The Trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2025.
The Trust also trades under the r>ame St Geor8e's Centre.
The fin3n¢ial statements have been p￿pared in accordance with the accountSn8 polities set out in
Note I to the financial statements and comply with.. the Trust's Declaration of Trust dated 20
November 1981. the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of
Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparin8 their accounts in accordance with the
Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republlc of Ireland IFRS 1021" leffettive I
January 20191.
Objertlves and actlvltles
In setting objertives and planning for attivities, the Trustees have given due consideration to general
guidance published by the Charity Commission relating to public benefit.
I. POUCIES AND OBJEcllvES
The main purpose of the Trust is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for people using the
facilitle5 at the Si George's Centre.
a. To advance the education of the public in the arts and artistic crafts,.
b. to promote any charltable purpose which will encourage the exercise. and maintain the
standards of crafts both ancient and modem, preserve ènd improve craftsmanship and further
promote and increase the interest of the public therein,-
c. to secure for the beneflt of the natlon the preservation, protettion, development and
improvemerlt of features of geological. t￿tanIcal, scientific, historical and archaeological
interest in the Island of Portland-
d. to encourage an understandlng of local heritage and family history;
e. to facilitate opportunities for taking part in healthy Irving and lifestyle for all ages.
Z. AcnvmES FOR ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES
Activities and enga8ement at the St George's centre is considered to be good, wtth use of our facilities
being made by community groups every day of the week. Regular groups using the facilities include
dancing for all age groupstr yoga: seated exercise: 5inging- Brownies: Women's Institute. Royal Manor
Workshops.
Occasional use is also made of both halls by family events. special community events and use by other
charitable organisation5.
The Charity also provides low-rent Studio facilities for local artisans to work in. Currently in residence
there is a world-cla55 ceramiclsgrafitto artist, an encaustic wax irnage maker. a digital creator, a
woodworker and boat-builder. an international film-maker, a yacht ri88er, a print maker and a
silversmith. The Trust maintains a walting list for use of these highly desirable, low cost studio spaces.
Royal Manor Workshops was formed in 1981 to help the Trust in its objectives to keep alive and pa$5
on traditional heritage crafts such as spinnin& weaving and stained glass and other crafts to young
people and adults of all ages and abilities.

The Trust supports the Work of the Portland Local and Famlly History Centre by providing an office
space for archival storage of materia15 relating to the 151e of Portland. The Centre open5 twice a week
throughout the year, except for Bank Holiday5 and over Christmas. and also by special arran8ement.
Four volunteèrs work toward5 collertlng, arthNing and digitisin8 documents. artefacts and other
records with Portland connertion5. In the year. 42 visitors made personal visits to the Centre- in
addition 15 enquiries were made by email. The Centre work5 alongside other organisations, such as
the local museum, the 5t George's Church volunteers and the arts group B-side. The work with B-slde
is an ongoing partnership which brings together artistic endeavour and historic research to promote
the history, culture and general interest of the island.
This work will continue into the coming years.
Some of the work of the Study Centre in 2024125 has been:

restoring and recording the Time Capsule from the Bell Tower:

participation in the Centre's Open Day..
as well a5 numerous individual queries regarding families, graves, houses and other buildings,.
continuing the digitising of records and thè indexing of articles and publications to enable easier
searchin8 of the archive.
The Centre has again received donations connected with island families and places. These a￿ indexed
digitally as far as possible and preserved in the archive for future generations.
Flnanclal revlew
The trust generated a deficit of expenditure over income in the year of £9.681. This is the result of a
purposeful programme of using cash balances for repairs and maintenance to preserve the fabric of
the building. Major items of expenditure in the year included guttering maintenance, repalr and
replacement, repairs to stonework. upgrading the external security lighting and carrying out a new
asbestos survev.
The Trust maintains Sufficient funds to pay liabilitie5 as they fall due and has reserve5 to keep the
centre running for up to one year rf income from artivities is depleted.
We have undertaken some lund-ralsing artivlties thig ¥e3r bLrt or8anisation rèmains a challen8e due
to the limited number of volunteers.
The Trust currently has cash resources of £77,076 la5 at the balance sheet datel- The use of these
resources is malftly reserved for:
A general reserve of approximately l yearfs running COSts1£20.L¥JOI, in rec¢gnition of the risks
of another major incident similar to the COVID 19 pandemlc. in order to protect antl maintain
the Trust in such circumstances,.
Maintaining the buildings and facilities of the St George's Centre. The amount necessary to do
50 is to be determined by an independent survey. carried out by qualified persons. Further

Building Maintenance
The condrtion of the Centre is crucial to its continued income generation. whether from workshop
rental or from regular or casual letting.
A report into the condition of the Centre was commissioned in 2013. Since then, a limited amount of
work has been addressed, due to funding constraints. This is scheduled to be repeated in spring 2025
and it 15 expected that further work on the roots. stonework and windows will be key priorities- all of
which are being looked at. The report will provide a list of priorities and a costed maintenance plan
to work to.
Work has already been commissioned for the most urgent maintenance issues.. the chimney5 are
leaking, which is expected to Cost in the region of £12.OCMJ, but is essential to ensure the building
remains sound. Some of the windows need replacement and listing building consent has now been
obtained.
In addition, modernisation of the heating and plumbing needs to be carried and a redecorative
programme developed to ensure the desirability of the building as a venue for hire.

The Charity is governed by a Declaration of Trust dated 21 November 1981 and is constituted as a
trust.

The management of the Charity is the responsibility of the Trustees who are elected and co-opted
under the terms of the Trust deed. Trustees are appointed via elertion at a Trustees meeting and a

Responsibilities and basis of report
As the Trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in
accordance with the reouirements of the Charities Act 2011 Ithe 2011 Act).

1.1 Account1￿ conventhn
The financial ststements have been prepared in accordance with the Trustee's Declaratlon of Trust
dated 20 November 1981, the Charitles Act 2011. FRS 102 Yhe Financial Reportlng Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Irelan¢f I"FRS102"1 {effective l January 20191. The Trust is
Public Benefit Entity a5 defined by FRS 102. The Trust has taken advantage of the provisions in the
SORP for charlties not to prepare a statement of Cash Flows.
The financial statements have departed from the Chartties (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2[108
only to the extent required to provide a true and fair wew. This departure has involved following the
Statement of Recommended Prartice which is referred to in the Regulations. but which has since been
withdrawn.
The financial statements are prepared In sterlin& which is the funttional turrent of the Trust.
Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.
1.2 Golng corKem
The Trustees have considered the financial position of the Trust and have assessed both financial and
operational rlsk. They are of the opinion that the Trust has sufficient financial reSoUr￿S to contlnue
to operate as a 80ing concern forthe foreseeable future. Accordingly. the TrsJstee5 contlnue to adopt
the going-concem basis in the preparation of the financial statements.
l.a Charitable fu￿1$
General funds are unrestrirted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in
furtherance of their charitable objectives and have not been designated for other purposes.
1.4 Inmlry resourcos
Income is reco8nised when the Trust is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have
been met. ar￿ it is probable that the income will be received.
Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations and Bf3nts are recoenised once the Trust
has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount.
Income tax recoverable in relatlon to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is
recognised at the time of the donation.
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefft
to a third party. it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and
the amount of the obligation can be measured reliablv.
Expenditure is classified by attivity. The costs of each activtty are made up of the total of direct ¢05ts
and shared costs, intluding support Wsts involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs
attributable to a single artivity are allocated to the actimty. Shared costs that contribute to more than
one activity ar)d support costs that are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between
those athivities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
