023-24 bursary holder. Enyi Okpara (travel costs, concert fee) as the annual bursary concert was delayed to October 2025. And this yearfs bursary holder, Ben Quereshi, re￿iVed travel expenses and the cost of scores for this season and next (when he will continue to be the bursary holder). The travel expenses of bursary audition candidates were also paid. These monies will be transferred from the Bursary fund into the General fund before the final auditing of the HADOS accounts forthis last season. 6 The music library lending fees income increased this year by some £700 to £6077 although costs (£1636) increased by nearly £200- mainly due to the increased monthly storage fees for the music. This profrt from hiring music is an important element of HADOS income. 7 Overall situation: The current account bank balan￿, known as the General Fund, at the end of July 2025 was £26,161.18p. aking usic Rw8tered Charity No. 288747 P￿dent. The Craddock fund and Bursary fund were moved to individual higher interest accounts within the Caf bank on 24.09.24. The General fund balance on 31.07.24. was £22,571.31 p. 8 The Society aims to maintain reserves of at least £15,000 in its General Fund so that in the event of being unable to perform a con￿rt, contractual obligation can be met. We hope that the planning for next season will bring financial equilibrium if not success to HADOS. Tha Mayor of Havart C￿nc￿knr PaterW*la USIC The Havant Orchestras Section F - Plans for 202￿ 2026 Season an Issues for the Futuro Following a season with so many changes that we have sometimes found it difficult keeping on top, wPEn decisions have needed to be made without full consultation and when last minute crises have complicated things further, we are looking forward to a more stable year. with conductors who we are familiar with and happy to work with. and with a mix of repertoire including some more traditional works whilst still accommodating the popularist audience-plea8er concerts. We will also be supporting the Chamber Orchestra to manage its own season of con￿rtS independently of the Symphony Orchestra. We will be tightening up on protocols to ensure that we have processes in place and an effective timeline to work to. The Society is still dependent on a relatively small number of people. The need for non-players to help with tasks such as front-of-house and catering on concert days is being addressed to some extent although further discussion is needed. We have an urgent need for someone to take over the role of Treasurer. Other roles within the ommittee need to be discussed and defined. Re orton sical Activities for the 2024- 25 Season HSO Postcard from America - 19110124: Warblin Conductor: En iok ara This was the final COn￿rt for our Bursary Holder, Enyi Okpara, who invited one of his former RAM friends, Ellis Thomas, to play 'Rhapsody in Blue, by Gershwin. Enyi negotiated a challenging programme, the first of our new and experimental season, and although members of the orchestra felt under rehearsed. there were many compliments about the concert and repertoire. The piece by Errollyn Wallen was a particular challenge, but gave the orchestra good publicity as she had been made Master of the King's Music earlier in the year and was trending on X (Twitter}. Thomas Luke's performance was excellent and the Copland 'Rodeo' brought the concert to a rousing end. Our new venue was very welcoming and the facilities at Warblington School met with general approval. chool HSO War and Peace - 30111124: Oaklands School Conductor: Steve Green Steve Green joined us from the Royal Marines Band Service and the HSO enjoyed his rehearsals. An unassuming but clever conductor, he rehearsed the orchestra on a set schedule, and with his connections to the military, really enjoyed the chosen repertoire. We were able to experiment with 'effects' in the Oaklands Hall, including the sound of a Spiffire flying overhead to start the concert which added to the performance of Walton's 'Spiffire Prelude and Fugue,. The combination of standard orchestral repertoire and lighufilm music proved to be popular with audience members, especially as the pre- concert talk, given by committee member, Rosie Kendall, was about a member of the 'Great Escape, during IMN2. The Butterworth 'A Shropshire Lad, and Williams 'Hymn To The Fallen, proved to be particularly po￿￿nant moments in the concert, especially during the month of Remembrance. HSO The Snowman - 7112124 Conductor: Steve Green Our perfomances of The Snowman were greatly enhanced by the Christmas Carols played and sung before each concert, the addition of a professional actor, Gyuri Sarossy (a relative of Pip Langdown) and a local soloist, Alexander Moles. Steve Green was completely at ease with the audience interaction, and ernbra￿d the slight chaos of the audience participation during Leroy Andersson's 'Sleigh Ride,. Gyuri was a wonderful narrator, bringing the story of The Snowman to lrfe, and worked well with Alexander and Steve to make 'Walking in the Air, one of the most magical parts of the performance. It was wonderftjl to see the varied ages of the audience, young and not as young, enjoy the whole experience including the lighting, sound and power point presentation. Two erformances :Oaklands School HCO Ch Chamber Music- 2611125.. St Thomas, Church Bedham Ensembles from the HCO This truly was a 'charming' concert in a beautrful and welcoming church. The weather was less than kind on this particular Sunday but the ensembles were pleased to see such a large audience to support the con￿rt. The COn￿rt featured a fanfare written especially for the occasion by the HCO trumpet player. Jon Yates, two wind ensembles and a string octet. This concert was such a success that a similar one has been scheduled in our 2025 - 26 season. HSOANI ht of Sta e and Screen - 812125: Ha Conductors: James Thomas and Ben uereshi The HSO perfomed to an almost sold-out hall at the Hayling Island Community Centre. This concert featured music from films and shows such as Star Wars and Star Trek, and songs from shows and films such 'On The Street I￿here You Live, and 'Skyfall'. Both Captain Jack Sparrow and Darth Vader appeared, much to the delight of the audience, who enjoyed the variety of the programme and the 'current' status of the music. Our featured soloists from the local area Perry Ralls and Emily Harkness (both singers are performers in concerts and musical theatre with groups such as Benchmark Theatre) brought their own followers with them, and enjoyed performing to such a large audience. Our leader, Martin, played a wonderful rendition of the theme to Schindler's List, performing to a still and spellbound audien￿. Our only con￿rn was the parking at the Hayling Island Community Centre, and we cannot be sure whether the lack of spaces had an adverse effect on the final number of seats we could have sokl at the door. Island Communi Centre HSO In Tune Wlth Nature - 2213125: Oaklands School Conductors: James Thomas and Ben Quereshi This was a performan￿ dedicated to peace and mindfulness which culminated in the amazing 'Pastoral Symphony, by Vaughan Williams. Both James and Ben proved how strong a partnership could be, and it was delightful to see them work together and support each other in a myriad of ways. The concert started vibrantly with The Wasps Overture, and the orchestra perfomed The Rose Adagio - Tchaikovsky and The Walk to the Paradise Garden - Delius with great feeling. Our leader, Martin played the violin solo from The Gadfly- Shostakovich with technical and musical skill. and spen￿r, our principal clarinet, played his 'ad libitum, solo in the last movement of the Pastoral Symphony with eX￿llen￿ and expertise. HCO From the Earth to the S Conductor: Robin Brownin 60 Anniversa Concert The new venue for the HCO proved to be very popular with both the musicians and the audience. The Sacred Heart Church were kind and welcoming, and the facilities were exactly what we needed for our concert day. After discussions with Robin Browning and to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the HCO, we held a Young Composers competition for people under 25 who lived in PO postcode area. The winner was J Joliffe, who had already won a composition scholarship to the RAM, and we were delighted to perform his ple￿ 'Of The Earth, in front of hie family and friends. Catherine Lawlor, the leader of the HCO, played the Vaughan Williams Lark Ascending, with skill. beauty and gra￿, leaving the audience spellbound, still and silent at the end of the ple￿. Particular highlights were the wonderful performances by our principal French hom player, John Peskett, and tenor soloist, James Edgeler, in the Britten 'Serenade for Tenor, Hom and Strings,, the sweet Vol￿ of our young soprano soloist, Anna Irvine-capel, during Sullivan's '0 Goddess Wise, and the fabulous solos from mernbers of the orchestra, including flute, violin (our leader), euphonium, cello, cor anglais, the brass section and clarinet during 'The Fantasia on British Sea Songs. _ Henry Wood. Once again, Spencer, our principal clarinet, gave us a wonderful 'ad libitum, solo before the orchestra joined him with a rendition of 'Spanish Ladies,. Our audien￿, although sparse (there were 6 other concerts on the same night in the local area), enjoyed singing in the second half. ably led by our tenor and soprano soloists.
