**Rotary Club of Cheam and Sutton Charity Fund Annual Report for Financial Year 2023-2024**

## **1. Basic Details**

Name Rotary Club of Cheam and Sutton Charity Fund

Registration No. 285361

Address 32 Manor Green Road Epsom Surrey KT19 8RA Trustees Mr Stephen Cunningham Mr Alan Lewis Mr Marcel Markan

## **2. Charity Structure**

The Rotary Club of Cheam and Sutton is part of the worldwide organization Rotary International and was formed by the merger of the Rotary Clubs of Sutton and Cheam in July 2016.

The purpose of the club is to provide support to other local, national and international charities and other needy causes. All funds raised for charitable purposes are administered through the charity fund. Donations are only made to charities and other bodies were there is a defined need for funds and where the recipient of the donation is able to demonstrate an audit trail for the monies received.

The club generally support one or two local charities, nominated by that year’s President. The club membership decides on other charitable giving by ballot, each members having one vote.

The trustees of the Charity Fund are the treasurer of the club and two members of the club, elected at the AGM of the club.

## **3. Achievements and Performance**

In this financial year our President’s charities were Sutton Mental Health and Sutton Home Start

We give annually to the Rotary Foundation (the charitable fund of Rotary International) and to Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign and support projects or group aimed at young people including Rotary Kid’s Out, Sutton Young Carer’s Centre, Robin Hood Junior School’s National Science Quiz Team, eight different Scout Troops, Sutton Air Cadets and Sutton Police Cadets.

The club joined in with Rotary Great Britain and Ireland’s and campaign to raise awareness or bipolar disorder and were able to raise funds for Bipolar UK.

We also work with Rotary Club of Caterham and several other Rotary clubs to raise the funds to build a sand dam in Kenya. Sand dams are a cost-effective water management solution, particularly in dryland regions, that capture rainwater during the rainy season and store it in the sand for later use during dry periods. These dams act as an artificial aquifer, providing a reliable water source for drinking, livestock, and irrigation

The club has funded several Water Survival Boxes following the disasters in Morocco and Libya.

Each year the money collected during our Santa Float collections, less our expenses, is distributed equally amongst the organisations invited to collect with us each year on the basis of the number of the collectors provides on a given evening, up to a maximum of 10. This year the money raised was donated to several scout groups across the London Borough of Sutton and in Banstead, Homestart Sutton, Hosanna House, Jigsaw 4U, Robin Hood School PTA, Sutton Air Cadets, Sutton Police Cadets

We also had a stall the Cheam Traders Evening and the money raised plus money donated by members and their families and friends was donated to Crisis and the Salvation Army

Following the passing of two of our members and the wife of one of our members, members made donations in respect of charities nominated by their families. We made donations to RNIB, Alzheimer’s Society, the British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK.

Please see accounts for amounts raised and donated.

## **4. Financial Review including details of the Reserve Policy.**

The Policy of the Rotary Club of Cheam and Sutton is to donate the money is raises within the same financial year, unless the project being funded is to be carried out in the forthcoming year.

At the end of the financial year £11,538 was held in the Rotary Club of Cheam and Sutton Charity Account

The reserves held in respect of the Rotary May Fair (£1,594.88) and the Xmas Float (£225.82) are both being used to pay for the storage of equipment used for both events.

The club runs a Monday Club for elderly people living in the Sutton and Cheam area where they can come and part-take in some light exercise and socialise. The reserves of (£349.81) will be used to fund future events for the group.

We also hold £3,738.51 from a legacy from one of our past members Gerry Nash. We have looked at two or three projects in in his memory, but nothing has come to fruition. We will continue to explore opportunities to do so in the forthcoming Rotary year.

The club holds a charity reserve (£795.33) which allows the club to make donations to worthwhile causes, but is normally used to support charities in areas where there has been a natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or flooding and where there is a need for immediate support for shelters, sanitation and clean water. The reserve (profit) from the 50 Club (£2,188.17) is used in a similar fashion.

The other funds being retained are to be used to fund on-going projects in the forthcoming year(s).
