Chair's Report

2020-21 was our 38[th] year as a community hub in Graveney Ward

.

Despite the reduction in Merton’s finances from national government, we are grateful to the Council for recognising the work we do and continuing our funding.

From March 2020 the centre went into lockdown. Sadly, the centre had to close its doors. We took the decision to furlough staff immediately. We also, successfully, applied to Merton’s Coronavirus Fund to cover our running costs and were successful with that bid. We were also grateful to Rob Elvin at Squires Sanders for providing grant funding for our Toddlers drop-in.

Our management meetings took place on Zoom.

When the lockdown eased and nurseries were able to open again, our playgroup operated a reduced service.

The Young at Hearts Club team was unable to operate but kept in contact with his client group.

Tina and myself ran an interim lunch club until Covid level 4 restrictions kicked in. We then reopened when restrictions lifted and ran it until the end of July. The group that attended were very appreciative of our efforts. Thanks to Sharon, Nita and Priya for their assistance.

Sadly, we were unable to have our Christmas Bazaar, Quiz night or Summer Fair this year, which apart from being great community events are also a good way to raise funds for the centre.

We are very sad that Shirley Stratton, who has been with the centre for many years, had to retired from the playgroup through ill health. We wish her the very best for her health and the future. We were able to host a Covid safe garden party to say a big thank you to her.

During this period of closure we took the time to decorate the main building. New lighting has also been installed throughout.

With Covid restrictions lifting we have been able to open the centre again and clubs are beginning to return. Our numbers in Playgroup are low and sadly, Ballet, Salsa and Aikido are no longer operating at the centre.

Financially, things are tricky but we are doing our best to promote the centre and hope that we can soon be operating at full capacity as soon as possible.

Our thanks to Tina Humphries for keeping the show on the road during this very difficult period.
