## **Martyr Worthy Village Hall**

## **Chairman’s Report for the year ended 31 March 2021**

As Chairman of the Management Committee, it is my pleasure to record my report for the year ended 31 March 2021, as presented to the Annual General Meeting of the hall held on Zoom on 11 May 2021.

It had been only just over six months since the hall had held its last AGM, which had been delayed by the restrictions imposed as a result of Covid 19. As reported then, the hall had been open for only a few days between April and September 2020 and since then it had only been possible to open briefly between October and December 2020.

When the hall was open, it was used initially by Riverbank kindergarten, which then closed in July 2020, and subsequently by art and yoga classes, as well as for a few private functions. I am glad to say that, since the year end, these and other users have returned to the hall, including a community café called On the Way which has been operating successfully on a regular basis.

Overall, the challenge has been and will continue to be to promote fuller use of the hall, partly to make up for the loss of the regular income previously provided through the kindergarten and partly, through the hall’s greater availability, through extended use by the wider community.

One of the ways in which it is hoped to do this is through the hall’s new website, which is now up and running at **http://martyrworthyvillagehall.com**

The hall has also installed a WiFi connection at **martyrworthyvllagehall@gmail.com**

The hall has also been taking advantage of the closures to complete a general refurbishment of the premises, including internal and external painting and arranging for the installation of Easigrass on the remaining uncovered areas outside.

To help pay for this work and to make up for the loss of income as a result of Covid, the hall has been fortunate to receive a series of Government Covid grants, which have been available to many village halls and community facilities nationally: these are shown in the accounts for the year. The grants have helped to provide a buffer over what would otherwise have been a difficult time financially.

As reported previously, the hall has also been the fortunate recipient of a legacy of £5,000 from the Estate of Jennifer Ffennell, who until her death in 2019 was always a great supporter of the hall. Part of this has now been spent on acquiring a wooden bench in her memory, which can be seen outside when the hall is in use.

In acting as Chairman, I have been very grateful for the assistance of all members of the hall’s Management Committee as well as the support of its custodian trustees and independent examiner. Without their assistance and support, it would not be possible to maintain the hall as such a useful facility for the benefit of the community.

Guy Green 28th November 2021
