## **Report of the Trustees for the year to 30 June 2022**
The Trustees present their report together with the financial accounts of the Charity for the year ended 30 June 2022. The report is prepared in accordance with the Charity’s Constitution and the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities’ and complies with applicable law.
## **Governing Document**
The Orchestra is a registered charity governed by a constitution adopted in 1987, and revised in 2022..
## **Objects of the Charity**
The promotion, development and maintenance of public education in, and the appreciation of the art and science of orchestral music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and by such other ways as the Orchestra shall determine.
## **Summary of Activities**
The Orchestra was able this year to return to public performances, following the lockdown enforced as a result of the Covid pandemic in 2019 and 2020. The Autumn Concert, originally conceived as part of the City of Plymouth’s Mayflower celebrations, focussed on American music, The highlight of the programme was a performance of George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ by the world-renowned pianist, Joanna MacGregor, CBE. The programme opened with Aaron Copland’s ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’, which was followed by ‘The Symphonic Dances from West Side Story’, by Leonard Bernstein. As befitted the theme of the evening, the Orchestra ended the programme with Anton Dvorak’s ‘Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’.
The March concert opened with Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Overture to Candide’. Maria Wloszczowska, a talented young Polish violinist joined the Orchestra in ‘The Violin Concerto’ by Jena Sibelius. The concert closed with ‘Symphony No. 5’ by Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky.
The summer concert featured an eclectic programme of music ranging from Aram Khachaturian’s ‘Ballet Suite No.2 Spartacus’ to Tchaikovsky’s ‘Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture’, and also including Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Force of Destiny Overture’, ‘The Enchanted Lake’ by Anatoly Liadov, and George Butterworth’s ‘A Shropshire Lad.’
The Orchestra, which has approximately 70 members, is an amateur group normally meeting weekly for rehearsals at which it prepares programmes of classical music for public performance. Members develop their skills as musicians and are given the opportunity to perform music from across the classical repertoire. Members of all ages are welcomed, and the orchestra has some members of more than thirty years standing playing alongside students who have joined the orchestra more recently. The only prerequisite is that they can perform to an appropriate standard
As part of its continuing commitment to music education, the Orchestra has, in collaboration with the Plymouth Music Accord, subsidised free tickets for children to attend concerts, often providing them with their first experience of live music. It also

welcomes small groups of school children to its pre-concert rehearsal to offer an insight into the way the orchestra functions.
## **Additional Information**
The Charity continues to seek support for its activities from its members, its ‘friends’, and through appropriate sponsorship.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report on the Financial Statements to the Trustees of Plymouth Symphony Orchestra**
Based on the Accounts for the year ended 30 June 2022, set out in pages 5 to 9.
## **Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner**
The Charity’s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Charity Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the Accounts (under section 145 of the Act);
- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Act); and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the Accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the Accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the Accounts.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- a. to keep accounting records in accordance with section130 of the Act; and b. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met; and
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the Accounts to be reached.

## **1. Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The financial statements have been prepared under the historic convention in accordance with best practice as laid down in the ‘Statement of Recommended Practice Accounting and Reporting by Charities’ and applicable accounting standards.
## **Incoming Resources**
Incoming resources represent the amounts derived from grants and other income falling within the Charity’s activities.
## **Grants**
Revenue-based grants are credited to the statement of financial activities in the year when received.
## **Gift Aid**
Income Tax recoverable on donations received in the period which has not yet been received is accrued for at the balance sheet date.
## **Investment Income**
Investment income is accounted for in the period in which the Charity is entitled to the receipt.
## **Resources Expended**
Expenditure in included on an accrual basis.
