REVIEW OF DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE YEAR
4 COMMENTS
In 2023 we continued to Monitor the artendances al meetings. post pandemic and it eontinues to be low for
some events, particularly the regular monthly evening meetings, although the online presence is still strong and
the BGA continues lo have a global reach. Adions taken for 2024 eveDts that include the introduction of a half-
day mini symposium and &%king the winners of the BGA Medal and BGA C￿e Histories Award to pr¢s¢nt th¢ir
work. This seems to have had a p)sitive efft¢t. We Continue to have good attendan¢es for our presiige events
su¢h as the Rankine L¢¢ture: th¢ John Mitchell L¢cture, th¢ Fleming AW￿￿ the Annual Conference and the
Géole¢hnique Lecture.
The 3rd BGA biennial conference, Geo-Resilience 2023, was held in Cardiff, in March 2023. The ¢onf¢r¢n¢e
attra¢ted 189 participants and 18 SponsOr￿hlb]l0T5. A important focu5 of th¢ ¢onferen¢e pr¢parntion was
¢n¢ouraging the yOUDger members of the profe55ion {early career profe55ionals and Students) to attend, by
offering fre¢ sttLdent places and a significantly reduced r¢gistration rnt¢ for early ¢are¢r professionals.
A presentation at the Annual Conference in June 2023 by Dr Stephen Thomas introduced the "BGA
Geolechnologists Network." This is an iniuative started by past Chair Professor Kelvin Higgins. A
geoiechnologist is a skille4 knowledgeable and practical individwdl. with experience working in ihe Ground
Engineering Industy and is unlikely to be qllalified in the professional Sense, nor following a traditional route
iowards qualificalion. The BGA wanLS to support this group ofpeople be￿use it recognises they h&ve a lot
io contribute io the geotechnical community. li is doing this by organising seminars at times that are tonvenient
for 8eotechnologi5ts to attend (e.8. lunch t1￿¢), on 5ujects tIMt will be of interent to thern, m05t probably of
practical nature a￿d ideally giveTt by geotechnologists for geotechnologists. Meelings were OTgaHised in
September and October, with fitrther events planned for 2024.
The BGA was also pleased io welcome the President of the Iniemational Sociery of Soil Mechanics and
Geotecknical ErLgin¢¢ring (ISSMfjE) Dr. Ballouz to our Annual Conference June. We tha]]k Marc for
making time to address our TnembeT5.
In Sept¢Tnb¢r 2023 the BGA held Tts first annual L¢¢ture and Dinner at The Institution of Civil Engineers. The
l¢¢tllre "The historical underpi]thing of Winchester Cathedral- Eleroic or horrific? It WLS presented by Proft5sor
John Burland of Imp¢rial Colleg¢. 186 F¢ople attended the ledur¢ and 91 people att¢nd¢d the dinner.
At the close of 2023, the BGA had 1294 individual members, including 166 overseas memb¢r5 and 22
s￿dentlyOUng members. There were also 41 Corporate members. including l ovcrscas corpordle member. At
the end of 2tr22 there were 977 individual member5 and 47 Corporate m¢rnbers, 50 the individual membership
of the BOA increased very Signifi￿ntlY through 2023 with a slI￿t d¢￿rase in corporate rnernber5. W¢
continue to reco￿11S¢ the imponance of attracting new, younger members to the BGA and will ¢ontinue our
efforts to engage, encourage and suppon the younger members of our profession.
