## **TRUSTEES' REPORT** _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2024**_ 

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2024. 

In 2023-24: The Jazz and Classical Choirs delivered two Classical concerts, one Brandenburg Concert, two Jazz concerts and one combined summer concert plus a fund raising Spanish Themed concert; the Chamber Choir, led by **David Wordsworth** , sang at the Barbican; Classical members took part in a tour to Seville to deliver concerts there led by **Matthew Thomas Morgan** , (our MD Classical) in his first foreign tour with us – may it be the first of many; vocal technique and development class members led by the redoubtable **Alice Hyde** gave us an enjoyable summer Soiree; we provided an open rehearsal of _The Creation_ by Haydn in the autumn of 2023 plus two jazz workshops in the summer of 2024; and, finally, we recognised our much-loved **Jill Jarman** as our MD Jazz in recognition of her work for our jazzers. 

Two of our fantastic professionals gave us heart-stopping moments this year. **Matthew Hough** , our Deputy MD Jazz and Classical, had an unexpected operation which led to several weeks off and **Angela Sleeman** , our musicianship for singers and sight-singing tutor, took a dive too many on the tennis court and broke her wrist thus making keyboard playing an impossibility for some time. We are delighted that both are back with us in full health for the Autumn Term. Our thanks to **Jill** who covered jazz rehearsals and to those musicians who stepped in to help with classical rehearsals. 

We are now for the first time since lockdown not losing money – forgive me for focusing on this for a moment - but so many choirs and musical groups struggled to keep going in lockdown and post lockdown and to have survived and be back in the black and growing our membership is a relief. Last year our treasurer predicted we would break even but thanks to donations (including one of £5,000 from a generous member) and fundraising as well as subscriptions and supportive audiences we are replacing some of the funds we lost and with that we can begin to plan with more certainty and even consider additional musical events and commissions. 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements, the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019). 

## **Objectives and activities** 

The Addison Group of Singers (our formal name) is a Registered Charity (number 286808). Our aim is to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects. In planning the provision of classes and choirs and in our public activities we have regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance. We fulfil our aim in part through every member’s participation in our activities and in the way they develop their understanding and love and appreciation of singing and we also do this through our concerts, workshops and other performances where we share with our audiences that appreciation, and understanding of music and choral singing. 

Throughout this financial year we ran three terms of rehearsals and classes. Our choirs rehearsed at POSK – the Polish Centre in Hammersmith. **Jill Jarman** and **Matthew Hough** led the Jazz Choir and Ensemble respectively and the Oratorio and the Chamber Choirs were led by **Matthew Thomas Morgan** with **Matthew Hough** . **Alice Hyde** led vocal development and vocal technique classes at The Arts Ed in Chiswick. **Angela Sleeman** led musicianship for singers at the Grove Neighbourhood Centre in Hammersmith and her sightreading class continued on zoom. 

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

## **Achievements and performance** 

It was a very full Autumn Term. We began with a successful Open Rehearsal in September at St Peter’s, Black Lion Lane, W6 where we worked on The Creation led by **Matthew Thomas Morgan** and accompanied by **Matthew Hough** . Our first concert was given by the Chamber Choir which sang **Howells** Requiem with other choral works as part of the Brandenburg Festival Concert at St Margaret Pattens Church, EC3 in November again with both **Matthews** . A day later on 25 November the Jazz Choir delivered Bend it Like Bennett in a tribute to the work of **Tony Bennett** at St Andrew’s Church, Greyhound Road, W14 led by **Jill Jarman** and **Matthew Hough** . A week later, on 2 December, the Oratorio Choir delivered **Haydn’s** Creation at St Peter’s, Southfield Road, Chiswick. The soloists (and our thanks in particular to **Alex Aldren** who stood in at the last moment) were funded by a legacy left to the Addisons by our long-term bass member, Treasurer and Trustee, **Tony Benbow** . 

The Chamber Choir, led by **Matthew Hough** , generously donated their time to sing at a Carol Service for **The Upper Room** , at St Saviour’s, W12 on 13 December. This worthwhile local cause supports the homeless, migrant workers, ex-offenders and the socially disadvantaged to improve their lives and conditions. 

On the morning of 19 December, a Coffee Morning was held both to advertise the choir and to raise funds at St Michael-and-all-Angels Chiswick. And later that day **Gavin Bryars’** 80[th] birthday concert singing his celebrated work _Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet_ led by our former Music Director, **David Wordsworth** at the Barbican. 

The Spring Term was unusual in that the classical choirs were preparing for a trip to Spain in May and this term the planning really took off. This saw exceptional dedication from **Ian Wilkinson** and **Jerome Farrell** who organised and led the classical trip supported by **Miguel Dominguez** , our man in Seville. An ad hoc fundraising committee was formed to raise funds for the tour and also for the choirs. Our thanks to **Julie Davies** , **Claire Lachowicz** , and **Brian Thresh** . It was extremely successful raising £2,500 and reflected a lot of hard work by the committee itself and others who gave generously of their time and talents. In particular, a concert with a Spanish theme was put on with a very generous donation of musical excellence from, amongst others, **Ed Kemp-Luck** , **South of Broadway** and **Matthew Thomas Morgan** , and a remarkable queer tango duo at Holy Innocents W6 on 10 February. 

The spring Classical Concert _Sing Mortals!_ at St Peters W4 on 16 March 2024, led by **Matthew Thomas Morgan** and accompanied by **Edward Luck-Kemp** and **Charles Economou** (as Matthew Hough was hors de combat) featured the Oratorio Choir singing _Haydn’s_ **Te Deum in C** and _Schubert’s_ **Mass in G** (with other works). The Chamber Choir provided Spanish works by _Morales_ and _Rodrigo_ . This programme was to be repeated in Seville . 

The Jazz Choir and Ensemble, led by **Jill Jarman** in **Matthew Hough’s** absence delivered _Her Song in celebration of female songwriters_ in the Jazz Cellar on 25 March at POSK in Hammersmith. This wonderful concert with works by Joni Mitchell Dorothy Fields, Irene Higginbotham and Dolly Parton (amongst others) was dedicated to two former jazzers sadly no longer with us - **Jean Williams** and GB rowing international **Pauline Rayner MBE** . 

An end of term supper was arranged at The Thatched House pub on 27 March by **Alison Judah** for all Addison members. Many thanks to **Alison** who is also arranging a Christmas meal for 13 December 2024 at St Michael and all Angels – please add to your diary! 

The Summer Term launched with the May Seville trip with concerts by all singers on the tour on 4 May at the Chapel of the Hospital de la Caridad and by the Chamber Choir on 5 May at the Church of San Vincente Martir followed that evening by a dinner for everyone on the river front. The oranges were on the trees, the sun was shining, the Addisons were in full voice and the audiences were thoroughly appreciative. Our thanks to those involved in organising this fantastic trip are below. 

This was followed on 29 June with a joint concert featuring all four choirs in a psychedelic _Festival of Music_ led by **Matthew Hough** , **Jill Jarman** and **Matthew Thomas Morgan** at our usual venue of St Peters, Southfield Road, Chiswick. It featured **Rutter’s** _Sprig of Thyme_ , **Jenkin’s** _Jubilate Deo_ (in his 80[th] year), **Dove’s** _The Passing of the Year_ and fantastic renditions of _That Old Black Magic_ , _New York New York_ , _My Funny Valentine_ and an extract from _Hair_ amongst other jazz hits. 

The Summer Term concluded with the ever-delightful Soiree from **Alice Hyde** in the POSK Jazz Cellar on 2 July. Friends and family gathered to hear her class members _Making Whoopee_ with a little help from the audience who joined in the warm up and _Hey Jude_ . Make it a date for next year.

In the summer holiday **Matthew Thomas Morgan** and **Matthew Hough** fulfilled a commitment, made at the time **Matthew Thomas Morgan** was appointed, by re-auditioning the Chamber Choir. This was a significant moment for members who had to prepare for the auditions as well as sight read. The Matthews heard a great variety of prepared solos exhibiting the style and flair for which the Addisons are known and this enabled them to hear the voices of members in a way that is not normally possible. Singers also had the opportunity to give feedback with some very perceptive points being made which will help us in the future. 

And in a much-welcomed development **Jill Jarman** gave two jazz workshops at POSK in the Jazz Cellar on 18 August - one for all comers with part singing and sing-alongs and one \workshop just for Addisons on ensemble singing, jazz styles and improvisation. An innovation and a great day at a very quiet time of the year. 

**Angela’s** classes do not give a performance but class members benefit from her expertise and are sprinkled through our choirs and other choirs singing all the better for their work with her and inspiring other singers. Singers ae very welcome to try a taster class with Angela or Alice or a taster session with a choir. 

In all a very full and successful year. 

## **Financial review** 

The Addison Group of Singers is entirely self-funded through membership fees and ticket sales. Any donations we receive are used towards our charitable aim, which is to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals. 

We are also fortunate to receive sponsorship from **Horton and Garton** and we are grateful to them for their continued support. 

The accounts are presented as a separate document and I would encourage everyone to read them. 

We have a policy of retaining reserves to cover the equivalent of one term’s costs which we estimate to be about 4 months costs. The point of this is that in the event of a fall in our funds we can continue our activities for a term whilst deciding how to raise additional funds. 

## **Structure, governance and management** 

The Addison Group of Singers is run almost entirely by its members under a constitution that was adopted in 2015. The Trustees are voted in at the Annual AGM. They must stand down after three years. Where no member stands a Trustee may be co-opted. The Trustees and the two management groups are all volunteers and are ably assisted by **Frederique Genaux** , our excellent administrator) in supporting the professional staff in their work with the singers.

## None of the trustees has any beneficial interest in the company. 

The Board of Trustees meets twice a term. We now meet by zoom as a cost-cutting measure. We have other meetings as needed. The Board looks at the longer-term strategy of Addison Singers, monitors the financial performance, agrees policies and procedures and reviews the actions of the management groups, providing guidance where necessary. 

Under the rules, the Board should endeavour to ensure that Trustees are rotated after three years. This means that in the autumn of 2024 the following will stand down at the AGM: **Fran O’Brien** as Chair, **Nicky Scott-Knight** as Vice-Chair Jazz and **Anne Steele** as Governance Trustee. All were co-opted last year having served three years and we welcome nominations for these roles. I would like to thank Nicky and Anne for their work over the last few years and for their support to the Addison Singers. **Belle Conduct** has reached her third year as Vice Chair Classical in which she performs a vital role. **Belle** will also stand down - she has agreed to be co-opted if nobody stands but this must be her last year as she will explode if required to learn any more computer techniques. Anne, Nicky and Fran are also content to be co-opted if necessary but we hope there will be nominations for those posts. 

We do not have a **Classes Trustee** and would welcome a member who is prepared to fill this role. 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Board for their work over the last year and in particular **Gillian Chapman** whose first year this has been as Trustee (whilst also serving on the Jazz management group) and **Paul Elliott** who continues, as Secretary, to lick us into shape. 

## _**Management groups**_ 

Each management group is responsible for the planning of activities for each term in consultation with the choir director, drafting and monitoring budgets and tracking actions against the plan. They hold planning meetings at least twice a term. 

I would like to thank the management groups who continue to manage the choirs and volunteer their time and their brains to keep us going.  The librarians **Geoff Hollas** , **Suzy Farnfield** and **Viv Bales** deal with fluctuating numbers but keep us well supplied with music. **Ian Wilkinson** , **Stefanie Rohan** and **Steve Craddock** are the choir reps and represent the interests of the members. **Amelia Whateley-Smith** and **Nancy Turner** , lead a band of willing volunteers from all choirs in catering for our concerts. **Sonia Mohacs** and **Brian Thresh.** again ably aided by volunteers like **Clive Wren** , manage the concerts. **Claire Dines** , **Steve Craddock** , and **Jan Mirck** (with a little help from AI), get the publicity out for us (and Jan also does an amazing job with the newsletters) whilst **Bunny (Lesley Hoover)** , **Paola Nono** , **Jill Barnes** and **Sonia Mohacs** sell our tickets. 

Then there are the many other ad hoc volunteers including **Von Smith** whose cake baking along with that of other choir members makes a significant and valued contribution - £1,645.59 -  to our finances. Plus we must thank those friends of the Addisons who are not members but help us selflessly when asked. We also thank **Sara Ramsden** and **Heidi Langmead** for their sparkling work on Instagram.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of The Addison Group of Singers (the charity) for the year ended 31 August 2024. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act). 

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

Your attention is drawn to the fact that the charity has prepared financial statements in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) in preference to the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice issued on 1 April 2005 which is referred to in the extant regulations but has now been withdrawn. 

I understand that this has been done in order for financial statements to provide a true and fair view in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practice effective for reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2015. 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

- 1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or 

- 2 the financial statements do not accord with those records; or 

- 3 the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies** 

## **Charity information** 

The Addison Group of Singers is a public benefit entity. The registered office is 39 Esmond Gardens, South Parade, London W4 1JT. 

## **1.1 Accounting convention** 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”) and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102. 

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows. 

The financial statements have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn. 

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £. 

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, [modified to include the revaluation of freehold properties and to include investment properties and certain financial instruments at fair value]. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below. 

## **1.2 Going concern** 

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements. 

## **1.3 Charitable funds** 

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives. 

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors or grantors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements. 

Endowment funds are subject to specific conditions by donors that the capital must be maintained by the charity. 

## **1.4 Income** 

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received. 

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation. 

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

## **1.5 Expenditure** 

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. 

Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use. 

## **1.6 Cash and cash equivalents** 

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities. 

## **1.7 Financial instruments** 

The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 ‘Basic Financial Instruments’ and Section 12 ‘Other Financial Instruments Issues’ of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments. 

Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument. 

Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously. 

## _**Basic financial assets**_ 

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised. 

## _**Basic financial liabilities**_ 

Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised. 

Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method. 

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. 

## _**Derecognition of financial liabilities**_ 

Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.

## **1.8 Employee benefits** 

The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee’s services are received. 

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits. 

## **2 Change in accounting policy** 

Some expenses were previously categorised as expenses related to fundraising and publicity. These expenses have been recategorised to expenditure on charitable activities. The board of trustees has concluded that the change provides a true and fair view. 

Comparative figures have also been recategorised accordingly. 

## **3 Critical accounting estimates and judgements** 

In the application of the charity’s accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates. 

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.
