In January2021theExecutiveCommitteeappointedDrLisaGodfrey,whoisco-optedontotheExecutiveCommittee.Lisa is currentlya ProjectToxicologistatAstraZenecawhereshedesignsandinterpretstoxicologyresearchprogramstoenable clinical development.I would like to welcome Lisa to this new role and look forwardto workingwith her on this very important initiative. The contracthas been signedand work is aboutto commencethis month,March2021. My thanksto ProfessorPaulBaldrickand the ScopingTeamforgettingthisprojectunderway.DrFionaSewellwillnowleadthenextstageofthiswork.Further information will be provided through the NewsFeed and Social Media on website developments. ``` ## **`Engagement of our Early Career Scientists`** ``` The ExecutiveCommitteehas recognisedthat our early career scientistshave a particularrole to play,bothwithinthe BTS and in thebroaderscientificcommunity.HavinglookedatcompositionofthemembershipoftheExecutiveCommitteeand its Subcommitteesitwasfeltthatthatthevoicesofthoseatanearlystageintheircareerareunder-represented.The Executive Committeediscussedwaysmorecouldbedonetoincreaseinvolvementandbetterserveourearlycareermembers.We have now establisheda Networkfor EarlyStageToxicologists(NEST)as an opt-incommunity,makingbest use of socialmedia,as well asfacetofacenetworkingopportunitiesatcongresses,tobuildacommunityandfeedideasintotheExecutiveCommittee to support those at an early stage of their career. The Executive Committee look forward to working with NEST. ``` ``` NEST will be tasked with coordinatingearly career networking,as well as careers outreachin universities,giving scientificinput to helpshapetheBTSCongress,andprovidingearlycareerrepresentationinthevarioussubcommitteesoftheSocietyand in particularScience,CommunicationsandEducation,CareerandTrainingDevelopment.Dr NevineAmer has been electedas Chair of NESTandwillbe a co-optedmemberof theExecutiveCommittee.I wouldliketotakethisopportunityto welcomeNevine to theExecutiveCommitteeandastheinauguralChairofNEST.MythanksareduetoDrDavidMasonforgettingthis initiative started. ``` ## **`Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)`** ``` AkeyareafortheBTSisensuringthatweareequitableandinclusive.OurEDIambassadors,DrsEmmaMarczyloand David MasonarecurrentlyreviewingourEDIPolicyandconsideringhowwecanbetterengagewithallourmembersand recognising key EDI events throughoutthe year. The ExecutiveCommitteewill also be undertakingEDI trainingwith an externalconsultant in the next few months. ``` ## **`Risk Register`** ``` Wetooktheopportunitytoreview,andupdate,theSociety'sRiskRegisterandtoconsideranyeffectsBrexitorthe pandemic mayhavehad/willhaveonthesustainabilityoftheSociety.I am pleasedtoreportthatasa Societythepandemicdidnot have anyeffect on ourfinances,andwe are financiallysoundandsustainable.Brexitcurrentlyhas nothadanyeffectson the Society, butwe areconsciousthattherecouldbefutureimplicationsfortheSocietywhichwillbemonitoredthroughourRisk Register. We are keeping a watchful eye on this and will ensure we are able to meet the challenges Brexit may pose in the future. ``` ## **`Interaction with other Societies`** ``` One of the strategicobjectivesof the BTS is to promoteinteractionswith other scientificsocietiesand organisationsto meet both ourmissionstatement"To providethe principalforumfor toxicologyin the UK, to supportandenrichthe carersof toxicologists, and to promotethe importanceand advancementof toxicologyin the wider and lay communities"and vision to "drive excellence intoxicology".OurworkwithotherLearnedSocietiesandProfessionalBodiesensureswehaveavoice,feedinto consultations applicableto thedisciplineof Toxicologyandhaveseatat thetableto lobbytheGovernmentwhererequired.It is a pleasure to work closely with the following organisations: ``` ``` UKRegisterofToxicologists-theBTSisasponsoringorganisationandhaverecentlysignedaMemorandumof Understanding. Dr Camilla Alexander-White is the RSC representative on the Scientific Subcommittee. ``` ``` The RoyalSocietyof Biology(RSB) - the BTS is a Member Organisation.This facilitatescommunicationand the BTS can contribute toconsultationpapersandpolicydocumentswhicharecoordinatedbytheRSB.TheRSBalsohostsanannual pre-Christmas ParliamentaryReceptionwhichwasvirtualthisyear,atwhichtheBTSisrepresented.Therehavebeenother Parliamentary events provided by the RSB and the BTS are represented on these. ``` ``` EUROTOX- as the UK NationalToxicologySociety,the BTS participatesin the AnnualBusinessmeetingof EUROTOXwhichis held attheannualcongress.DespiterecentpoliticalchangesinEurope,linksbetweentheBTSandotherEuropean Toxicology Societiesremainstrongandactive.Alongwithothermembersocieties,theBTScontributesfinanciallytoEUOTOXviaa levy, whichisbasedonthenumberofBTSmembers.ThecurrentpresidentofEUROTOX,ProfessorHeatherWallace,isa former president of the BTS. ``` ``` InternationalUnionofToxicology(IUTOX)-representsmorethan25,000membersandtheBTSisoneofapproximately 60 differentmembersocieties.IUTOXorganisesascientificcongressat3yearlyintervals.Alongwithothermembersocieties, the BTScontributesfinanciallytoIUTOXviaalevy,whichisbasedonthenumberofBTSmembers.TheBTSisrepresented at meetingsoftheIUTOXGeneralAssembly,cannominatecandidatesforappointmenttocommitteesandcanvoteat business meetings. This year the IVTS are supportingthe symposium"In SilicoToxicology- Data,Concepts,and Pitfalls"at this year'sCongress.Dr Martin Clift is the IVTS representative on the Scientific Subcommittee. ``` ``` The BritishSocietyof ToxicologicalPathologists(BSTP)-theBTS workscloselywiththeBSTPandhaveinthepastorganised joint meetings. The Strategy for 2020-2024 has now been published (Strategy-of-the-BTS-2020-2024- 2020). ``` ``` WeinvitedmemberstoobservetheExecutiveCommitteemeetingheldinJune2020whichwasverysuccessful,andwe are hopingtodothesamethisJune.Itwaslovelytosee membersfromdifferentcountriesandbackgroundsjoinusforthe session andthefeedbackwasexcellent.Ithasalsomeantthatmembersweremoreawareofhowbusinessisdoneandforsome has giventhemopportunitiestoapplyformembershipofoursubcommitteesfacilitatedbytheopportunitiesofferedby virtual platforms. ``` ## **`Subcommittees`** ``` Thefourmainsubcommitteeshavebeenveryactiveoverthelastyear,andithasbeena pleasuretobe abletoattendsome of their virtualmeetings to meet with the members and hear what is going on first-hand.More detail of their activitiesis provided in the individual reports but below are some highlights. ``` ``` ThesustainabilityoftheSocietydependsonensuringthatthereisaclearsuccessionplaninplaceandthe Nomination Subcommittee(NSC),chairedbytheImmediatePastPresident,DrChrisPowell,overseesthisactivityonbehalfofthe Executive Committee and we are in a very secure positiongoing forward.There are always opportunitiesfor members to get involvedin the ExecutiveCommittee and Subcommittees.If you are interestedin being a Chair or member please contactbts@execbs.com. My academic colleagues are probably groaning at the thought of a hybrid approach, but this may be the new norm! TheEducation,CareersandTrainingDevelopmentSubcommittee(ECTD),chairedbyDrTinaMehta,wereabletoprovide the ContinuingEducationProgramme(CEP)virtuallyin2020.Thetopic,whichwaswellreceived,was"Chemicalsin the Environment".TheCEPsessionsareavailableasaudiorecordingstoourmembersontheBTSwebsite.ThisyeartheCEPis on a very topical area "COVID-19 repurposing therapies and vaccines: The evolution of rapid toxicological assessment and regulation." I have worked with Liz in my time as both General Secretary andnow President.Liz youhave been a fantasticTreasurerandsupporterof the Societyandmy personalthanksfor the support you have given me. These are available on the public-facing part of the website. https://www.thebts.org/information/policies/. ``` ``` Until2018,the minutesof ourmeetingswere availableonlyto the ExecutiveCommittee,butwe have now made them available in the Members area of the website at http://www.thebts.org/membership/minutes-2/. ``` ## **`Membership`** ``` TheBTSmembershiphasagainincreasedoverthepastyear,asshowninthetablebelow.Atthetimeofwritingthereare 112 memberswhohaveyettorenewtheirmembershipfor2021,asisusualforthistimeofyearandthesearebeingfollowed up. Includedin the 112 are 70 fullmembersandwe hopetheywillalleventuallyrenew.However,theredoesseem to be a trend to decreasingnumbersoffullmembers.ReversingthistrendisoneofthechallengesfacingLisa,ournewmembership facilitator. Financial Performance for 2020` ``` The BTS made a surplus in the region of £18,000 in the year. ``` ``` Asinpreviousyears,theaccountswillundergoanIndependentExaminationbySMHBullockWoodburn(aformof external scrutinyofaccountsspecificallydesignedforcharities)ratherthanafullannualstatutoryaudit,whichsavestheSociety some expenditure compared to a full audit. ``` ## `2. BTS monetary Contribution to Meetings and Events` ``` The BTS Congressplannedfor 2020 was cancelled,and all delegateshave been refundedwith theirregistrationfees, and the BTS received a full refund from the venue in Cardiff. ``` ## `3. Donations to BTS` ``` Despite the pandemic,the BTS were extremely gratefulto receive donationsfrom institutionsand companiesduring2020. A total of £16,500was received,including£2,500towardscongress2021,whichwas fantastic,comparedto £5,000in 2019.I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Society to thank all those institutions and companies who continue to support us. ``` ## `4. Fellowships and Training` ``` The BTS offers a range of travel awards which unfortunatelywe weren't able to fully utilise during2020. However, we did support one of our members to attend a virtualconferencein May. In December anotherBTS member was awardedThe Norman Aldridge Travel Award which will be taken in 2021. ``` ## `6. Membership Subscriptions` ``` The ExecutiveCommitteereviewedthe membershipsfees anddecidedtherewill be no increasein fees in 2022.The exception is a proposed increase in the fee for retired members which will be brought to the 2021 AGM for ratification. ``` ## `7. Accountancy` ``` This is my last AGM as BTS Treasurerafter 5 years in the role.
