## **CHAIRMAN'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR TO 31ST JULY 2025**
THE FRIENDS OF ST MARY'S is a Registered Charity No 281982 and is formally constituted by Deed of Trust dated 18th June 1979, although the Friends, as an organisation was founded at a meeting in Ealing Town Hall on 26th September 1976
The Charity Trustees during the year to 31st July 2024 were: Mr Andrew Goodhart (Chairman), Dr Hugh Mather, Rev Valerie Aitken, Mr John Newbwgin and Mr John Biggs (Clerk).
## **Objectives and Organisation**
The object of the Charity is to preserve this Grade I Listed Church "as a building of historic and architectural interest" and we are pemitted, under the redundancy measures "to arrange, organise,and conduct such charitable activities (whether or not of a religious nature) at the said church as is authorised by the 99 year lease, granted on 19th June 1979 by the London Diocesan Fund on behalf of the Church Commissioners at a nominal rent of £250p.a." This rental is however waived annually, provided that the cost of all repairs and maintenance exceeds this sum, which has been the case since the commencement of the lease 44 years ago. There has never been a demand for rent and the "rent review" in June 2009 was not exercised. A few years ago, representatives of the London Diocesan Committee visited this and other redundant churches in Middlesex and were delighted with the condition of the church and the improved facilities that the Friends have provided, and continue to provide over the years.
## **Chairman's Report by Andrew Goodhart**
The Chairman's report for the Trustees whose purpose, under the Deed of Trust, is to have the ultimate responsibility for the use and maintenance of the church and churchyard in accordance with the terms of the lease. The Charity Commissioners have recently confirmed that the Trust Deed is the official over-riding document which describes the responsibilities of the Trustees in respect of the church and the churchyard, including burial arrangements.
The Trustees have noted with appreciation all the hard work that has been carried out during the year, both inside and outside the church building, by the excellent team of volunteers. It is good to have Hugh Mather (Chairman of the Executive Committee) as a Trustee, as he is the prime mover of everything connected with the day-to-day running of St Mary's Perivale. The Executive Chairman's Report therefore gives a more detailed report of the activities for the year.The continuance of concerts is particularly important to the life of St Mary's Perivale, as are the benefits to the musicians who are very keen to play. A major item during the year has been the continuous live-streaming of the concerts on a worldwide basis, and we continue to upgrade the recording and sound equipment, and are benefitting from the new fibre link for our transmissions, now without problems and the addition of new cameras, all now High Definition.
The church is being kept in fine condition and, with forward planning, we are able to cover all foreseeable eventualities. The church tower has had rotten timbers replaced as well as repairs to the kitchen roof, and the notice board has been refurbishedand has lights. The team of gardeners continue to keep the churchyard in an excellent condition.

## **CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR TO 31ST JULY 2025**
**Introduction:** This has been another successful year. After the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, we reopened again to a live audience in September 2021. Since then we have adopted a ‘hybrid’ concert model, serving both our small audience in the church and a much larger number of participants watching our broadcasts online. This has proved to be very successful and bodes well for the future. We have become, in effect, a much-respected broadcasting venue for superb solo and chamber music concerts, enjoyed by hundreds of classical music lovers throughout the UK and abroad. This astonishing development has been based on the remarkable video system installed by Simon Shute and his colleagues, to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude.
**Broadcast concerts:** From September 2024 to July 2025 we held 115 concerts. We paid a total of over £40,000 to our musicians. All this has been achieved without any grant or external support, and run entirely by our team of unpaid volunteers. I would like to pay special tribute to our technical team who made all this possible, led by Simon Shute, and comprising George Auckland, Andrew Whadcoat, Rob Jenkins, John Naulls, Peter Sandison and Roger Nellist. I am also very grateful to Roger Nellist for helping me to run the organization, and to Andrew Goodhart, Chairman of the Trustrees for handling the donations and Gift Aid. The concerts have received about 100,000 views on YpuTube during the year, in around 70 countries, and were attended by an average of 40 people in the church, with attendances varying from 20 to 90, and viewed concurrently by 35 to 80 people. We have held a total of 1,579 concerts since 2004. The church is still consecrated, and we hold a Harvest Festival and Carol Service every year..
**Our finances:** These will be considered in more detail in the report by our Treasurer, Richard Norris. We markedly increased our payments to musicians at the start of the year, but despite this, we have recorded a surplus of over £25,000 in this financial year, and we have reserves of around £240,000. These are needed to protect against future expenditure on our medieval Grade I listed church. I would like like to record our thanks to Richard Norris for handling our finances in his usual expert fashion.
**Video-recording facilities:** The quality, stability and reliability of our v=broadcastsis now stunning, and of professional qiuality. We are deeply indebted to our technical team led by Simon Shute, for their expertiseand hard work in this considerable achievenent. We now broadcast to Facebook as wekll as YouTube, thanks to the expert input of George Auckland.
**Improvements to the Churchyard:** The churchyard is in good condition, thanks to the efforts of our flourishing gardening team under the direction of David Brown. We are fortunate tin having such a dedicated group of talented individuals, with a considerable range of skills, to assist in the maintenance and improvement of the churchyard.
**Publicity:** Our thrice weekly email newsletter is sent to over 1500 email addresses and remains our core advertising tool. Eight years ago we launched a major and successful ‘social media’ initiative on Facebook, with a ‘page’ for St Mary’s Perivale administered by Roger Nellist. We are grateful for the input of Gill Rowley in producing posters for our renovated noticeboard and advertisements for Ealing Arts Diary.
**Use of the church by other musical organisations:** We have accommodated many local music organisations, including Ealing Chamber Music Club, Ealing Flute Group, Ealing Music Festival, West Londion Sinfonia, Ealing Symphony Orchestra and Ealing Youth Orchestra. We are proud that our building has been used to benefit all ages and standards of music-making in Ealing.
**Plans for the Autumn:** We plan to continue with about 100 concerts per year, streaming all except those given by our local amateur orchestras, and there is a long waiting list for musicians. The details of forthcomng concerts are on our website.

**Summary:** We have consolidated our position as the most active broadcasting venue in the UK, particularly for piano and chamber music recitals. Our ‘hybrid’ model means that we still provide concerts for our local music-lovers, while also broadcasting the concerts throughout the world. We have established St Mary’s Perivale as the premier venue for instrumental and chamber music in West London and consolidated our finances. We continue to maintain our beautiful church and churchyard in pristine condition. With the valued support of our members and other core supporters, we are ensuring that our ancient church is preserved for future generations to enjoy
**Acknowledgements:** Our continued success during the past year is a magnificent team effort by everyone involved at St Mary’s and I am indebted to so many people for all their help. I would like to pay special tribute to Roger Nellist, our Vice-Chairman, for his huge input into all aspects of our organization; to Simon Shute for leading our technical team and developing our amazing video facilities; to George Auckland, Andrew Whadcoat, Rob Jenkins, John Naulls and Roger Nellist for their massive contribution to the recordings; to George Auckland additionally for developing and funding our website; to Sherry White, Gill Rowley and Felicity Mather for running the ‘box office’; to Andrew Goodhart for handling the donations via our website and Gift Aid system; to Richard Norris as Treasurer for his masterly handling of our finances;; to Gill Rowley for her work as Membership Secretary; to Judith Price for cleaning the church; to Sherry White for acting as church ‘caretaker’; to Gill Rowley for much help with publicity; to David Brown and everyone in the gardening team, to Dermot Doughty for his research into the history of the church and management of the historical archives, to Rob Jenkins and Mike Pearce for organising the jazz events: to John Newbegin for advice on varous legal issues. and to everyone on the Executive Committee for being part of such a remarkably harmonious and effective group. ## **HON TREASURER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR TO 31ST JULY 2025**
Attached are an Income & Expenditure Account for the year ended 31st July 2025, together with a Balance Sheet prepared as at that date.
We are very pleased to report once again that the organisation is in a strong financial position. A successful year's activities has been further augmented by much appreciated donations.
## **Balance Sheet**
The Friends have net tangible assets of £256,420 which is an increase of £27.679 during the financial year; this includes an increase of £641 in the value of the holding of COIF Investment Fund, now valued at £53,555. More than three quarters of the Friends reserves are held in cash at the present time, which is now attracting a more realistic rate interest and in the short term at least has been considered to be the safest harbour for the money.
The present deposits are under review to obtain the best return within the conservative policy which we have always adopted, and will continue to maintain
## **Income & Expenditure Account**
As explained in the CEO's report, the Friends has continued to provide live concerts, which are broadcast on our live-streaming system. Audiences have continued to respond very positively to this, and requests to listeners for donations to help pay the players have been very generously supported. As a result of this, concert income, at £54,908 , has been maintained, and is further augmented by Gift Aid.
During the year, there were no major repair projects on the building but we have renovated benches in the churchyard, and continue to ugrade our live streaming facility.
Aside from concerts, the subscription income has been maintained at a high level, and we have received some very generous donations with particular mention of £4,000 from John Runge, and £1,000 each from PR Taylor, John Lowe and Mendl Sharma. Routine overheads for keeping the building and churchyard well maintained have generally been held or marginally reduced, but there have been significant increases in two aspects. as mentuioned in the CEO' report we have increased the payments to players hence the overall cost has increased by £4,800, and the cost of insurance has increased by £3,000 since we increased the sum assured to £1,6m; piano costs have also increased due to an overhaul of the piano which cost £3,500.
## **General**
The surplus on the Income and Expenditure Account for the year is £27,533, which is a reflection on the generosity of those who have supported the organisation during the year, and made possible by the expertise and dedication of the live-streaming team who have created the facility.

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31st July 2025 which are set out on the attached pages.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
As the Charity's Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts, and you consider that the audit requirements of Section 43 (2) of the Charities Act 1993 ("the Act") do not apply. It is thus my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under Section 43 (7)(b) of the Act, where particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of the Independent Examiner's Report**
My examinations were carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity, and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required of an audit, and consequently I do not present an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
## **Independent Examiner's Statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
a) to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 41 of the Act, and
b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act
have not been met.
The Trust, in common with others of a similar size and organisation, received income which cannot be fully controlled until it is entered in the accounting records and is therefore not capable of independent verification.
No matter has come to my attention in connection with my examination to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to make a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached
