Bergmann Fund sU￿COMMittee which awards grants to support young
recorder players. Othèr key activities, such as workshops, and the
SRPIMoeck Solo Recorder Competition, are managed by individual

Branches jointly organise the Society's annual Festival.

such as recorder orchestras and bands,
' The actlvitles of the Sodety carry only a sllght rlsk of major unexpected
expenses, adequately covered by the reserves and insurance. The
Society has Public Liability, Employerfs Llability, Professional Indemnty
and Trustee Insurance.

Ob"ectives and activities
The objects of the Society shall be the education of the public in the study,
practice and appreciation of the art of music and the allied arts and in
particular (without prejudice to the generalty of the foregoing) the
promotion of the education of the public in the study, practice and
appr￿lation of the recorder and its repertolre.

Any person who agrees to abide by the Rule5 and pays the annual
subscription to th8 Society nationally (£25.00 individuals, £37.50
households and £10 for those in full-time education, plus a sum to cover
the costs of any local Branch(8s) theyjoin, may become a member and
attend Branch and Soclety meetings. Each Branch is entitled to a
subsidi$ed visit. sometimes called a Pastoral Vislt, each yéar by a
conductor from the Society's Panel of Conductors. Each member receive$
the quarterly publlcation The Recorder Magazine, which includ88 some
pages of Society news. Visltors are wel¢ome at Branch meetings.
The Society organlsas and subsidi888 training workshops in topics such
a$ baroque music and dance, conductlng, technlque, theory and unbarred
music. Attendance is open to all. members or non-members, for a fee of
£15 for most workshops, and £17 for the Advanced Conducting Workshop.
Facfrt¢>face workshops run for a mlnlmum of 5 hrs Contact time. On-line
workshops were introduced during the pandemic, and remain avallable at
£3.00 p8r hour, per particlpant.

' Th8 Sodety'8 Walter Bergmann Fund, named after one of tt8 founders,
awards grants to young people under the age of 30, born or studying in the
UK and Ireland, to support their development as recorder players.
These grants can be for the purchase of instruments. lessons, attendance
at courses, entry lo competftions, edurAtional activity promoting recorder
playing etc., and are available lo qualifying groups as well as individual8.
Awards ar8 subject to applicanls providing evidence of flnancial need.
The Philip Cole Bursary, named after a member, Is avallable to b8 used
for workshops in schools, or travel of pr2&winner8 to the SRPIMoack
competition's final recltal, on the recommendatlon of the WBF commlttee.

these would further the objects of the Society.
The Socw organlses and 3ubsidises a bienniol international solo
recorder playing comp8tition for young players at the London International
Festival of Early Music, with support from Moe¢k. The competition is held
in odd-numbered years. with the winner giving a public recital the following
year.
Each year one or more Branches of the Society host a national we8kend
F8Stival. In most years Ihere is also a one4ay Scottlsh Festival. These
Festivals are open to everyone. whether Society members or not, and
include Conducted recorder playing sessions, recitsls, workshops and
other a¢tivities. Instrument and music shops attend to enable participants
to see and buy items to enhance their playing.

' The Society centrally commissions new music for recorder consorts and
ensembles. The organisers of each national Festival also commission a
ple￿, often with a local theme, for first performance at the Festival, with
Coples for Branches and affiliated Orchestras for ftjrther practice and
performance. Branches may also commission new music for special
events, such a$ anniversary meetings.
' When appointed, Trustees, attention Is drawn to the guldance issued by
the Charity Commission. Including that on their roles and responsibilities.

Achievements and performance
The Society continued to promote the recorder as a serious instrument,
to encourage the raising of standards, and to provide opportunities for
learning and playing by members and non-members. through Branch
meelings, Playlng Days and Workshops.

durlng the year
The Conference and SRP National Festival were held in Edinburgh in
April 2023. 28 branch delegates attended the Conference, w￿h 12
offi¢ial$.
The Edinburgh Festival attratjed 182 players across the weekend, wlth
playing se8sions18d by 18 conductors from across the country, covering
a wide range of music, and two massed playing sessions for all
participants.
. Two composers based in Scotland were commi88loned by th8 Festival
¢ommfttee to writ8 new music for the occasion. 'Journey to Skye. was
composed by Anne Martin for the opening massed playing session, and
this also provided parts for 22 participating local schoolchildren. Another
place was composed by Marg Hall for the occasion, and her 'Three
Sketches of Scotland" were played during the weekend. Copies of these
F8Stlval pieces were made available to all branches and afflliated groups.
' An additional, dedicated playlng sesslon was arranged for the
Schoolchildren involved in the openlng session.
' The playing sesslons were followed by an evenlng ¢on¢ert by
Spinacino, a broken consort of lute, recorder, viol, violin and soprano,
entilled Songs of Love and Loss from Renalssance Scotland and Europe.
' In 2022-23 most branches V￿re able to meet up regularfy,. soma meèt
monthly, others more often.
' Brancj) members have continued to benefit from the extra Pastor81
Visitor sessions offered by the Tru8tee8, replacing opportunltles m188ed
during the years of the pandemic.
Eight Face to Face workshops were held be￿een 1 •t Sept 2022 and
31" Aug 2023, on thè topics of- All That Jazz121, 20th Century Music (2),
Gabrieli121, Crossing Boundaries (1) and Conducting Level 1.
Varlous recorders belonglng to the Society continue to be on long-terni
loan to the National Youth Recorder Orchestras (charty 1153705) for the
use of participants In thelr tralning courses.
In addltion, the Society awarded a grant of £3,000 to NYRO to support
its activities in 2022-23, a 21st annivetsary year. During the year the
Trustees approved a further grant of £3,000 for the coming year, split as
£1,500 initially, plus a further £1.500.
Charfotte Schneider, winner of the 2021 SRPIMoeck Solo Recorder
Playing Competition, gave her recital at the London International Festival
of Early Music at Blackheath, London in November 2022. The
Competition and biennial recital are organised by the competitlon
administrator, on behaw of the Society, and sponsored jointly with Moeck
and the Early Music Shop.

Achievements and performance
' Three finalists have been selected to take part in the 2023
SRPIMoeck Solo Recorder Playing Competition, competing for the
opportunty to play In a solo recital in November 2024.
' Th8 Socl8ty's Walter Bergmann Fund continued to glve grants to
support young recorder players in financial need lo purchase
instruments, attend courses etc. Most recipients were teenage or college
students needing to buy decent instruments for their studies. The FurKI
has also provided funds from the Philip Cole Bursary for workshops in
schools, and for assisting wtth travel expenses for a group to tak8 part in
competition. Many members and norFmembers contributed Cash,
Instruments or mu81¢ to support the Fund.
. The Society recelve8 a share of the 88le$ Income and the Performlng
Rights fees for muslc computer set from bequèathed arrangements.
. Thè Socl8ty'8 publlc website at continues to be a
comprehensive source of infomation about thè Society, its Branches and
activities, and about the recorder and its music in g6neral. It includes a
catalogue of music held by some Branches to facilitate sharing. It also
includes extensive lists or links to detalls of ¢oncerts, workshop$, playing
days, supplSers, Items for sale and wanted, etc of potential interest to
members and non-members.
. An 818ctmnlc newsletter Is produced monthly by a volunteer, on behalf
of the Society, and is circulated to anyone who signs up lo recelve tt.
The Soclety operate8 under the ConstitLrtlon and Rule$ adopted by
Conference In August 2020, whl¢h were presented to the charity
regulators. These new arrangements reduced the number of Truste8S,
with addltlon81 re8pon8ibilities carried out by named post holders.
Conference 2023 approved an addltional element to be added to the
Constltutlon, wlth effect from 31 March 2023, to fomially allow on-llne
electronic meetings, when necessary.

Section E
Financial review
The Society's Central Fund maintains reserves equal to at least the
annual turnover. The Arthur Ingram Fund is used for activities in support of
the Society's charitable objectives. The Wafter Bergmann Fund, which is
restricted fund, awards grants to support young players up to age 30. The
awarding of grants from the latter Funds will always be subjed to the
availability of funds.

' The Soriety's main income derives from member8, subscriptions to the
Central Fund plus subscriptions levled by each local Branch to support Its
activities.

which was distributed between the Walter Bergmann Fund, the
conductors, the organislng branch and the Central Fund.
The SRPIMoeck Solo Recorder Competitlon Recltal took place In
Novemb8r 2022, wfth associated costs.
' The accounts refiect the result for the year and Show a reductlon in
re88rve8 a8 events Postponed durlng the pandemic can now take place.
' The Arthur Ingram FurKI was founded by a18ga¢y and recelve8 the Glft
Ald payments from HMRC that the Sociely's claims on members,
subscriptions to the Central Fund. General donations lo the SRP are
allocated to Ihe Arthur Ingram Fund to ensure spending on charitable
activlties such as training workshops, the SRPIMoeck competlllon, general
grant giving and fundlng for commlssioned mu81c.
' The Walter Bergmann Fund Is supported by donations of cash,
instruments and muslc and by the Gift Ald payments from HMRC that the
Society claims on qualifyin9 donations.
