Hingham Playing Field Association Annual Report – 2023

The chairperson and committee of Hingham Playing Fields Association are delighted to present our annual report for Hingham town Council and the residents of Hingham.

As we all know, the sports hall itself is a gem of a resource in the town of Hingham, offering much needed sports facilities and activity classes for residents as well as plenty of open space for children and families, a cricket pitch and two football pitches, outdoor gym equipment, a play space, a skateboard park, and a lovely, grassed area for dog walkers.

Inside the building, the spacious hall is marked out for three badminton courts, a basketball court and pickleball courts. Upstairs within the hall there is a large balcony area, offering a meeting room or space suitable for small classes, plus seating areas for spectators. The newly refurbished bar, Abraham’s offer a licensed bar and coffee lounge.

This time last year we were recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, while carefully and optimistically planning a Jubilee Celebration for HM Queen Elizabeth the 2[nd] .

As it turned out, we had beautiful weather and an amazing schedule of events at the Jubilee Celebration. We had a Punch and Judy show, face painting, indoor crafting, baton twirling, archery, live entertainment, a free photo booth and a Hingham’s Got Talent show as well as many other attractions.

Thanks to the sponsorship and generosity of local businesses together with grants and donations, we were able to provide the vast majority of this free or at very low cost.

Sadly, the Queen passed away last year. However, we were fortunate in being part of a town wide Coronation Event which took place in Hingham on the weekend of 6[th] of May to celebrate another historic event, the coronation of King Charles the 3[rd] .

Overall, the HPFA had a very successful year in terms of facilities provided and the number of bookings taken for recreational activities. We had our second Senior Christmas Party – provided free for anyone attending. We have regular events such as a Christmas Fair, craft fairs, car shows, the recent Spring Fling and now a monthly visiting farmers market. Not to mention, the very popular 1940’s weekend due to take place in May.

We provided a warm space throughout the cold winter months and plan to continue offering this facility when the need arises again.

The HPFA is home to a number of successful sports clubs such as Cricket, football, tennis, pickleball, short mat bowls, archery, judo, and badminton. Each of these clubs provide reports for the HPFA.

A Governance sub group has recently been stood up to ensure that we are up to date with our all policies (such as Equality and Safeguarding policies) and processes (such as management of large events on our premises)

Recently we were delighted to welcome Hingham Community Cupboard to our premises in order to further support our families and communities.

Finally, the chair and committee would like to thank everyone who supports and helps with the running of the HPFA in providing these fantastic and popular facilities for our residents, visitors and guests.
