I am very sad to report the death of our very lovely Pauline Robinson and should like to pay tribute to the amazing contribution she made to Nemca. Pauline joined the centre in 1982 as a Jollytime Playgroup worker. She then took over as manager until her retirement and then went on to run, as a volunteer, our Young at Hearts Club with Angie Godfrey. She was also a trustee. We will all miss her wonderful warm and friendly character and her joyful singing. Our condolences go to her lovely family who are all devastated at her loss.
It is 43 years since Nemca opened its doors and it continues to be a very vibrant hub in our local community. We have lots of new clubs bringing in new members and new partnerships with other groups in the borough thanks to our hardworking centre manager, Emily.
We lost the use of our annexe building, which had an enormous impact on space availability. With only one hall available, it has been a challenge to accommodate all the groups currently operating at the centre. The annexe has now been demolished and new plans are being drawn up to replace it. Local residents have engaged with us through a survey on the type of replacement required and have also requested that Merton includes our replacement building in his £15 million Legacy Fund. This issue will be a priority for the Trustees in this coming year
Financially, we are grateful; to Merton for its continuing support both with our Core Funding, Borough of Sport and Civic Pride grants. Also to Wimbledon Foundation Community Fund and KFC Tech fund for their support.
At both our Summer Fair and Christmas Bazaar we, had to tackle wet weather but despite this. local residents turned out to support us as they did with our annual quiz night. All helping to socialise with our local community and raise funds to support the work we do.
Our local councillors have held their six monthly Public Meetings here with our local Safer Neighbourhood Police team, as well as their monthly surgeries and their annual Graveney in Bloom Awards Ceremony.
Nemca has kept in touch with local residents through its six monthly Newsletter delivered to 4,000 homes and through regular social media and weekly inputs in the Graveney Newsround and local What’s App groups as well as centre surveys with existing groups.
Finally, a big thank you to Emily for all her efforts and to our Trustees, Volunteers and Centre Friends, who give up so much of their time to support our lovely centre and make it the vibrant community hub it continues to be,
Linda Kirby
Centre Manager’s Report Emily Williams Community engagement, Volunteer Engagement
As manager, I have enjoyed watching the joint partnerships evolve over 20242025. As a community centre with multiple, interconnected groups. We serve as a living network that unites people, shares resources, promotes wellbeing, and empowers communities. We have increased our joint partnerships this year by 38%. Volunteer Engagement also has increased and enabled us to create and run a number of new interconnected, intergenerational and inter-cultural events this year. These include all of those listed in the Nemca numbers 2024-5 section of this report and range from furniture upcycling workshops with people coming from East London and Surrey to join in as well as our local residents; visits to artists at Workshop 365 in Wimbledon; collaborations with Junior Park Run; the Dementia Hub; Little Ark; Made in Merton; WayWivWords and The Furzedown Project. All were activities suggested by our community, with our community, for our community. This is, in addition to our regular returning yearly events, such as our much-. Weloved fairs and quizzes. NEMCA has attended multiple community events promoting the centre’s activities including the BeWell event, various volunteer events including International Woman’s day. This as well as our paper newsletter that goes out to over 4000 residents in the ward and our engaging and busy Instagram presence helps keep NEMCA listening, engaging and projecting into the community what we do and how residents can engage with us. We also have feedback and comments books in the centre. We operate adjustments to groups in real-time based on community feedback which we actively encourage. We remain dedicated to having a symbiotic relationship with our community here in North East Mitcham.
- Volunteer achievements 24 25
A number of our adults were nominated and won awards at the Merton Connected Civic Pride awards. These include our much-loved Pauline Robinson who was celebrated for 40+ years of working with Jollytime Playgroup; volunteering with our YAH group and finally as a trustee. Also Marta, Carol, Danny, Judy and Pam all achieved multiple badges for their years volunteering at events, in the Coffee and Crayons and with YAH activities. Valerie was celebrated for her work helping in the NEMCA garden to keep it tidy. Also, Mary who has been volunteering at our Youth Club, was celebrated for 15+ years of service for dedicating her Friday nights to the youth here in NE Mitcham. We are very proud of all of our volunteers inclusive of our trustees and partners who put lots of hours into supporting our local community here at NEMCA and are grateful for all and every one of them. We have recently taken on 3 new volunteers and are very grateful for the ever-growing group of volunteers that keep NEMCA the place that we love and cherish and enable us to do the groups, activities and events that support and nourish our local community. Some young people were also celebrated due to their contributions within clubs here, such as Sofia. She is one of our young judo stars (that are part of the Judo club that is now established here having been supported by NEMCA here since 2023 when it started and is now in the top 10 Judo clubs in the UK.
Groups and classes
COFFEE AND CRAYONS Mondays 9:30-12 drop-in
Coffee and Crayons continues to be a success. We continue to keep it as a drop-in safe space for toddlers and their parents to engage with each other here at NEMCA. It continues to be a popular safe space for parents and carers of toddlers. This year we have added musical instruments into the Story and Song Time. This was based on feedback and it has been a 100% hit with the toddlers. It has evolved a more inclusive range of stories and nursery rhymes based on feedback from community and inclusivity and diversity training. Also we’ve introduced themed days for residents to attend over the year such as Drama Llamas, Junior Park Run, Apple Pressing Man (local allotments), Wellbeing talks (Merton uplift), 4immunisation information (South London NHS) etc. We also now have 2 more volunteers helping and have been lucky to receive some CIF funding to improve the play facilities outside to upgrade them which will be happening in the next 6 months so we can get rid of the old sandpit and will get some new play equipment as well from a Councillor ward funding grant.
YOUTH CLUB
Michael Kerridge
Friday 7- 9pm Drop-in £2 entrance. 11-19 yrs welcome.
NEMCA’s Youth Club runs “Term Time.” Each session costs £2 per young person. If an existing attendee introduces a friend they both get in free for the 1[st] session. At the start of the September term in collaboration with the youth club members we set monthly themed activities. Also, Michael our youth club manager supports our young people through personal mentoring and in other activities such as in completing their Duke of Edinburgh Awards and with any or all matters that may arise. This year one of our youth club members based on a visit from Attic Theatre has been chosen to be part of a theatre production that will be in the West End in 2026.
The members have enjoyed a range of activities this year such as sleep and stress workshops, drumming workshops, jamming sessions with acoustic guitar, visits from Hedgehog project, Amour workshop visitor from the Wallace Collection, Attic Theatre ‘voices of young men workshop’, a trip to the Young Vic, Pumpkin carving competition, clay modelling, intuitive artist visit and sessions with Massimo, Pool tournaments, Pizza Nights, Mocktail night, a TaskMaster session, a graffiti workshop, trip to Workshop305, and Eszining (creating comics).
FISH AND CHIPS LUNCH CLUB Thursday 1-2pm
Fish and chips group meets weekly and has a particular theme of reminiscence of the old way of lunching. It is our second lunch and social group weekly on a Thursday. It is lovingly set up with tea cups and teapots and (upon request) music from the era’s of the attendees. This year we have upgraded to home cooked puddings from Carol and Marta and have circled in some requests from members to have puddings such as rhubarb crumble and pumpkin pie. We also have aimed to reduce carbon footprint and costs in a sustainable way by using local and seasonal ingredients in keeping with feedback from members and have used apples, pumpkins and other foods such as tomatoes sourced from our garden, the Mitcham allotment and Mitcham’s local residents for our puddings. This numbers have remained static over the year despite promotion in a newsletter, flyers the local GPs and collaborations with a number of local services for seniors.
YOUNG AT HEART LUNCH AND ACTIVITIES CLUB Carol and Marta Lunch Monday 1pm - 2 Activities Club 2
A popular lunch, social and exercise group weekly on a Monday. This group has seen a new chef take over in Carol whose home cooked food has been commented on as ‘amazing’ by members. Food is homecooked and highly subsidized and over the year there has been a focus on increasing the use of low sugar and low sodium alternatives to align with healthy eating guidelines and health awareness. The lunch club received a food hygiene rating of 5/5 due the excellent hygiene and cleanliness protocol in the kitchen. This group has also continued its joint partnership with AFC Wimbledon who have continued to work with us to provide a movement and games instructor to do fun exercise after lunch has proved popular with the members. Activities over the year here include visits from the Dementia Hub, Merton Uplift, Wallace collection, NHS, Thinking Works, Wimbledon Guild and local allotment member Anthony to inform and support through talks, activities and visitors. These activities include mindfulness, apple pressing, wellbeing visitors, live music, carers support, dementia awareness. Also trips out of the centre were organised in collaboration with St Barnabas Church and a VE day lunch with specialist speakers and video montage and spitfire activities and singalong was heralded in feedback as the highlight of the year.
CHAIR-BASED EXERCISE
We had a specialist come and run a chair-based exercise program for seniors which proved was enjoyed by our local seniors. Chair-based exercise helps older adults stay physically strong, mentally sharp, and socially connected — all from a position of comfort and safety. It’s not just about movement; it’s about maintaining independence, dignity, and quality of life as people age. It also is a good way to provide a social outlet, helping reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness common in older age and builds a sense of community, motivation, and accountability to keep attending and moving regularly.
ZUMBA GOLD
Thursdays 8:15pm and Fridays 12:30pm
Our regular, weekly Friday Zumba Gold has been a hit and it involves a fun, upbeat fitness dance class to the beat of music and with disco lights. It was so popular last year that community feedback that they wanted another class and so we have introduced a Thursday evening class as well and this has also proved popular. We are lucky that we have a very engaging instructor Jessica who is very calm and good at gesturing the moves and it keeps our exercisers motivated and having fun whilst getting some good low impact exercise. It also allows the people who come exercise in an inclusive way as some adults with SEND may not be able to hear instruction over the music and we have adapted the class to enable all attendees to be able to join with a pan-inclusivity aim for exercise here at NEMCA. We have kept the group drop-in due to community feedback and this group has loyal attendees for both sessions despite there not being a termly fee.
COMMUNITY MUSIC - DRUMMING
This is a partnership with Flow Drumming and is a bi-weekly evening group that has community as it’s heart. It is a 2 hour split session with a drumming circle and freestyle drumming at the end and the break for tea. This has become a much-loved group at NEMCA and further collaborations with Flow drumming have continued such as a taught session at our fundraiser summer fair and drumming sessions with our youth club here at NEMCA. Community music has been shown to improve wellbeing in several key ways. Mood enhancement: Making music releases endorphins and dopamine, which can reduce stress and lift mood. Emotional expression: Mindfulness and flow: reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Social Wellbeing: Connection and belonging: Reducing loneliness: particularly beneficial for people at risk of isolation (like older adults or those with disabilities). Cultural inclusion: Cognitive and Psychological Wellbeing Confidence and agency: Cognitive stimulation: Resilience and coping: Physical Wellbeing: Reduced stress responses: Movement and coordination: Rhythmic activities (like drumming) encourage gentle physical activity. Community ties and Societal Wellbeing Social capital.
CHILDREN’S FREESTYLE DANCE CLASS
J & L Robinson School of Dance
Tuesdays
5.30-6.30 5-9 year olds 6.30-7 10yrs plus
The dance classes have continued going well and the number of pupils attending has remained high in both classes. All students who did their ‘National Association of Teachers of Dance’ Freestyle exams this year passed with Highly Commended . This is a high quality, very popular and highly inclusive dance group for ages 5+. Joy and Louisa, the very experienced teachers, have won awards for their teaching and dance instruction over 25 years. The children continue to also perform in high quality shows at fairs and in their Wimbledon Theatre performances and others across the borough. They are a huge asset to NEMCA. Freestyle dance encompasses many different dance styles (modern, jazz, street, disco etc).
SEWING with Little Ark
We had a weekly sewing drop-in with Little Ark on Tuesdays and was a drop-in sewing, textile and upcycling session. With community bringing items for repairs and getting support to use sewing machines, develop new projects, learn new skills and socialise. This evolved into a month long collaboration with Made in Merton to create items using sustainable models for the multiple community groups to use at the centre, created by the people that use the centre for the community that use it. A truly collaborative intergenerational group that saw community from across Mitcham attend including visitors from the Dementia Hub as well a range of local residents joining. All left feeling their mood was enhanced from feedback gathered during the sessions.
PRINTING WORKSHOPS – Made in Merton (collaboration)
This project involved a 4-way collaboration with 4 charities or Community Interest Companies (CICs) and was truly community-led, intergenerational and evolved in nature based on real-time community feedback. Made in Merton, Wimbledon foundation, NEMCA and Little Ark worked together with a total of over 20 volunteers and over a period of 5 weeks and over 160 hours to create a creative intergenerational series of sessions. This inaugural project was so successful that it has been ear-marked to be expanded as a model for other community centres in the borough. One attendee observing the project commented that ‘the work that you’re doing to support those who are often overlooked is incredibly valuable and it was a privilege to witness it in action’.
FAMILY SEND YOGA – Y for yoga with Pascale
This new group came about as a result of need and feedback in the community. This inclusive group is run by a specialist yoga practitioner and SEND teacher. We are delighted to offer weekly groups at NEMCA supported by a Merton Borough of Sport grant that enable families with SEND children from age 2 upwards to hold space and work in a Yoga environment involving storytelling, specialist equipment such as noise cancelling headphones and weighted vests and vision boards to enable all the family to join in.
HOMESTART MERTON
Home-Start Merton’s Happy Steps group runs every Wednesday during term time, providing a safe environment for parents and their little ones from pregnancy up to 5 years old. The group environment encourages socialisation, peer support, activities, and offers a lunch for both parents and their little ones
It started here in March 2023 and has helped each week up to 12 mums and 14 children. The group environment encourages socialisation, peer support, activities and offers a free lunch for both parents and their little ones. They have expanded their activities at NEMCA on top of the Wednesday group to parties here for the parents and their internal charity events as well and recently hosted their AGM here. It has changed leadership of the group this year and is now led by Sharon.
MERTON SOCIAL RUNNING CLUB
Our colab with Merton Women run sees women meet at NEMCA on Friday early mornings weekly to run in a group for safety, guided by an experienced run lead. So far they have achieved couch to 5K and other run sessions and it gets women out exercising and feeling safe running and also NEMCA provides a base to start and end the run
YOGA
Friday 10.30 – Experienced students 11.30 Saturday all welcome
YOGA has a central place at NEMCA and its classes are well-attended and popular class with a very experienced and highly professional instructor. Yoga is at the centre twice a week over the year and provides a place for people of all ages and abilities to be calm, JUDO centred and connect with other like-minded people and be healthy. Annie has been teaching y Yoga classes at NEMCA since September 2021. Annie says “Some of these students have health issues and it is good we can use the NEMCA chairs and I can store other Yoga equipment in the cupboard. A few of the students are in their 80's and they all say they enjoy the classes and it has been beneficial for them. Students appreciate the on-site car parking and being able to do Yoga in heir local community”. Our Yoga students are also very generous contributors to our fundraisers and raffles and often win great prizes too. Annie Rossi (Senior level Iyengar yoga teacher)
JUDO – Nippon Club
This started in March 2024 and has been a huge success. It also responds to feedback from the community for more children’s clubs here. Ages 5-18. Also it brings sports expertise in the form of 20 year experienced Judo coach Mario to the centre who, as well as his many awards, has been nominated and won British Judo as Coach of the year 2024. The classes run most week nights and the classes are much loved and well attended This partnership has also resulted in a number of further projects such as self-defense workshops and grants through Merton Borough of Sports having been able to be applied for at the centre and has increased more footfall and attendees to our other community engagement events. The Judo club is now top 10 in the UK having started here as a new club and Mario is now a team GB coach and one of the Judo club children is now in team GB.
TODDLER RUGBY now RUGBY TOTS
This popular Saturday morning group was started in response to feedback from the local community for more sports and activities for ages 2-5. It was run by a local teacher and parent and was a much-loved group that has a regular group of children attending but he had to leave as he ran it with his wife and they had an ever expanding brood. We are very lucky to have had a collaboration with Rugby Tots which has meant that this Saturday morning activity has been able to continue at NEMCA keeping little ones busy and tiring them out on a Saturday morning in the fresh air and in the centre on the more rainy days.
HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES
We were delighted this year to roll out our first set of holiday dance camps run by our 20+ year award winning and highly experienced dance teacher Joy. We have so far had excellent feedback from parents of children attending the dance camps which so far have been fully booked and have taken on themes from Lion King, Wicked and most recently K-pop Demon Hunters.
MULTI-FAITH GROUPS – ongoing and some new
We have a continued weekly presence at the centre of 4 different faith groups who use both our main hall and some have been relocated to the Scouts hall as a result of the other building not being in use. As of 2023 we have added a further prayer group to our groups that we host here at the centre.
HALL HIRE
Hall hire is subsidised here for our private groups as well as Saturday hire. This is to allow communities to gather and connect and to increase social cohesion and capital in the area. NEMCA hire for children’s parties and other community events on Saturdays continues to be a stable income stream for the centre, enabling a diverse range of members of the community to use the space and continuing to showcase the space as an inclusive and collaborative space for all. NEMCA has received very positive feedback around the hall hire staff and the venue itself from independent reviews on Google as well and verbally in-house.
PREMISES AND ACCESSIBILITY
This year NEMCA was able to use a previously applied for CIF fund to upgrade the floor. This was a very welcome and much needed upgrade. The new floor is non-slip, scratch resistant and hypo allergenic. On first using it I heard the dance children saying ‘this floor means we can dance better’ and straight away gave an uplift to the sense of pride in the users of the centre. Alongside this, there have been a series of accessibility upgrades> A new lock for the disabled door and a new, more accessible, baby changer and lower towel holders. This enables the centre to be an even more accessible premise. Inclusive to disabled and able bodies users alike. One mum commented that she comes from out of the borough to come to the dance class for her disabled child as it’s ‘the only place that is truly accessible for him.’ NEMCA is committed to continuing to improve accessibility and there will be a ramp installed on the back door to enable smoother passage to the garden over the next year. Also there have been new copper planters added to the front to help the centre feel more welcoming which also have bay trees in them and rosemary for use in future lunches for our YAH . group
