CHIEF EXECLrrivE'S REVIEW
The last 12 months has lelt a positive one in so much as I feel the organisation has
successfully moved from opernting on the backfoo¢ last year to the Iront foot this year.
This is evidenced by how much has been achieved with our staff, our care. our partners
and behind the scenes. Of courte ¢)ne ol the key pieces of evidence of our achievements
thks year came in the outcome of our Care Qualtty Commission (CQC) inspection. We
were delighted that the inspec¢ors xknowledged how we have gone the exrra mlle for
our patienu and the culture that we have crea*d around the orpnisation. A£•inst the
more robust inspection framework we received Outs(￿ding for our Care and Good
across all other criterra. This is a huge credit to the hardwork. passion and dedication ol
all the stafl here In alvrdys wtting the patienc firsL
Thls year has ieen further eyidence of pu¢tin8 'the patient first" wlth some innovatrie
enhancements in our care. From a patient nutrition pernpecttve we have Introduced the
International t)yspha8ia Diet Standardisation Ini(u¢ive (IDDSI) framework which enables
us to ensure that patients can continue to enjoy food through texture modified food5 and
thickened liquids. Thedore any of our patients wlth eating* drinking and svrtllowing
problems (dyspha8ia) can still eryoy f¢)od. We also saw innoyation with our bespoke
designed Safecare model whTrch we have rolled out across all teams. This tool ensured
that our staffing levels for a particular shift were alvAys apprcpriatr for the level of patient
clinical need. This has all been achieved in a year which saw us care for more people than
ever before. All of ovr services have seen a high and susralned case load. More than thi5
the needs of our patients conttnue to be rnore complex than ever before. Frorn the
bedded unit's perspeaive this resulted In us investing in an additional 3 staff members
whKh we have done by introduclnt the Nurse Associate role allowing for more staff to
ver nI￿t shift
All of this of course would not be posslble without the charitable support of the
communlty that we are wivileged to serve. A5 with most in the tharity Sector we haye
siru88led in the lace of ever increasing costs to the point v*here this year saw us budget
for a loss of £ I mlllion. Through effective cost control. focus on wicome and prudent long
tenn utilisation of our reser¥es. we are managing thi5. That said. it vras pleasing this year
to see such a Strong financol perf¢>m)ance. Even more pkasing 15 that this perfomiance
was achieved acros5 mukiple income streams and not down to a fortunate ￿le off ￿rge
legacy or donation.

As we look to mark our 40th anniversary next year. several thngs have never thanged
and nor will they. Our dedic3tion to providing outstanding care. Our gratitude ¢0 the
dedication of our TIo￿n[eers. Our reliance on the generosity of the communlty. The
passion of our suff. h Is with these in mind that I look to the firture optimism that
we will continue to be there for all the knily, when and wherever we are needed.

CHAIR'S REVIEW
l am pleased to be ab￿ to rdect on how wdl the Hosps¢e has man4ed over the last 12
months to thrlve and develop. We c¢)ntlnue to a see a rise in need for our serlices and
of course financial pressures continue however we have ended the year in a good position.
This is thanks to the ￿z01n8 support of the local ct)mmuniry who conunue to raise much
needed funds for us and the careful management of that money. We do our best to mike
every pound we receive zo as l*r as it can to hdp everyone need5 the support of the
Hospice.
We were delighted this year to IAve the stsndard and quality of our care recognised by
the Care Quality CommissK>n foblowing their visic and assessment ol our seNce5. They
appreciated. as do l. the dedication and skilh of all of our staff who make the Hospice
what It Is and our eth05 of putting the patlen¢ and their farnllles first in all we do.
Whilst recognisint our wonderful stth we also apprttpte the amazlng work and h<Jur5
given for free from all of our ever growing team of volunteers. We really could not do
what we do for our patien¢s and hmilies without the arrny of volunteers in so many Y4rled
roles across the charity.
The Board of Trustees contlnues to be committed to the Hospice and we have been
fortunate w recruit new Trustees in the last 12 rnonths vtho complimen¢ the skills of the
board. This w'ves us a stron& rnulti skilled and dedicated board workiryd alongside the
SeTher Management Te¥n to m￿￿tIon the succus o(the Hospke now and for the future.
One of our on¥oing areas of for￿ ix to continue to work with the NHS and campa(gn lor
an approprhte fundng contribution for the hyh qualiry care we deliver. Thi5 includes
highlighting the posltive impact the Hospice has on the rest of the local healthcare services,
as a result ol the care we provide, and Worki￿ in a colLiborative with our NHS
partnerk
As I come towards the end of my tenure as chair of the Board of Trustees l am proud to
have been in the privileged po$4tion to $UFPOrt the Hospice. l am confident the charity
will grow from strength to strength with the ongoing commitment shown by the local
community- the Hr>spice can only pro￿de the care it doe5 with the suppory donations

and fundraising that we continue to receNe from the local community year after year and
we are very grnteful.
Thank you.

in mind we welcomed our inspecuon this year from our regulator the Care Quality
Commission. The assessmen4 under the new Siryle Assessment Framework. took place
between December 2023 and Feiyuary 2024 including an 0Trsite visit on 14 December.
It was fantastic to see our focus, passion and dedication to patients and their familpes
recognised by the inspectors. Under a rw Inspecti￿ regime, which increased its
robustness Sn rntlng& we secured 'Outstanding' for our Care and 'Good' overall. This Ss
testament to all the staff and yo1￿¢ter5 who 80 the extrn mile for anyone we are

Our objectp￿S are to obtain reasonable assurance abou¢ whether the finantial

is a high level of assurance. but 15 not ¥ guarnntee that an audit conducted ¥) accordance

can irise from fraud or error and are considered mater41 if. indrlidualty or the

our procedures are capable of detectini irre8ularitTes, induding fraud is detailed below.
As part of our audit ￿nnIng we obtained an understanding of the leKal and rwlatory

identified were health and safety regulation5, CQC regU￿tIonS and The Generdl Dat3

We discussed wlth manwment how the compliance with these laws and retularions in
monitored and discussed policies and procedures in place. As part of tyjr planning
procedures. we assessed the risk of any non-compliance with law5 and regulations on
the Group's ability to continue operating and the risk of material misststwnent to the
accounts. We also erdluated management's incentlves and Iyporninities for fraudulent
manipulation of the financial statements. Based on this understanding we designed our

through management override or frdud. including in relatlon to cash income and

of fraud. We alx> discussed with manwment whether there had been any instances of
