Trustee selection method: by nomination, election and co-option. ## **Summary of the Objectives of the Charity, as set out in the governing document:** To promote the musical education of, and the enjoyment and performance of orchestral, instrumental and vocal music by children, young people and their families, principally in the County of Cambridgeshire. ## **Summary of the main activities in relation to these objectives:** To offer children and young people holiday music courses in the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays. The Committee together with the appointed Music Director will engage a Course Director and Music Tutors to provide high quality music sessions normally culminating in end-of-course presentations in a concert hall for an audience of family and friends. When face-to-face music is impossible, such as in the Covid-19 pandemic, all attempts will be made to provide online musical activities. ## **Achievements and Performance.** The Christmas 2019 - January 2020 course ran as normal, with large numbers of children and around fifteen different activities. Standards were high, with an extra conductor being hired in order to free-up the Course Director. The Easter Course was planned, tutors and venue were hired, members were informed and many bookings were taken. However, the situation with the novel corona virus was getting worse and on March 10th 2020 we cancelled the course. As time went by it became clear that for the foreseeable future face-to-face courses would not be possible. Therefore for the Summer we organised a large individually recorded compilation of a piece by Purcell, together with a live online Junior Choir session and four Grade 5 Theory lessons. These were all very popular and served to keep us going, remind people that we are still here, and provide children with at least some music-making. ## **Financial Review:** The Charity's principal source of funds is the fees for the courses, which this year only applied to the Christmas Course. Cancelling the Easter Course so late meant that we had to pay half the hire cost of the venue, together with the fees for the tutors for all they had prepared and committed to do. We had to refund all the bookings which had been made, so this course registered a considerable loss. The Summer 'virtual' Course was free to all participants and although we paid several of our tutors to make individual teaching videos and also paid the cost of editing the compilation, we had no venue cost so the loss was not so great. At the start of this year Holiday Orchestra's finances were very healthy, and so when the pandemic hit we decided it was more important to keep going than to maintain a large bank balance. We still have comfortable reserves and will hope to continue running 'virtual' courses until it becomes possible, sometime in 2021, to return to normal functioning. The Committee continues to fund new ways of offering musical education of high quality, and of keeping children engaged with making music together. I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination.
