## ANNUAL REPORT for the Year Ending 31[st] December 2021
Carhampton Recreation Ground was established by Deed of Trust dated 18[th] June 1982, the charity exists to provide recreational and sports ground facilities for public and club use in the Carhampton and District Area.

## **Objectives and Activities**
Our objectives remain clear:-
- To provide social and sporting facilities for the local community, at present the main activities are Table Tennis, Croquet, Yoga, Dance classes, Badminton and Cricket.
- To encourage physical and mental well-being, togetherness and avoid rural isolation.
- To increase the history, cultural awareness and knowledge of our community through the opening of the Heritage Centre and the Bookstore.

- To improve the social and sporting facilities at the Recreation Centre by holding social and fundraising events
## **Review**
The last AGM was held on 10[th] April 2019, Covid has severely disrupted the last 2 years affecting all aspects of life. This report will mainly focus on 2021 but will also cover the intervening period since the last AGM
2020 was an exceptional year for every single person in the United Kingdom, the COVID pandemic has affected us all in many ways and we as a rural community are no exception. The social restrictions imposed to combat the pandemic temporarily altered village life with imposed isolation, increased anxiety and no socialising. Now as all restrictions have been lifted and normal life returns it is hoped that the Recreation Centre can also return to a full programme of activities and events.
The facilities were used when safe to do so, which involved extra cleaning and hiring was restricted to self-contained groups who tested regularly. During lockdown the Rec field was an important green space accessible to all, the general use of the field increased allowing people to meet up with family and friends for picnics and coffee, exercise, walk their dog and provided both a physical and mental breathing space.
With the uncertainty of income only essential repairs were carried out, but as the government recognised the importance of physical activities and encouraged leisure venues to open we successfully applied for a “re-opening grant” and carried out a refurbishment of the Sports Hall.
Ben Elliot and his team of volunteers maintained the Rec field to a very high standard throughout the whole of the pandemic and must be congratulated for their sterling work.
## **Financial Review**
In both 2020 and 2021 only two fund raising events were held each year, this resulted in a very much reduced net income of £10020 in 2021 and £5055 in £2020 (figures include fundraising and sports income only). Set against this overheads were £10113 and £7846 respectively. The Recreation Centre was very fortunate to receive COVID grants via Somerset County Council and this has helped enormously and undoubtedly enabled us to meet our overheads and continue in a viable manner during a very unsettling period.
**Sports** – continued as and when appropriate, croquet as an outside sport flourished, on occasions three lawns were in play. Due to the availability of the Rec field, local dance classes were able to meet outside, these are now well established and regularly use the Long Hall. One plus to come out of the pandemic was that we were able to accommodate a teaching class when their usual facilities were unable to open and from the contacts made we now have a regular weekly yoga class being held at the Recreation Centre.

**Fundraising** – The teaching group used our facilities and also that of the village hall for approx. eighteen months during the pandemic; this had a very beneficial effect on hall hire income. The group has now moved to Bridgwater as it is more geographically central to their needs, but we are very grateful to them for their patronage during the period.
As previously stated few events were organised, however the bookstore has been an overwhelming success, offering an opportunity to recycle books and provide a vital link for residents of all ages to easily replenish their reading material. The venture has a nil expense with all bookcases and books being donated and so far has raised over £600 for Rec funds. As the bookstore is adjacent to the heritage centre it has been easy to steward both rooms, this has resulted in the opening of both ventures on Saturday mornings and Tuesday afternoons.
The heritage room being a smaller space was not able to open at all during 2020 and the planned programme of events has been postponed and is now in progress for 2022. Originally heritage income was kept in a restricted fund, but as all equipment has been purchased and improvements made, it is now fully incorporated into the Recreation Centre accounts. The overspend below is explained by the fact that all money was previously held in the Heritage Restricted Fund and this was used to cover expenses during 2020/1.

**Building Maintenance & Improvements** – repairs to the Recreation field and the car park have become necessary during the last twelve months, shrubs around the perimeter have been cleared and the car park potholes filled in. The dead trees along Sea Lane boundary are due to felled later this month with the wood available to local residents for use.
Previously used as a storage space, in February 2021 the area behind the stage was repainted and donated bookcases tidied up before opening as the village

bookstore. The Heritage Centre, Bookstore and the Long Hall stage were recarpeted with the aid of a grant from the Somerset Community Foundation during Jan 2020.
The Sports Hall was repainted, the floor sanded and resealed during the summer of 2021 again with the aid of a grant from the Somerset Community Foundation; in both cases the majority of the work came under the grant funding with the excess being paid for from Rec funds.
The Long Hall is fully refurbished and is now a welcoming space used for both leisure activities like yoga and dancing and also for social and fundraising events. The emergency lighting has been upgraded and is regularly tested. Repairs have recently been carried out to the back storage area and the guttering cleaned and repaired.
Our next project is to upgrade the gents toilets, some restricted funds are in hand for this but further grants and fundraising will be sought to complete the improvements.
Committee meetings are regularly held to discuss improving the facilities at the Recreation Centre and to formulate the financial planning and fund raising required to carry these improvements out.
Both Trustees and the Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have helped and given their valuable time during the last two years. As always the Recreation Centre could not function without the help and support of its committee members and many volunteers, they contribute to the smooth running and success of the Rec, helping with and supporting fundraising events, cleaning and the upkeep of the buildings, mowing and looking after the recreation field - their help is invaluable and very much appreciated.

With the uncertainty of income only essential repairs were carried out, but as the government recognised the importance of physical activities and encouraged leisure venues to open we successfully applied for a “re-opening grant” and carried out a refurbishment of the Sports Hall.
Ben Elliot and his team of volunteers maintained the Rec field to a very high standard throughout the whole of the pandemic and must be congratulated for their sterling work.
## **Financial Review**
In both 2020 and 2021 only two fund raising events were held each year, this resulted in a very much reduced net income of £10020 in 2021 and £5055 in £2020 (figures include fundraising and sports income only). Set against this overheads were £10113 and £7846 respectively. The Recreation Centre was very fortunate to receive COVID grants via Somerset County Council and this has helped enormously and undoubtedly enabled us to meet our overheads and continue in a viable manner during a very unsettling period.
**Sports** – continued as and when appropriate, croquet as an outside sport flourished, on occasions three lawns were in play. Due to the availability of the Rec field, local dance classes were able to meet outside, these are now well established and regularly use the Long Hall. One plus to come out of the pandemic was that we were able to accommodate a teaching class when their usual facilities were unable to open and from the contacts made we now have a regular weekly yoga class being held at the Recreation Centre.

**Fundraising** – The teaching group used our facilities and also that of the village hall for approx. eighteen months during the pandemic; this had a very beneficial effect on hall hire income. The group has now moved to Bridgwater as it is more geographically central to their needs, but we are very grateful to them for their patronage during the period.
As previously stated few events were organised, however the bookstore has been an overwhelming success, offering an opportunity to recycle books and provide a vital link for residents of all ages to easily replenish their reading material. The venture has a nil expense with all bookcases and books being donated and so far has raised over £600 for Rec funds. As the bookstore is adjacent to the heritage centre it has been easy to steward both rooms, this has resulted in the opening of both ventures on Saturday mornings and Tuesday afternoons.
The heritage room being a smaller space was not able to open at all during 2020 and the planned programme of events has been postponed and is now in progress for 2022. Originally heritage income was kept in a restricted fund, but as all equipment has been purchased and improvements made, it is now fully incorporated into the Recreation Centre accounts. The overspend below is explained by the fact that all money was previously held in the Heritage Restricted Fund and this was used to cover expenses during 2020/1.

**Building Maintenance & Improvements** – repairs to the Recreation field and the car park have become necessary during the last twelve months, shrubs around the perimeter have been cleared and the car park potholes filled in. The dead trees along Sea Lane boundary are due to felled later this month with the wood available to local residents for use.
Previously used as a storage space, in February 2021 the area behind the stage was repainted and donated bookcases tidied up before opening as the village bookstore. The Heritage Centre, Bookstore and the Long Hall stage were re-

carpeted with the aid of a grant from the Somerset Community Foundation during Jan 2020.
The Sports Hall was repainted, the floor sanded and resealed during the summer of 2021 again with the aid of a grant from the Somerset Community Foundation; in both cases the majority of the work came under the grant funding with the excess being paid for from Rec funds.
The Long Hall is fully refurbished and is now a welcoming space used for both leisure activities like yoga and dancing and also for social and fundraising events. The emergency lighting has been upgraded and is regularly tested. Repairs have recently been carried out to the back storage area and the guttering cleaned and repaired.
Our next project is to upgrade the gents toilets, some restricted funds are in hand for this but further grants and fundraising will be sought to complete the improvements.
Committee meetings are regularly held to discuss improving the facilities at the Recreation Centre and to formulate the financial planning and fund raising required to carry these improvements out.
Both Trustees and the Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have helped and given their valuable time during the last two years. As always the Recreation Centre could not function without the help and support of its committee members and many volunteers, they contribute to the smooth running and success of the Rec, helping with and supporting fundraising events, cleaning and the upkeep of the buildings, mowing and looking after the recreation field - their help is invaluable and very much appreciated.
