The Charity was set up in the 17th century to provide educational support for the ‘poor scholarsʼ of the ancient parishes of Henbury, Horfield and Westbury on Trym. Since it was registered as a Charity in 1979 Trustees have met 4/5 times a year. The Charity was bequeathed two properties, a school (now the village hall) and headmasters house/ boarding house.
The school became a village hall in 1979 (leased from the Anthony Edmonds Charity) the hall is run by an independent CIC and is in the process of being refurbished with the help of an interest free loan of £60,000 from the Anthony Edmonds Charity. This loan is being repaid at a rate of £250 per month ( £3,000 per annum) The headmasters house became flats but because of the nature of the building, in early 2000ʼs the Trustees were given permission by the Charity Commission to sell the property. The proceeds from this sale form the bulk of the investments which provides interest for grant giving.
There is a clerk who receives grant applications which are the discussed by the Trustees and arranges for investment details to be passed on to the Trustees at regular intervals. New trustees are recruited by word of mouth.
The Trustees meet 4/5 times a year and discuss grant applications. Emergency applications are dealt with by emailing the Trustees.
The Charity has supported m any local community projects as well individuals. We try to gain publicity and maintain a website with information about any restrictions.
The investments of the Charity are held with Goodwill Financial Services ( authorised and regulated by the
Financial Conduct Authority) 98 Holloway Rd, Bristol Bs14 8PG who manage according to Charity Commission recommendations. The Charity also hold a bank account with HSBC.
This is the first annual report which we have needed to write as our interest for the year is over the £25,000 limit.
