The trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2022.

Reference and administrative information set out on page 1 forms part of this report.

Objectives and activities

Reference and Administrative Information

The British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis began operating in 1981. Most of the charity's activities are undertaken in the United Kingdom.

The Board and Senior executives of the charity are listed on page 1. Professor Neil Morgan is the trustee to whom day-to-day management of the charity is delegated by the Trustees in 2021.

Objectives and Activities

Objectives

The objectives of this Society are the advancement of public education and the promotion of those branches of medical science concerned with haemostasis and thrombosis. In furtherance of these objectives the Society holds meetings at which members of the Society and their guests present and discuss their work. A website (www.BSHT.org.UK) is available to provide information, but from time to time, the Society also produces a newsletter for its membership.

The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities.

Achievements and performance

The charity's main activities and who it tries to help are described below. All its charitable activities focus on the promotion of medical science in the field of Haemostasis and Thrombosis and are undertaken to further British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis’s charitable purposes for the public benefit.

Travel Grants

Travel grants are available to enable investigators to visit laboratories at home or abroad (or for foreign scientists to visit members' laboratories) to gain experience in another area of haemostasis science. Payments are for travel and subsistence. Applicants do not need to be a member of the Society but they must be sponsored by a member.

In 2022, 3 separate travel applications were made from members and awarded amounting to £1,516.

Congress Bursaries

In 2022, numerous bursaries were offered or awarded for national and international meetings.

The BSHT annual meeting was held as an in person meeting once again, in Aberdeen 26 – 28 January 2022. Bursaries/prizes were given to 5 x ‘Scientist in Training’ Speakers, totalling £1000.

The now annual ISTH meeting took place in London (9 – 13 July 2022) where the society supported 17 ECRs to attend the event totalling £14,500.

BSHT Undergraduate Programme

BSHT aims to attract young scientists into the field of haemostasis and thrombosis. This year 4 student awards were given alongside laboratory consumables totalling £5,700.

MacFarlane Biggs Lecture

The society annually supports the MacFarlane Biggs Lecture, held by the British Society for Haematology, which was supported by £560 of BSHT Charity funds.

Educational Subcommittee Grants

The Society encourages educational meetings on specialist topics to which members of the Society are invited.

Achievements and Performance

The Society aims to spend its income from investments, as well as income from Gift Aid from its subsidiary, BSHT Meetings Ltd, after subtraction of administrative costs, on education and research. The expenditure plans follow a two-year cycle, since the charity feels that a significant part of the income should be used to support members and those just entering our field of science in attending the main scientific meeting in our field (the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis), which is annual. General charitable expenditure is monitored twice each year at committee meetings, where the Treasurer provides updates on the amount of income that has been spent or allocated for education and research.

Financial review

During the year, the total cash funds decreased from £46,362 to £41,543. However, there was a net unrestricted unrealised investment loss of £49,850 (2021: gains of £23,736).

The Trustees confirm that the investments held by the Society have been acquired in accordance with

the powers available to the Trustees.

The level of free reserves (that is, those funds not tied up in fixed assets and restricted funds) that the charity holds at 31 December 2022 is £41,543 (2021: £46,362).

Reserves policy

The Trustees do not have a formal Reserves Policy.

Plans for the future

The future plans for BSHT include continuing commitment to education in areas of Haemostasis and Thrombosis. Plans for holding educational seminars for junior doctors and scientists will be explored as will other means for encouraging recruitment to careers in this area. With the continued success of the Undergraduate Programme there is the intention to continue with this scheme.

Research will be supported by the provision of travel grants and congress bursaries and opportunities for more substantial support for research posts will be sought. The Society is committed to supporting our membership for future international meetings which we hope will become in person as the pandemic improves.

The Society will continue to develop links with other bodies sharing similar interest with a view to more collaboration.

Structure, governance and management

The organisation is an unincorporated charity, registered as a charity on 9 April 1981 in England and Wales.

The charity is constituted under a trust deed dated 9 March 1981. The trustees are members of the charity but this entitles them only to voting rights. The trustees have no beneficial interest in the charity. The power of appointing Trustees is vested in the President.

All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the charity. Any expenses reclaimed from the charity are set out in note 5 to the accounts.

Governance

The finances of the organisation are subject to regular review by the BSHT committee on behalf of the members of the organisation. All commitments are agreed by the committee and are included in the published annual report. All transactions are approved by at least two of four signatories.

Management

The Society is managed by the Executive comprising the President, President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer. The BSHT Committee is responsible for reviewing all aspects of the activities of the organisation and all major commitments require the formal approval of the committee.

Risk Management

The Trustees confirm that they have identified and reviewed the major risks to which the charity is exposed and have established systems to mitigate those risks.

Independent examiner’s report

to the trustees of

British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31[st] December 2021 which are set out on pages 6 to 7.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
