CHAIR'S REPORT FOR ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMErirs
tt has been another busy year for our charity.
When the financial year began in April 2021. the world was still in thethroes of the Covid-19 pandemic, and though things
settled during the period, it would be hard to say everything 15 once more normal.
Many of our groups have moved back to face tOfa￿ meetings, with suitable care and p￿CaUtiOnS.- others continue online
to respett the needs of those who are not comfortable with indoor events. Our POPL¢lar "Beginning Breastfeedin
antenatal courses continue to be run online. meaning they can reach a wide audiente.
In most ways we remain stable, with our results and financial p05ttion similar to the previou5 year, and our volunteer
numbers similar too. Perhaps what can't be seen in the figures is the ongoin8 extra strain on our people. It is a credit to
our volunteers that we have kept up our offerin8 throughout these difficult times, and the next challenge will be movin8
on Pltrposefully in the new environment, making the best of our resources and ensuring we are an organisation that
embraces the twenty-first century and refiects and supports fulty the mothers and families that we exist for.

otIR AIMS
Our aims are to help mothers to breastfeed through mother-ttrmother support. encoura8ement, information and
education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development
of the baby and the mother. Our aims fully reflect the purposes the charity was set up to further.
OUR OBJEcfivES
Our objectives for the year continued to be the prwsion of information and 5UPPOrt in diverse formats to pregnant and
breastfeeding mothers and their families, and the provision of specialist training to he3lth professionals who work with
brea5tfeeding women.
The strategies employed to achkève the chafiVs objectives are through:

In shaplng our objectives for the year and planning our actiwties, the Trustees have considered the Charity Commission's
guidance on public benefit.
ENSURING OUR WORK DEUVERS OUR AIMS
We review our aims, objectives and artiwties on a ￿￿laT basis. The main objettives for the year ¢ontinued to be the
pro￿s1On of information and support in diverse fom)ats to pregnant and breastfeeding mother5 and their familie5, in
addition to achieving significant cost sawngs and raising money in order to secure our financial future. Thas review look5
at the Success of each activity we have undertaken. and the benefits they have brought to each group. We have referred
to the guidance &￿Ven in the Charity Commission's general guidan￿ on public benefit when reviewing our aims and
objectives, and in planning fvt￿￿ activities. In partiojlar, the Trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to
the aims and activities they have set.

GOVERNING DOCUMETr
La Leche League Great Britain ILLLGBI is an Affiliate of La Leche League International ILLLII, a world-wide not-for-profit
organisation and internatlonally recognised author￿ on breastfeeding. La Leche League GB is registered as a charity with
the Charity Commission and with the OSCR and is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England, incorporated
under the 2006 Companie5 Act. govemed by its Memorandum and Artide5 of Association. dated 9 June 1981 and
amended to allow for current governance arrangements on 23 October 2(￿. 22 November 2(K)8. 12 October 2013, 25
May 2014. 12 October 2014, 10 October 2015. 16 April 2020. The members of the Company are those who have been
accredited by La Leche League International as competent to offer breastfeeding information to the best of their ability
in the advancement of the objeciives of La Leche Leaguè Great Britsin I-L3 Leche League Leaders-l and who have paid
their annual Leader fee. Non-Leader rnembers of the Company may only become votlng members if appointed to serve
on the Council of Director5. There 240 Leader members at 31 March 20221236 Leader-members at 31 March 2021, 240
at 31 March 20201 each of whom agreed to contribute £1 in the event of the charity winding up.
APPOINTMENT OF TRUSTEES
As set out in the ArtÉcle5 of Ass(Kiation, the Chair of theTru5tees is elecled by the Council of Dirertors ItheTrustee board).
Each year, at the Annual General Meèting Iusually held in October) attended by the members of the chBiitable company,
one third lor the nearest number to a third) of Trustees shall retire. but shall be eligible for reelection, subject to
restrictions place(l on the re-election of Departmental Directors. Departmental Directors are Tru5tee5 who have been
elected by the membership to take responsibility for designated areas of the company's business and who may not serve
more than two three-year tem)s in such a position. All voting members are circulated with irwitations prior to the AGM
advising them of the retiring Trustees and requesting them to norninate Tnjstees for election at the AGM. The Trustee
board has the power to co-opt other Trustees during the year. subject to SLtch persons then standing for election at the
next AGM. When considerlng co-opting Trustees. the board has rwrd to the requirement for3ny specialist skills needed.
TRUSTEE INDucfioN ANDTRAINING
NewTrusrees receive an orientation pack Irevised and updated as necessary) to brief them on their legal obligation5 under
charity and company law. a copy of the Memoondum and Articles of Association, the charity's policies and procedures,
the department structure and decision-makinE procesw, the recent finanaal statement5 of the charity and the current
strategic plan. Opportunities are given to new Trustees to meet key employees and other Trustees. Trustees are
encouraged to attend approprtate external training even￿ Whe￿ these will facilitate the undertaking of their role.
ORGANISAnoN
The Council of Directors. which administer5 the charity. can have up to 13 members (the majority ol whom must be
appointed from amongst the Leader-members of the company). In normal times. the Council meets three times a year-
in eX￿ptIOnal p8ndemic-related cirojmstsnces this is replaced with more regular and shorter online meetings, reflecting
current difficulties in arr8n8ing travel and managing risk.
The Trustees manage the d3y-ttrd8y opeFations of the charity. To facilitate effertive operations, authority is delegated to
staff and volunteers, within terms of delegation approved by the Trustees. for operational matter5 including finance.

RISK MANAGEMENT
Risks facingthe organisation are reassessed on an ongoing basis and plans put in pla￿ to mitigate them, wlth these plans

much efficiency. particularly in the way we process memberships. In additK)n to annual memberships we now offer
monthly memberships payable by direct debit. The new website has further increased effioency of administration.

been mitlEated by Cost containment and improved trdding cond¥tions as detailed in this report.

discussions ak)out LLLI'S management and details of bylaws and other revisions, considering the efferts on LLLGB of
decisions taken internation31ty. and ensuring that GB Leaders have th￿r voices heard at the highest level. This include5
having a guaranteed GB Leader seat on the LLU Board.
Risks associated wlth lack of general funds from membershlps and donations: some fundraising has been undertaken,
Including online donations and entouragin8 membership. The charity is increasingly workin8 on obtaining grant funding
for specific tailored projects and the provision of CPD to our volunteer Leaders. through local and national grants which
can also be used to support local LLL Groups with the costs of running meetings. In times of economit pressure across
Great Britain. the chaflty cannot place significant reliance on income from donations. so one focus is on managing costs
to ensure that our committed costs are not high. and that spending decisions and plans are based on available funds not
on expectation of future income.
Rlsks relatlng to compItan￿ wrth laws and regulation& LLLGB needs to ensure ￿MplIan￿ with both company law and
charity law and guidance, with the risks of non-c0rnpl1an￿ being both reputation31 and finanual. These risk5 are managed
by ensuring the trustee body includes those with knowledge and experience of relevant regulation5 and supportlnE
trvstee5 and our Company Secretary in attending training where appropriate. We take legal and professional advice
where ￿e￿Ssary, iecognising this as part of our trustee responsibility.
Rlsks rèlatSn8 to the SAR&COV1tr19 pandemic". The efferts of the pandemic on the chariws operations were
widespread, as ot)e of thè core pieces of our work has alway5 been providing face to face support.
Breastfeeding support is helped by close physical proxrmity. Our guidelines for Leaders runnirhg face to face meetin8s or
providing individual in-person supp)rt have continually tracked the changinB regulations in each relevant part of Great
Britain, alway5 asking Leaders to ensure they cornpiy with the law and are mÉndful of individual and group risks.
As we move into the p05t-pandemic period there a￿ risks assooated with rtropenin8 Rroups and we encourage our
volunteer5 only to provide services wtth which they are comfortable. This is balanced with the need to show we are still
present and lo maintsin our reputation a5 Providers of uniquely supportive arKI welcoming groups.

Mother-to-mother support - We support mothers. parents, and families through LLLGB Local Groups, our telephone
helpline. online helpforms. online that faoltty. website and a range of social media channels.
Volunteer support- The process to become accrediteil as an LLL Leader may take months or years and applicants are
supported thTOUEhoutthe pr(￿e$S by their I(￿1 Leaders and a remotesupporter_ Oncè actredited. Leaders are supported
by a locally based District Co-ordinator and our Leader Department Director.. there are also significant levels of informèl
mutual support.
INFORMATION
We share brea5tfeeding information throuÈh our paper publications, website. professional liaison, public relations, and
trading subsidiary LLL (Books) Limtted. We are also èctively pursuing closer cooperation wlth other breastfeeding support
organisations in the UK.
EDLICATION and DEVELOPMEKr
Our Education and Development Department run a programme of antenatal breastfeed4n8 courses. whith in the curieni
financial year have all been provided online under the title of "Beginning Breastfeed$n￿. This Innovative olferin&
provided at no charge to families, has contributed 5ignificantty to our reputation and to wide awareness of the Support
we offer, and 86 instances of the course ran in the financial year.
ADMINIStRATION and FINANCE
Our only paid staff ale our part-time Operation Manager and bookkeeper. Further information on our financial position
is sèt out in the Finance Directorfs report.

LLLGB hès been working to raise awareness of who we a￿ afid what we do at both a local and a GB level. We aim to
increase awareness and accessibility of our G&wide provision of breastfeeding support at our LLL8roups and by Leaders
in their communities. We have continue(I to explore and expand our social media presence as a way of reaching new and
existing audiences, and of raising the profile antl awareness of LLLGB in general.

The social media team ctrordinates posts, meme5. and information sharing via Facèbool Twitter. Instagram and
YouTube. We promote the information available on our websttè, raise awareness of the presence of LLLGB groups across
the country. and encourage membership and donation5. We also aim to encourage interaction and peer support and
encouragement across our Channels.

La Leche League GB has reteived numerous media enquiries in the last year asking for our response to various news
stories about breastfeedin& LLL Leader5 have taken part in several radio discussion5 on local radio and national media,
and TV interviews. LLLGB has been quoted in articSe5 on the national print media. as well as online media channels.

Leader Acryeditation Department (LAD)
The Leader AccrediLition Department continves to work to secure the fvtUTe of LLLGB by working with Leader
Applicants. This year there have conttnued to be many thanges to LLLI documents and procedures requirlng us
to continually update our GB documentation and keep up wth the global changes.
Eleven Co-ordsnators of Leader Accreditation in Great Btitain land four ACL4-at-large helping from abroadl are
5UPPOrting 102 Leader Applicants. LLLGB accredited 27 new
Leaders in the last year- some who had only ever attended LLL meetings remotety through the pandemic.
The iAD department reS￿ndS to those interested in leadership via ourwebsite, Sometimes leading to
applications.
LLLG8 has accepted 40 new applications in 2021-2022 most of them supported by Leaders In a group. Our
LLLGB Applicants Facebook group remains active.
Internationally, LAD is involved in twi￿ monthty meetlngs with the LAD council and with the LLLI Board.
Sharing their views on policy changes at Board level to ensure decisions are relevant to our work here in GB.
We continue to be represented at every international LAD meetin8 and participate in many discussions online.
Scottlsh Government 8reastfeedlng Programme for Government 2018-2022
In 2021-2022 La Leche League GB received aft additional fourth year of funding from the Scottish Government for two
projects." LLL Group Development in Scotland. and Peer Support Training with Breastfeeding LENS Ltd.
Since April 2021 La Leche League groups rn Scotland have continued to offer support by phone and online lone-to-one
and meetings). and as of June 2021, in-person meetings. Scottish Government funding continues to be used to secure
venues for fa¢e-to-face meetings. c￿erall meeting frequency across Scotland has increased considerably as Covid
restrictions have allowed. The Be8innin8 Breastfeeding Online course continues to be offered by Leaders in Scotland.
Since April 2021 this course was led by Leaders Scotland 23 times and has reached approximately 20 families each
month.
This reporting period saw us continue o*Jr CPD for La Lethe League Leaders and applicants. Scottish Government
funding supported thèm to attend the LLLI conference online in October 2021. ILL Groups in Scotland held an in-person
and online Scottish Spring Workshop in Glasgow, funded by the Scottish Government grant. The funding enabled us to
choose a highly accessible venue and redeem Iravel and wotkshop expenses to volunteers. This event was held entirely
online in 2020 and 2021.
The Peer Support Project with Breastfeeding LENS trains lo¢al mothers to 5UPPOrt each other and promote breastfeeding
in an area in East Lothian with low breasrfeeding rate5. This year they increased the nutnber of group5 meeting each week
and the number of tfained peer supporters. Enrichment artNities for volunteer peer supporters Incltsded a talk by Prof
Helen Ball frorn BASIS and an in-person infomiation event.

Annual data show bTeastFeeding rates increased over the past year. Project oversiRht is provided by Brea5tteeding LENS
in cooperation with LLLGB.
With these projects LLLGB aims to contribute to the Scottb5h Government's objective of reducing the breastfeeding
attrition rate at the 6-8 week infant review.
LLL In Scotland is also proud to continue to be a part of thÈ Scottish Government Breastfeeding Advocacy Advisory
Group. Key work this year includes-.
-the development of breastfeeding education to be included in the Scottish nation31 ajrriajlum from nursery to
secondary school education
-the development of national guidelines for breastfeedin8 peer support volunteers
-a national map of all breastteeding groups by location in Scotland. and all businesse5 s￿￿ed up to the Breasrfeeding
Friendly Scotland scheme
-a collaboration with Healthcare Without Harm Europe on BrÈastteedin8 and Climate Change

Breastfeedin8 Matters, LLLGB'S bi-monthly newsletter. is produce(I by a team of dedicated Leaders and is a terrlflc
resource for our members who can choose to re￿1Ve wt in paper form or elertronically. It is full of informatlon and
wonderful stories shared by mothers and families. which provide encouragement and tips for breastfeeding parents
finding themselves in similar situations.
B￿astfeedIng Matters artldes are often referred to by our breastteeding counsellors during our locAI group meetings,
whether in person or online, and they can be a useful resoLtrce to promote LLLGB membership. Breastfeeding Matters is
read around the world, although its circulation is especially wide across Britain. Ireland and Fran￿. Articles of particular
interest are also made available on the LLLGB website, makin8 Breastfeeding Matters, reach truly global.
Leader and Leader Appliont resource {previ￿￿1V known as"FeedbacYI
LLLGB is in the process of creating a new resource for Leaders and Leader Applicants to rèplace the previous onlinè
repository (known as Feedbackl. The purpose of thi5 resource is:
l. To provide information on LLLGB activities such as natlonal and local workshop sessions. to help our
breastfeeding counsellors stay up to date.
2. To allow LLLGB Leaders and Leader Applicants to more easily share documents which will be valuable
resources for other Leaders and Leader Applicants. e.8. meeting plans.
3. To increase collaboration and community iY)nding amongst Leaders and Leader Applicants, e.8. "Meet a
Leaderf articles.
LLLGB publishes over fifty different information sheets and booklets. These are for sale in the LLLGB Shop as single copies
and bulk pads and packs, and are popular with parents. Leaders. breastfeeding supporters and health professionals in the
UK and beyond. The text of many leafiets can also be read on the LLLGB website.
Our Positioning (Jnd Attachment leaflet is available for sale in Kindle fom)at. Also available is the popular Full Somple
Set of all LLLGB published leaflets. along wtth a Complete Reference Sec comprising the contents of the Full Sample
Set, ready filed for easy refèrence. Parents attending LLLGB Beginning Breastfeeding Antenatal Courses receive 3 pack of
5pe¢ially selected leaflets as part of their course. LLL Ireland purchase and sell our leaflets and LLL New Zealand continue
to print many of our titles under licence.
Leaflets are written and updated on a rolling basi5 by the Leafiets Coordinator, worklng closely with other Leaders who
act as editorial consultants, proof re3ders and reviewers. coordinated using a Facebook group.

visitors.
Our 20 most p)pular pages were viewed 2.2m times: these included our pages on Sleepy Baby- What and what to do,
Too much milk and Oversupp￿ as well as our information on managing engorgement, information on thrush, and our
page on alcohol and breasrfeeding.
80% of our visitors arefrom the UK or United States. and the rest of our reach isgeographically verywide, with visits from
all over the world.
Keeping the breastfeeding information on our website up to date and accurate is an ongoing priority for the web51te
team, ahead even of generating new content. We continue to monttor our use of images and language to ensure thev
represent the full diverse range of families we support.
Behind the scene5. we contlnue to develop our websit&b35ed resources for our Leaders 50 they can record their work
securely online which also rmprove5 our internal record keeping. In the 2021-22 year we fully refreshed the area of our
website for Leader use, reduang as far as p055ible the administratlve difficulties arising from the necessary record-
keeping that is part of our volunteers, res￿nsibIlIties.

Further into the coronavirus pandemic we found our overall sales again redU￿d with a totsl turnover for 2021-22 of
£14,27512020-21 £19,416). We were concerned we might not break even. However lower costs of 8enerating sales and
stock re*valuation following resolution of our diffitulties with the Mlfilment company has enabled us to Gift Aid a
surplus of £2,796 to LLLG8 (paid during the 2022-23 taxyearl. Sale5 during earlysummerwere rnostly for books. However,
from September 2021 face-to-face support groups began resumirbg 3nd orders of LLLGB leaflets from Leaders and
breastteeding supporters increased and tontinued through to the end of the financi31 year.
We did not attend any in-person events, leading to a Signfficant sawng in costs. However we promoted the LLLGB Shop
at online events including LLLI. LCGB and ABM tonferences and workshops, offering items for their prize draws and
discount codes.
We keep a close eye on pricing and make adjustments (both up and downl when necessary. but remain committed to
offering a good deal on our products any time a customer needs to order. In 2021-22 the Womanly Art of Breastfeedrn
Sweet Sleep and Adventures in Tandem Nursing wefe our top selling books. Our leafiets Sample Set and Complete
Reference Sets both also sold well.
We use a self*mployed book-keeper. The remaining admin tasks are shared on a voluntary basis betrleen the three
Company directors working from home. More Leader volunteers are rtreeded urgently to join thi5 team in order to keep
the shop running smoothly and ensure it can remain viableforthefuture. Companydirectors Sue Vpstone, Kate Wootton-
Beard and Heather Birt would like to thank Sally Harris, Suzanne Cohen and Ellie Moriarty for their ongoing contributions

Is in Subscriptions of various form5 (around £40.960 th￿ yeafl. Despite the economic effects of Covid-19 and furlough,
we have been Brateful to receive a very similar rate of subscriptions to that of last year, and this has allowed our Leaders
to fund new and innowdtive ways of stjpporting families.
The expected Gift Aid daim for 2021-22 is £2m. down from last yearfs £4C()9. We are planning to empha5ise the
importance of choosing to give us Gift Aid. which doesn't cost any extra to our donors and subscribers.
The accounts show total incoming resources for the year of £128.669 whith is up from the 2021 figure of £115,738. This
Increase is in line wtth an increase in ouigoings1£78.350 to £96.6731, as costs of providing servi￿5 went up as expected
a5 we restarteil providing fa￿ to face helping. Our reserves are still robust. and we will use OUT surplus as needed to
support a full return to face to fa￿ work alongside a continued virtual offering wherever possible.
Donations have fallen this year. which reflects the continuin8 lower numbers of group meetings with potential for cash
donations. In time5 gf widespread economic difficulty. it may also be more dwfFicult for families to spare cash for
donations.
We are. as always, grateful for the support of the various local fijnders and for grants to gmups 8s well as donations from
individuals. We are also very grateful for those people who felt able to make a Contribution to our work, large or small,
and to those volunteers who have invested time and energy in obtsining grant funding to 5UPPOrt thelr work.
During the year LLLGB'S balan￿ sheet included £94.145 cash held by groups. This amount increased from last year, with
local groups only starting to offer face to face support and outgoing fvnds to hire venue5 or share physical resources wlth
attendees have not been back yet to prtrpandemic levels.
La Lethe League Great Britain will aim to maintain reserve5 in order to provide continuity of Servi￿ provislon.
Unrestricted funds will be held in reserve for amounts of up to six months annual running costs to provide for any
unexpected shortfall in fundin& The current level of feserves is consldered adequate.
The balance of restrirted funds represents the unspent portion of the amount re￿iVed from funders which 15 specifically
earmarked for the completion of fund projerts. As was the case last year. these funds may take longer than expected to
clear due to the venue restrittions from Covid-19 management. and $0 may remain in our account for longer than
originally planne(l. but will be redirected or reserved tor completion of these projects as soon as circumstances allow.

other costs, which are attributable to more than one activity. are apportioned across cost ￿tegOrieS on the basis of an
estimate of the proportion of time spenl on those activ¥tie5.
Charitable activities include expenditure aswciate(I wlth the provision of Informatlon. advice and support. and include
both the direct costs and sUPPOrt costs relating to these actiwties.
Governance costs include those incurred in the governan￿ of thecharity and its assets and are primarily associated with

FIXED ASSErs
Fixed assets are included in the balance sheet at cost less acujmulated depreciation. Depreciation is provided to write
off the cost of fixed assets over their estimated useful life of four years on a straight-line bèsis. Assets costing under £50
are not nomially ￿pItalIsed.

Stock5 are value(l at the lower of cost and net realisable value. It is not possible to value the goods that are donated to
