The 124 Annual Soclety Meeting was held on the 1-3 March 2023, with a return to an Sn-person
meeting and a full 3-day programme aimed at covering both Scientific and clinical practbce elements
of neuropathology. The meeting is therefore aimed broadly at both researchers and dlagnostic
neuropathologist. The meeting remained popular with 159 attendees. The attendance fee was
subsidi5ed for students, early career ￿SearCherS and trainees re8lStrants in order to promde
educational opportunlty for those at an earty stage of their careers and to encourace an interest in
nèuropathology. The meeting opened with the Symposium on Skeletol Muscle Disorder5, covering
recent advances in pathology, genetics and therapy. The Alfred Meyer memorlal lecture was given
by Prof Werner Stenzel, from Germany, on myositls. The meetlng provided 5 scientific sessions and
26 poster presentation5, a substantial Increase over last yearfs on-line meeting. Shorter"flash"
presentstions were a new introduttion. designed to allow early Career researchers an opportunity to
gain presentatlon experience. A further Snnovation was the introduction of a clinical update sesstsn.
Aimed at diagnostic neuropathologists, two t￿kS were given by a leading expert, Prof Arie Perry,
from the Unlversity of Callfornia. A discussion sesslon was held for the diagnostlc External Quality
Assurance IEQAI scheme (see below). Sessions were also held for the Professlonal Affairs
Committee, whlch examines matters relevant to cllnicèl practice in diagnostlc neuropathology, and
for the general Buslness Meeting of the Society.
Ort 2023
The Socievs aim of providlng continued further educatlon was addressed via the organtsation of
educational everrts. The BNS sponsored a symposium at the Brit15h Neuroscience Assoclation
conference in Brighton and this was organised by BNS members. The theme was 'lmmunotherapy in
neurodegeneTrtTve disease5" and was very well attended. Planning was Jlso begun to restart the
BNS residential summer school in 2024, which will be held at Cirencester with the theme of
'Yechnology advan￿MentS pushing the boundaries of neuropatholo8y dia8n05tic and research".
The BNS made a contribution l£lOtKJl to the Royal College of Patholo815ts summer 5ch¢)ol. This is
deslgned to encourage interest In pathological specialtles, and our contribution allows us to
promote neuropathology to undergraduates.
The Society continue5 to run its small research grant and bursary scheme5 to support early research
activity and provSde pilot data for projects. with a value of up tts £5000, the BNS awarded 10
resèarch grants out of l- submitted, split between Spring and Autumn round5 (total value £50,000).
These are administered by the Academic Chair Jnd supported by review from the academic
subcommittee. There were 7 application5 for travel bursaries, all funded, and 8 applications from
Junior staff to attend the 8N5. The BNS scheme to fund electThie5 for medical students was open
again this year but none of the 3 applications were related to neuropathology and 50 were out of
scope for the award. A declsion was taken to increase the value of travel bursarles from £5￿ to
£750 to reflect tncrèasing costs of attending meetings. The society further.supports the
International Soclety of Neuropathology IISNI and the European Neuropathology Soclety IEuroCNSI

vla payment of yearly per capita member 5ubxription fees. which allows BNS members to engage
with these bodles and their activitles/publication5, Including access to the EuroCNS loumal, Clinical
Neuropathology. The BNS funded 3 places for diagnostic neuropathol(￿ tralnees to attend
diagn05tic tralning courses in Europe, organlsed by EuroCNS. The society is also affiliated to the
Jolnt Neurosciencès Counsel of the United Kingdorn.
The soclety's finances continue to benefit from royalties generated by its journal, Netsmpathohgy
ondAppliedNeurobiology. The journal is published on behalf of the Society by Wiley. Royalties
recelved constitute the bulk of the societvs annual income as in the past. The society subsidises
members, subscription to NAN Iboth the onllne and paper coples of the journal). though the higher
membership fee. which ha5 now been implemented will decrease the subsldy. No fundraising
actl¥ities are undertaken by the soaety.
The Society contlnues to provlde substantial support to maintaining diagrK)stic neuropathology as
Gmc-recognised irbdependent medical special￿¥ with conslderable engagement in the recruitment,
curriculum setting and assessment activities relevant to the speciality. This includes the
development of standards documents by the professional affairs Committee. The Society bankrolls a
model External Quallty Assurance IEQAI Scheme, whlth is fulty digitlsed. Hlgh level participation and
continuous review of the scheme ensures continued public Confiden￿ in the national
neuropathology service. The 8NS also maintains a website Iwv*w.bns.or
.uk l ès a portal to inform
members of thè 5ocietVs activitles and award schemes. WÈ contlnue to update this and a project to
upload archival documents from British Neuropathology has been carried out.
