The Manna House Trust {fomially Th8 Northampton Chrlsllan Cenlres Trust) is registered by the
Charlty Commission (No: 2883581 and is gov8rn8d by a Irust deed daled 23 August 1982 and a
supplemental deed daled 8 January 1983. Further amendments were made on 8 May 2003
changing two parts of th8 constltutlon and the charity's name. The Charity Commission a¢¢8pted
these changes on 26 February 2004 and the charity has been known 88 the Manna House Trust
(MHT) with effect from Ihls date.
Mindful of th8 need for changes to the objècts of the Trust In order to refloct the on￿OIng and
8volvlng work of serving the wider communlty, especlally w)st Covid pandemlc, and havlng tsken
professlonal legal advice on the appropriat8 wordlng for the new objects. together with specific
guidanc8 from th8 Charity Commission In respect of the procedure to be followed, on 31 January
2024 MHT approved an additional supplem8ntal change and resolvad..

Th8 Manna House Trust (MHT) Iherefor6 remalns a long-slandlng Chrlsllan charlty based In
Northampton and through Ihe Manna House Coun88lllng Servlce (MHCS) provldes access to
professlonal counselling services. accrediled training courses to potenllal counsellors and
pasloral ¢arers, and health and wellbelng workshops. tralnlng and resources, available to
everyone In Northamptonshlre, irrespective of background or ability to pay.
Review of the actlvltle$ and achigvernonts
This review of the Trust's actlvSlles beginning in October 2022 and endlng M8rth 2024 ¢overs a
perlod of slontficant challenge. growth and change, nol least In brlnglng th6 reportlng year In Ilne
with the financlal y6ar.
In May 2023, after 40 years, MHT'S founding director retired. A new CEO wa8 appolnted In June
2023 and has overseèn changes to both the straleglc and oparatlonal dlrecllon of MHCS. Thls
at a time of real challenge to the public health fundlng landscape, to charltable finances and
service delivery. MHT hag continued, however. in ils vision to develop MHCS as the counselllng
58rvice of cholce available to everyone in Northamptonshlre. provlding a well-resp8cl8d
Chrlsllan servlce of hope, meanlng and purpose to all.
MHCS offers low-cost subsidised counsellln9 to evèryone who Is referred, acceptlng only
donations for the work of Ihe Manna Hous8 Tnjst accordlng to a recommended s¢alo basgd on
household Incorne, On avorage MHCS r8c8lv8d £6.15 per session from cllants over thls
etghteen-month reportlng period. However, counselllng costs £55 per session to deliver. Thanks

to se¢viGe conlracts for Prlmary Care Interventions from the Menlal Health Northants
Collaboration. successful fundlng 8ppllcation$ to the Northampton Communlty Foundallon and
to oth6r local charilles and fundèrs. MHCS h88 boÈn able to contlnue to offer free and funded
sesslons to thos8 most in n8ed.
Belween 2022- 2024 MHCS provided 2.831 counselling sesslons to over 100 clients 8a¢h and
every month. Most ¢lients recelved between 12 - 20 sessions {some signlficantly mor8
dependlng on need and presenting issues.) Unfortunately, durlng thi8 period ther6 was a rfse In
'late cancellations. and 'did not attend sessions, recorded al 375 In total or 21 missed sessions
per month, MHCS Is gratefvl lo the Natlon81 Lottery Community Fund for awardlng £9.926 In
September 2023 to research Into the reasons for LC and DNA, and to provlde mitigations and
support to clients experienclng dlfficulty Ir* accessing services.
Ref8rr8ls received durlng this reporting perlod totalled 193 wllh the majority belng sglf-referrals,
from famlly and frtends, and from GP practlceslsocial pr6scrfbers. The wailing Ilst In Octobor
2022 slood at 68 clients. Due to successful fundlng applIca￿on6 and an increas6 In the total
nurnber of counselliny stsff hours, by Mar¢h 2024 the waiting list had b86n reduced to 36
cl￿nts. Staffing levels and the nominal rol@ dld, however, fluctuate and MHCS experienced a
reduction in Ihe over811 avallability and numbers of volunteer ¢ounsellor8, resulting In th6 need
to employ pald s8sslonal counsellors from October 2023. Thls was partl¢ularly important to th8
north of the county In order to meet contractual commltments to MHNC-PCI fundlng. As of
March 2024 the nominal role stands at 5.1 Whole Time Equlpment (seven slaff member$
including four staff counsellors). 5 sesslon81 counsellors. 6 volunteer counsellors 8nd 2 Ir8inlng
tutors. MHCS also benefits from 4 counselllng supervisors under contract.

backgrounds, irrespective of falth or abillty to P8y, to talk to a professionally Iralned counsellor
about whatever is on thelr mlnd and rec8lve 8xcellent mentsl hèalthcare servlces..
"We beliave that good mental health care is a universal human right and we are dedlcated to
addressing the Inequalities In mental health and worklng toward8 good mental health for all. nol
just for those who 8r8 abl8 to afford counselllng and g(￿d wellbelng servlce provision..
As well as providing counselllng s8rvlces, MHCS has also offered free wellbeing workshops on
depresslon, peer support, anxl8ty, an9er managemont. stress and emotional r8silienc8, life
translI￿ns, self-awarene88, food and mood, forgiveness, depression, Mlndfulness and
8plrltualily. Primarily these hav8 been provided through m8mb8rshSp of the Mental Heallh
Northants Collaboratlon (MHNC) Wellbelng EdLtcation Network IWEN)- 18 courses of between
flve to Six Sessions each dellv8r8d during this period. In addltion MHCS h8s also d611v6red Its
own Wellb81ng Programme of workshops (In-p8rson and remote vla Zoom) to a number of other
¢harilies, organlsalions and indlvidual$, as well as weekly In-person peer support groups.
MHCS has remalned det6milned to conlinue to provlde wst effectlve ways Into counselllng
training and practlce by deliverlng accredlled low cost courses to students Iralnlng lo be
¢ounsellors, sup8rvlsors and pasloral Cafe workers of th8 future. As a tralnlng centre MHCS has
welcomed studenls from rnany backgrounds and educational experlenGe$ on Lev812, 3 and 4
CPCAB valklaled courses. The tr8nsltlon from the Open College Network lo CPCAB
accreditation began in 2021122 and was complated in 2023124. Durlng this period seven Level 4

students graduated and a new cohort of frfteen students $l8rt8d on the Iwo year tralnlng course.
A furth8r twenty-four sludenls completed Level 2 and Level 3 Iralning.
Covld, the cost of livlng crisis and increased economlc. employment, polili¢al uncertalnly and
Insecurity impacted many people in our community belw8en 2022 - 2024. Not least those at ih
lowesl end of the socio-economic spectrum, Even though a number of 5p8clflc service proj8Cts
have been developed - Walllng Llst Reductlon, Cost of Llving Initiatlve, Gypsy, Roma. Trav611er
Sulclde Preventlon and Counselllng Servic6, Volunteer Llst6ners Prolecl, Counselling Bur5arles
and Old8r Peoples Proje¢t- MHCS has conlinued to experience hlgher numbèrs of longer lerm
Clients with complex mental health needs, often due lo poverty and the co81 of Ilvlng crfsis, wlth
people requiring longer lerm counselllng care and support closer to home. Slnc8 th8 pandemic
and as people emerged from lock down and a return to "normal" routines. there have also been
many challenges to face such as lonellness, bereavement. loss of Int&gratlon, loss or change of
employment and employment pr8Ctlces. loss of confi'dence.
Th8 post Covid world has seen people who have become more Isolated, fearful, faclng
unc8rtalnty about the future and many wrestllng wllh unr6solved Ios6 and grièf Issues across all
gender8, races. religions, ages, 8bllltles, cultures. classes, edu¢ation, 6thnlclly, sexuallly and
splritualities. There has also bé6n an I￿rease in PTSD and moral trauma.
All this al a Ilmg when funding provislon has been cut to many charilles and morè targeted,
truncated and shorter-term provS8Son offered. Thls has led to an Increase In demand of some
100h lo 12Vo for services resultlng In flu¢lu8tlons In walllng tlmes. Coupled wllh this, the cost-of-
Ilving crisis has made It increasingly difficult to recrult and retain MHCS staff and volunteers.
Early in 2024 the M8nna House Trust Board made the declslon to sell the property at 73 St
Glles Slreet, Northamplon, and to seek to find more mod6m. flexlble and efflciont space,
centrally loca18d In Northampton, for all MHCS s8rvices. There were many reasons for doing 80.
not least Ihe need to rele88e Gapltal to ensure seNI¢8 conllnuity. In addRion, the layout and age
of the bullding with the majority of counsellSng rooms accessible only after Climbing thrè8 flights
of slalrs, and havlng only limited. shared space for trainlng and wellbeing wursès. hasn't helped
in development and expanslon of services to meel the needs of clients, students and staff.
Throughout 2023 heating. Ilghtlng and maintenance costs were f88t Increaslng. At the same
Ilme fundlng streams and publlc health contracts fell 8i9nlfl¢antly and were proiected lo decline
further In 2024125.11 becam6 Increasingly difficult during the GOSt-of-Ilving crisls to ke8p low
cosvno cost counselllng, trginlng and wellbeing servlc8s avallable. Much thought went Into how
MHCS might better use th6 building- the attic and basement n8eded complete renovatlon aTr
Ihe whole building needed converslon, reordering and redecorating. A Valuallon Report,
undertaken for the purpose of compliance wlth the Charf118s Act 2022 and Charities
(Dlsposl￿ons of Land.. Designated Advlsers and Reports) Regulations 2023. was Inslru¢ted on
22 January 2024 and completed on 20 March. The cost of converslon and refurbi8hment was
put In the region of £200,000 and requlred plannlng permlsston.
The Trust therefor6 looked lo relocate its servic&s closer to people and populallon centres -
Northamptr)n, Corby and Kett6rlng - and sought more cost-effectlve use of room8 and spa
working with partners, other charilles and members of MHNC, aoross the wunty. In
Northammon MHCS has been worklng with the University of Northampton and St Andrew's
Healthcare. In Ketterlng wlth C2C and Teamwork Trust. and In Corby with Teamwork Trust and
th6 Autumn C8nlre.
