Dear Members,

I am pleased to present the 46th Annual Report of the Sree Narayana Guru Mission (Mission) of the UK for the financial year ending 31[st] December 2024. On behalf of the Executive Committee (EC), I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all members for entrusting both myself and the EC with the responsibility of overseeing the management of the charity throughout 2024.

The current elected EC members took the responsibility on 1[st] November 2024. A good teamwork within the existing committee was maintained.

The EC continued to run our Education Centre, providing affordable supplementary education to the community. The education centre operates solely on voluntary service, with a few dedicated volunteers who consistently work hard to recruit students and manage the administration of the centre. While managing both students and teachers presents its own set of challenges due to limited manpower, these volunteers remain committed to ensuring the centre’s success. Their tireless efforts in canvassing for students and their strong teamwork deserve immense appreciation. Despite the many hardships, this dedicated team has succeeded in turning the education centre into a surplus venture. This achievement aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Guru, who emphasized that true progress comes through education and that knowledge is meant to be shared.

In addition to our ongoing weekly Exercise classes for the elderly, which continue with the support of Newham Council, we are pleased to announce the introduction of new classes aimed at promoting health and wellness. Twice a month, we now offer Yoga, Meditation, and Zumba classes for women of all ages. These classes are designed to foster well-being and encourage greater participation from women across the community.

Furthermore, our Yoga classes at Southall remain a key offering and continue to attract regular attendance, supporting the physical and mental well-being of our members

The Wildflower Project was successfully completed following a one-year extension granted at no additional cost. An interpretation board bearing SNGM details has been installed in the park. Mission played a pivotal role in project management, while most tasks were executed by the Parks Team of the London Borough of Newham (LBN). In collaboration with LBN, Mission was responsible for the joint design and creation of the meadows, as well as the coordination of various activities. However, Mission was

unable to coordinate one public engagement day due to insufficient public liability insurance (due to restrictions of our current insurance). For its project management services, Mission received a fee of £2,410 and we returned £1,968 of unspent funds to the council. Future seed sowing efforts to ensure the meadows reach full bloom will be undertaken by the Parks Team.

Study Class with Swami Tyageeswaran

Swami Tyageeswaran of the Narayana Gurukula, Varkala has been conducting online classes on the study of Darsanamala on Saturday mornings with active participation from Canada, Germany, North India, Kerala, Singapore as well as from a number of locations in and around London. Students regularly look forward to each week’s ‘Darsanamala’. This is Narayana Guru’s final work dedicated in Sanskrit and consists of 10 Darsans. Each Darsan is a unique vision with 10 verses each. All 10 Darsans comes together to create a garland of visions. Each week one verse is considered. The commentaries of the successive Gurus: Nataraja Guru, Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati and Guru Muni Narayana Prasad in English and Malayalam have been invaluable in preparing for the commentary that Swami Tyageeswaran gives at the start of each class. Swami’s words are always inspirational. Every class member has an opportunity to say what they understand and ask for clarifications. In this way, each week the class lasts for around 2 to 2.5 hours. The Darsanamala study class ended middle of December 2024. This was a vast subject and one round of study gave a basic understanding - such is the depth of Guru’s words. In 2025 we have embarked on the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ and the class size has increased. It is proving to be fun, informational, inspirational and invaluable as the previous studies.

An unprecedented event

The Mission unfortunately experienced a Burglary at our office during the evening of February 13th and the early hours of February 14th, 2024. The thieves gained access to the ground floor by forcibly removing the rear security door, along with the steel door frame. During the break-in, significant damage was evident to cabinets that were forcibly opened in their search for valuables.

Regrettably, the thieves managed to steal the donation box (Undiyal) from the Pooja room, along with its contents. Fortunately, nothing else was taken. Our insurance company has since replaced the steel security door.

We are thankful that no one was harmed during this incident and only suffered minimal financial loss. Although there was cosmetic damage to the rear foyer, the rest of the building, including the Pooja room, remained untampered. In light of this breach, all Mission activities had to be temporarily suspended until the security measures were fully restored.

The Executive Committee would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all our members for their understanding and support during these unprecedented and challenging times. Your patience and solidarity have been invaluable as we worked to restore security and continue with our community activities.

Guru Dharma – The monthly pooja at the East Ham centre continued, led by Mr. Suresh Kumar Gangadharan, Mr. Arun Peethambaran, and Mr. Giridharan Vidhyadharan.

The Croydon Centre

The Pooja at the Croydon Centre is held daily at 6:30 PM, with the second Sunday of each month being designated for the sponsored Pooja. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Shaji Vasudevan and his family for their selfless commitment to conducting both the daily and special poojas at the centre. Their generous donations of fresh flowers and garlands have been a great support in maintaining the sanctity and beauty of our rituals.

Mr. Vasudevan's unwavering dedication to the activities of the Croydon Centre is truly invaluable, and we are fortunate to have such a devoted member who consistently contributes to the success of our community.

In addition to the pooja services, the Croydon Centre hosts Yoga, Violin, and Malayalam classes every Sunday. Special thanks goes to Fiona Wong , our yoga instructor, for her generous contribution in teaching these classes free of charge. Her selfless service continues to enrich the lives of many participants.

Southall Centre

We would like to thank Biji Shaji, Sujatha Manilal, Reena Raghavan and Prabha Thankaraj for their ongoing support and volunteering with food donations, decorations and flower garland making. Many thanks to prayer singers Reena Raghavan, and Bindu Sajeev who continue to show their devotion through chanting prayers, which is a wonderful part of our Guru pooja. We are immensely grateful to Mr G Sureshkumar, who has shown great support in attendance to the Southall Centre, and has engaged in giving philosophical talks, and singing.

The Southall Centre are hugely appreciative for Mrs Shobha Ashok, who has shown her passion for yoga, healthy lifestyle and mental wellbeing support through yoga demonstrations, and interactive sessions at our Southall centre.

Membership- I would like to thank Mr PV Vijayan for stepping in as Ex-Officio and leading the membership sub-committee following the sudden resignation of the elected membership secretary in March 2024. A new strategic plan was put in place, with the approval of AGM-24, to establish a regular communication with all active members of SMGM-UK. This is to improve relationship with them and to bring in the younger generation having innovative ideas to be more involved with Mission activities.

The plan for implementation also gives members to closely work with the Executive Committee, to strengthen our organisation, to smoothly run operational activities, as well as to achieve our constitutional objectives and goals.

Guru Jayanthi Celebration

Sree Narayana Guru’s 170th birthday was celebrated by the charity successfully on Saturday 7[th] September 2024. Back in January 2024, the Executive Committee made a firm decision to book a large hall externally to celebrate Gurudevan’s auspicious birthday on a larger scale than in recent years. Planning amongst a few key officials and members began soon after that, with school halls and town halls in both East Ham, Ilford, and Barking being visited for suitability assessments. Weekly planning meetings started in the first week of March and continued till September. This proved to be very useful for the Guru Jayanthi Committee (GJC) team, to track steady progress and as critical issues, especially ones financially related, were resolved efficiently after detailed discussions. As door-to-door fundraising was a key task for the event, membership team played a key part in the management of membership list updates and fund collections.

By the end of May, the team confirmed the venue to be Eastbury School Hall in Barking. A draft of the event programme, together with a budget not exceeding £10.5k was then presented by the team to the EC for approval and dedicated fund collections started around the beginning of June, giving us ample period to contact and meet our members and sponsors. A steering committee was set up to contact potential new sponsors, explore new income streams and efforts ran parallel to the normal membership reliant fundraising activities. Results surpassed original targets as can be evidenced in the accounts.

The 7-hour programme of high-quality entertainments, with a detailed time-lined schedule, started at 3:00 pm with prayer. The stage setting included LED Wall which maximised advertising opportunities as well as dynamic backdrops to compliment the Drama and other programmes. At the peak of the programme, the large hall was full of over 350 audiences. Readers are advised to view the recorded programme, now available on SNGM- UK’s YouTube channel. sheets at the end of this AGM report, the programme, enjoyed by all who attended, was completed well within budget.

I also take this opportunity to thank our major sponsor ‘Swayam Properties’ for their support in making the GJC celebration a success. Mrs Sheeba Anil was very supportive in designing and printing the flyer for us. We also would like to thank the family me mbers who sponsored ‘In loving memory’ to remember their loved ones.

OnaSadya at mission centre was 22[nd] September. The food was catered by Adukkala Catering service. Every dish was cooked to perfection and in an authentic way. Everyone gave positive feedback regarding the food and the homely ambience that the EC members and volunteers provided.

Croydon OnaSadya was held on 31st August in KCWA Trust hall. We managed to serve more than 180 people. Thanks to Mr Shaji Vasudevan for his catering services. We would also like to thank Ashok Raghunathan (Family Choice) for sponsoring the banana leaves and bananas.

East Ham Children's party We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs Leena Salim for her assistance in organising the Children’s Christmas Party at East ham centre. We had hired professional entertainer for 2 hrs to entertain the kids. We had an overwhelming number of kids who attended the Christmas party. Some of the parents also stayed behind to help out. Mrs Leena Salim organised the games, the gift bags and food. We appreciate her exceptional skills in dealing with kids of all ages.

Croydon Children's Christmas party was held at St Saviours Church on 21st December free of charge. The event was a success, children and parents enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Ashok Raghunathan for sponsoring snacks, drinks, plates and cutlery and thank you to all the supporters and donations.

Mr. Damodaran Prakash, and Mr. Satheesh Kumar for their invaluable contributions in sound and lighting, as well as other backstage technical support essential to the success of the events.

– Building & Maintenance We are also planning to install security camera and alarm system very soon. The mission building also requires further maintenance to the structure which we are looking to subject to sponsors.

Our deep gratitude goes to Mr. Sabulal Bahuleyan ‘Thalam Property & Financial Services’ for his support and for offering the premises at a discounted rental rate for our Croydon centre.

We would also like to express our gratitude to Mr. Sreekumar ‘Anand Media’ for providing IPTV services with Malayalam channels for both our centres in East Ham and Croydon.

Editorial- The Mission's Facebook page is consistently updated with information about mission events and other appropriate news. This is also reflected on our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook page.

Finance – Our Education centre is running successfully and is one of the ways of generating revenue for the service we provide. Zumba class is also another source of a small income. We are also trying to get income from hall rental. Newham council released a part of the Wildflower meadows project grant which was used for carrying out the project

Women’s Forum – With the support of Newham Council, we have successfully recommenced our exercise sessions at our centre for this year. I would like to thank Miss Sheila, exercise instructor for her continuous support. We have also commenced Zumba classes by Mrs Archa Raj Raju on Sundays and yoga classes by Mrs Shobha Ashok. We also would like to thank Mrs Bindhu Sajan for conducting mediation classes via online zoom session.

Women’s wing organised a day trip to Kew Gardens on 10[th] August. The event was sponsored by the president Mr Suresh Dharmarajan, in loving memory of his parents Mr V Dharmarajan & Mrs N Saraswathy. 120 entry tickets were all used and everyone loved the day event. The group wanted SNGM to organise more day trips similar to this.

Our special gratitude is extended to Mr Valsamma Thankappan, who joined the EC in an ex- officio capacity, providing advisory guidance to the women’s forum .

Obituary

It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that we announce the sad loss of our beloved members during 2023. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones. Our prayers are with the departed souls, that they may rest in eternal peace.

പ്രളവരിച്ചു . അെത്തുെെന്ന സമയത , വിലരിെിപുള്ള വസ്തുക്കൾക്കായി തിരയുന്നതിനികെ ബലമായി തുറന്ന ൊബിനറ്റുെൾക ൊരയമായ ളെെുരാെുെൾ സംഭവിച്ചു . ദുുഃഖ്െരകമന്നു രറയകട് , രൂജാമുറിയിൽ നിന ഉണ്ടിയലും അതികല രണവും്‌ ളമാഷ്ടിച്ചു . ഭാഗയവരാൽ , മകറ്റാന്നും അവർ കൊണ്ടുളരായില്ല . അതിനുളരഷം ഞങ്ങേുകെ ഇൻഷുറൻസ് െമ്പനി വഴി സ്റ്റീൽ സുരക്ഷാ വാതിൽ മാറ്റിസ്ഥാരിച്ചു .

ക്റുട്ടിക്റളുലെ പ്ക്റിസ്മസ് രാർട്ടി സംഘെിപിക്കുന്നതിൽ സഹായിച്ചതിന് പ്രീമതി ലീന സലിമിളനാെ് ഞങ്ങേുകെ ആത്മാർത്ഥമായ നന്ദി അറിയിക്കുന്നു . െുട്ിെകേ രസിപിക്കാൻ ഞങ്ങൾ 2 മണിക്കൂർ കപ്രാഫഷണൽ എന്റർകെയനകറ നിയമിച്ചിരുന്നു . പ്െിസ്മസ് രാർട്ിയിൽ രകങ്കെുത്ത ധ്ാരാേം െുട്ിെേുണ്ടായിരുന്നു . ചില മാതാരിതാക്കേും സഹായിക്കാൻ അവികെ തകന്ന നിന്നു . മിസിസ് ലീന സലിം കഗയിമുെൾ , സമ്മാന ബാഗുെൾ , ഭക്ഷണം എന്നിവ സംഘെിപിച്ചു . എല്ലാ പ്രായത്തിലുമുള്ള െുട്ിെേുമായി ഇെകരെുന്നതിൽ അവരുകെ അസാധ്ാരണമായ െഴിവുെകേ ഞങ്ങൾ അഭിനന്ദിക്കുന്നു .

ഓഗസ 10- ന് വനിതാ വിഭാഗം െയൂ ഗാർഡൻസിളലക ഒരു ദിവസകത്ത യാപ്ത സംഘെിപിച്ചു . മാതാരിതാക്കേുകെ ( മിസ്റ്റർ വി ധ്ർമ്മരാജനും മിസ്സിസ് എൻ സരസവതിയും) സ്ളനഹസ്മരണയ്ക്കായി പ്രസിഡന്റ് പ്രീ സുളരഷ്

ധ്ർമ്മരാജനാണ് രരിരാെിയുകെ സ്ളരാൺസർ . 120 എൻപ്െി െിക്കറ്റുെൾ എല്ലാവരും ഉരളയാഗിച്ചു , എല്ലാവർക്കും ആ ദിവസകത്ത രരിരാെി ഇഷ്ടകപട്ു . ഇതുളരാലുള്ള െൂെുതൽ ളഡ പ്െിപുെൾ എസ്എൻജിഎം സംഘെിപിക്കണകമന പ്ഗൂപ് ആപ്ഗഹിച്ചു .

വനിതാ ളഫാറത്തിന് ഉരളദരെ മാർഗ്ഗനിർളേരം നൽെികക്കാണ എക - ഒഫീളഷയാ രദവിയിൽ EC യിൽ ളചർന്ന പ്രീ വൽസമ്മ തങ്കപന് ഞങ്ങേുകെ പ്രളതയെ നന്ദി അറിയിക്കുന്നു .

2024- ൽ ലമ്മ വിട്ടുപരായവർ 2023- ൽ ഞങ്ങേുകെ പ്രിയകപട് അംഗങ്ങേുകെ ദുുഃഖ്െരമായ ളവർരാെ് വേകര ഹൃദയഭാരളത്താെും അഗാധ്മായ ളഖ്ദളത്താെും െൂെി അറിയിക്കുന്നു . അവരുകെ െുെുംബങ്ങൾക്കും പ്രിയകപട്വർക്കും ഞങ്ങേുകെ ഹൃദയംഗമമായ അനുളരാചനം അറിയിക്കുന്നു . രളരതരുകെ ആത്മാക്കൾക നിതയരാതി ലഭിക്കാൻ ഞങ്ങേുകെ പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു .

In preparing the accounts the Executive committee and Treasurer are required to comply with the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities SORP 2015 issued in October 2014

The members of SNGM have a designated Treasurer for the SNGM. The responsibility of the Treasurer is, including responsibility for the propriety and regularity of the finances for which the Treasurer is answerable, for keeping proper records and for safeguarding the SNGM’s assets.

Accounting policies of SNGM

1. Accounting basis.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of certain fixed assets, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective January 2015). The statements have also been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities SORP 2015 issued in October 2014

2. Land and buildings

The Trustees hold title to the land and buildings used by the SNGM. As required by FRS102, existing buildings and their associated land used for fundraising, administration or accommodation purposes were valued and capitalised on the Balance Sheet at 31 December 2021 (Note 17). Subsequent additions are included initially at cost.

3. Depreciation

Capital items costing more than £500 are capitalised as fixed assets. Depreciation is provided on all fixed assets, at rates calculated to write off the cost or valuation, less estimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected useful life.

10. Reserves

Reserves are analysed under the headings Unrestricted, and Restricted funds

11. Restricted funds

These are funds which have been given to SNGM for specific purposes by donors

.

A full year depreciation is charged in the year of disposal and none in the year of acquisition. The carrying value of tangible fixed assets is reviewed for impairment when events and or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.

4. Intangible fixed assets

There are no intangible assets held by SNGM.

5. Cash Flow Statement

The executive committee has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No 1 (revised) from including a cash flow statement in the financial statements on the basis that the charity is small.

6. Income

Income is recognised in the period to which it relates, unless specified otherwise by the funder.

Project funding is, in general, repayable if not expended within the relevant project. Such income is only recognised to the extent that it ceases to be repayable. The income is accounted for on an accrual basis.

7. Resource Expended

Resources expended are included in the Statement of Financial Activities inclusive of VAT which cannot be recovered. Charitable expenditure includes the direct costs of the activities. Where such costs relate to more than one functional cost category, they have been apportioned in line with the direct costs of the relevant service.

8. Taxation

Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK is a registered charity and is not liable for corporation tax on its income under section 505 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988 to the extent that it is applied to its charitable activities.

12. Fixed asset reserve

The Fixed asset reserve absorbs the timing differences arising from the different arrangements for accounting for the consumption of non-current assets and for financing the acquisition, construction or enhancement of those assets for the provision of services. The Account is debited with the cost of acquisition, construction or enhancement as depreciation, impairment losses and amortisations are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities.

13. General reserves

The Executive Committee, with the approval of the members may undertake certain activities the proceeds from which, together with donations and funds from other sources, are taken to the General Reserves. These funds may be used at the Executive Committee’s discretion.

14. Restricted reserves (earmarked)

This sets out the amounts set aside from the General Fund balances in earmarked reserves restricted to provide financing for future expenditure plans

Croydon Building Fund : A reserve created out of donations received from members and other well-wishers to support the purchase of a centre in Croydon for Sree Narayana Guru Mission. Use of this reserve is restricted for the purchase of new centre with the approval of the Executive Committee.

Education Services reserve : A reserve has been created for providing educational services and the balance on this reserve is accumulated from previous years. This reserve is restricted to support running education services for the community.

Capital Receipts reserve : A reserve has been set aside for any major works for Sree Narayana Guru Mission’s fixed assets mainly

accumulated from member’s monthly contributions.

Building fund reserve : Reserve is set aside for the use of further expansion to current land & buildings.

Disaster Aid reserve : Set aside to support people suffering from natural disasters or other types of emergencies. The funds will be released to deserving cases subject to review and approval by the executive committee.
