Unfortunately, due to the knock on effect of covid and the continued change in social activities the building is not as utilised as it should be resulting in us still running at a deficit. Hopefully the coming year will see an increase in the usage and enabling us to run a balanced budget. ## Hareswith Pond Our Outdoor Activity Centre and Nature Study Centre is still closed due to the Ash Die Back disease affecting a significant number of trees on the site. Over the last year, after surveying the site and identifying the most dangerous trees, I am happy to say that after a huge effort from a number of volunteer, current and ex club members, supporters and beneficiaries that we are nearly at the point when the site can be re-opened for young people to benefit from the unique wildness of it compared to their urban lives. This has, and is, a huge task which initially looked impossible for us as a small organisation. ## Woodland Trust Lost Woodland Project We contacted the Woodland Trust in June 2022 for advice about the Ash Die Back issue. Unfortunately they could only advise us about it but not help us with any assistance. They could help us under the Lost Ancient Woodlands Project to remove the invasive species of rhodedendrum and cherry laurel, covering 2 areas of the site, and replant native species of trees fully funded from their Lottery Grant for this purpose. They confirmed that 50% of the site was classified as Ancient Woodland, the land south of the stream, hopefully confirming the site's future and security for many years. The Restoration Project will start next year and the Management Plan, drawn up by Woodland Trust for us, we will be looking to implement once the Ash have been made safe. Looking forward to next year, as a self funded organisation we still have a mountain to climb but with the positives of this last year and the plans for the future we need to focus on building up the use of Old Town, maintainence/modemisation issues of both sites As Vice chairman I would like to thank the Trustees and the Management Committee for their ongoing support and work to ensure that this organisation continues to thrive and regain the busy programme we had before the pandemic. I have a special thank you to Trina Harris who completed 15 years as a Trustee as reported in the Youth Report and all the Benefactors and friends who continue to contribute their time and resources to support this organisation. Andrew Patten Vice Chairman Page 3 of 13 ## **TREASURERS REPORT** The Accounts for the financial year April 2022 - March 2023 showed a deficit of (£849.96),with a closing bank balance of £63,953.37. The reason for this deficit, was due to many organizations slow recovery from Covid 19 and the reduction in lettings, also our Hareswith Pond Nature Study and Outdoor Pursuits Centre being closed due to ash die back. **General Fund** - shows that there is a £963.60 credit; against the credit of £20,055.23 of the previous year. This reduction was partly due to Covid 19 having a knock-on effect with organization's/ lettings, etc. slowly coming back in and building up again, so although we had some lettings in it didn't cover the running costs. With the use of the premises only gradually building up, the opportunity was taken to carry out maintenance when not required, to service the premises. Our big thanks to our volunteer Tony Backshall, an old member from the seventies, who comes in almost every week to assist Tracy with things that need to be done. Ace Van Hire, based a few hundred yards from the club, continued to hire the carpark when not needed and this has been a good regular source of income. - **Storrington Fund** Showed a deficit of (£1811.56), being down from the previous year's surplus of £4288.46. This being the result of Hareswith lettings being cancelled and closed due to dangerous Ash die back deaceased trees, making the site unsafe to let, and the cost of tree surgery to remove the most dangerous trees. We now have many voluntary working parties down at the site, to get some of the over 100 trees cut down, to get the site safe for young people to use again. Our thanks to Marshall Surfacing for the free loan of Traffic Control Equipment. We give many thanks to the various parties who donated tools, materials, time and labour, these persons and companies being highlighted in both the Chairman's and Leaders reports. We are thankful to both Croydon and Horsham Councils for some Rate Relief resulting in some Business Rates being paid for the Croydon Old Town premises and very little for the Hareswith premises. We would also like to thank Tom Simmonds, owner of Allsave, who has provided the servicing and replacement of fire extinguishers at both Croydon and Storrington for the many years free of charge. We really do appreciate and thank David Weeden of Hamilton Eddy and Co for their continued support in providing Payroll services and Independent Examination of the Accounts and this Report Helen Jones Hon. Treasurer Page 4 of 13 ## **YOUTH AND COMMUNITY REPORT** Firstly I would like personally to thank Trina Harris who joined the Trustees when her children were coming to the club in 2007 and has served the club in many ways until retiring through ill health in July 2022. During that time her and her family have been involved in various ways not only as a Trustee but on one occasion stepping in to run the Holiday Scheme when no SCYP Qualified Staff were available! **COVID 19** continued to effect the club programme but gradually the premises began to be used again by the Community and the various Organisations. We continued working with user groups as we did last year and they were able to use the premises, when permitted by restrictions. **STORRINGTON** Following the Covid restrictions we found ourselves restricted by ash die back again this year. Ash die back is when the ash trees die back from the tips of their branches and the branches drop off, particularly in the wind when they knock against each other. This is of course very dangerous and we were advised to close the site after a survey showed that over 100 ash trees were on the site and one van in the car park had a branch fall on it. Working Parties of volunteers, led by Norvin, who also supplied Allseasons Hire Shop equipment free of charge, Kirsty, Philip, Paul and family, Dave, Mark, Andrew, Will(Tree Surgeon of Fox Forestry), Tony and Val have carried out many weekends and 50+ trees have been felled during long working days at the weekends. Our thanks to all who come and will be coming for a good time yet before we can reopen the site. Our thanks to Ruth and Allsave Fire Extinguishers for providing free equipment and servicing. In the Chairman's Report the good news is that the Woodland Trust have become involved and we look forward to their report on the Ancient Woodland Status that we now know it has and the Grant Application we have made to remove the invasive Species of Laurel and Rodedendrum to be replaced with native species of tree. ## **CO-OPERATION WITH THE COMMUNITY AND OTHER AGENCIES** **BALL GAMES AREA** was used by users when on the premises. **PUPIL REFERRAL UNITS** Coningsby and Moving On resumed their regular sessions. **BABY BALLET** classes on Friday mornings has been successful and have extended their session. **CHILD RENS BIRTHDAY PARTIES** bookings were taking place again after being closed for Covid **CROYDON DROP IN CONSELLING SERVICE** continued their bi-monthly staff training courses. **TABLE TENNIS COACHING** continues on Saturday Mornings **ST ART IT RIGHT** ran Holiday Play Schemes in Summer and October. It was good to see so many young people using the premises again. Last but not least may I thank all those individuals and companies that have provided support when it was needed most during another difficult year. Members built accommodation for 12 persons, 30 ft. x 20 ft. with two bunk bedrooms, kitchen/common room, toilets and hot shower. Brick built, elm board clad with Marley Tile Roof. Mains electricity and water. 30ft x 7ft Storage shed.
