## **Annual Report 2023** 

## Dear Members 

I am delighted to present the 45th annual report of the Sree Narayana Guru Mission (Mission) of the UK for the financial year ending on December 31, 2023. On behalf of the elected executive committee, I extend my gratitude to all members for entrusting both myself and the Executive Committee (EC) with the responsibility of overseeing the management of the Charity throughout 2023. 

The current elected EC members took the responsibility on 01 October 2023. This is the first time a female member has taken the General Secretary (GS) role. The EC can also boast more female members to support the committee this year than ever before. A good teamwork within the existing committee was maintained. I sincerely hope I can inspire other women to become General Secretaries. 

The EC continued to run our Education Centre providing subsidised supplementary education to the community. After lengthy deliberations in the EC over the dwindling surpluses, an overhaul of the service was carried out and subsequently, the EC decided to continue the service with regular monitoring for any adverse trends. We presented cash prize to Shreya Roy for achieving top grades for GCSE. 

In addition to our regular exercise classes, we started Yoga and Zumba classes for women of all ages twice a month. The regular weekly Exercise classes for the elderly continues with the support of Newham council. Yoga classes at Southall also continues to be run. 

Guruprabha’s Thiruvathira team won the runner up trophy in the London Kalabhavan Thiruvathira competition. This is a significant achievement considering that they had participants from all over UK. 

We also conducted a felicitation for Mr Manambur Suresh (life member and ex EC official) for the release of his book “Ray to London Festival” 

Pooja rituals that take place in the Guru pooja room can now be viewed on monitors installed in the hall downstairs. This is useful for people who find it difficult to make their way to the pooja room and also if the pooja room is filled to capacity.

The committee organised a pilgrimage to Skanda Vale temple in Wales. Skanda Vale represents no single culture or faith but stands for the universal human values of Sathya (truth), Dharma (right conduct), Shanti (peace), Prema (love) and Ahimsa (nonviolence), a very fitting set of values for Sree Narayana Guru devotees. The trip was a grand success in spite of the bad weather. We are still getting enquiries to organise another trip to the same destination this year as well. 

One of the major events that we organised this year was the “Gurukulam Centenary” Celebration. Thie event was led by our Gurudharma subcommittee. 

Our Wildflower Project that we undertook in partnership with the Newham council and the Green Street Community Neighbourhood was successful. We have managed to create an area for Wildflower within Priory Park with a signboard with SNGM emblem which will be seen by community for generations.  The area has also been partitioned off as we requested to help wildflowers to thrive. 

We thank Dr Sarasan once again for all his hard work in securing the funding and of course the Newham council and the councillors who helped with the project administration for SNGM. 

We also introduced a “Going Green strategy”. In keeping with Guru’s principles, we embraced the change by reducing carbon emission and waste to create a better environment. Dr. Hena Vijayan, Dr. Nethaji, Mr.Arjun Divakaran and Mr Sanal Madhavan took the initiative to give talks on the impact of climate change to the members. As a result, we have installed Water filter to avoid buying bottled drinking water and started using reusable plates and cups instead of plastic. 

We also introduced a new concept of Preloved Item Sale. Members generously donated to the event including clothes, electronics, plants etc. The money raised was donated to the mission fund. In the same event we also introduced Card Payment (wireless) which was well received by all as it made payments and donation transactions quick and easy. 

We organised a Food tasting Event, early this year where people brought their vegetarian food for the competition. We had savoury and sweet categories. The markings were done by the two popular Chefs, namely Mr Shibu Kumar and Mr Santhosh. The audience also had a chance to taste the food and give their scoring. I take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners and thank all the participants and audience for making this event a success. I would like to thank Dr Henna, and Mr Jaison for supporting the Food tasting event. 

**Gurudharma** – One of the major events that we organised this year was the “Gurukulam Centenary” Celebration. As part of the SNGM celebration of the Narayana Gurukula Centenary, we decided to exhibit Andrew Larkin’s 100 illuminations of

Atmopadesashatakam. This was inspired by the exhibition held during the annual Guru Puja in August 2023, at the Island Gurukula Aranya, Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA where one hundred illustrations were individually pinned to a white backing board to highlight each illumination with minimal distraction. Each image is symbolic of the four lines Narayana Guru devoted to each verse. It aptly serves as a focus for meditation. We decided to reproduce that here in London, on the stage at the Guru Mission Hall. This entailed some logistics and presentation. 

Additionally, to support the centenary, we put up maps of Narayana Gurukula locations in Kerala and around the world.  A timeline of significant milestones of the 100 years of the Narayana Gurukula and the SNGM was put up on the portrait screen. 

A book stall with a selection of Narayana Gurukula books in English and Malayalam. 100 AS illuminations artist: Andrew Larkin, Portland, Oregon, USA (follower of Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati from a very early age). We like to thank the following members and volunteers for their contributions.

News of the exhibition inspired Dieter Balkenborg from Exeter to visit specifically. Indeed, the exhibition inspired many fun conversations on Atmopadesashatakam during the preparations and during the very special day. Beyond, it inspired a new AS class which meets every Thursday evenings to read the commentaries and to discuss them including the illustration for each verse. That class continues to this day and is expected to take 4 years to complete all 100 verses.  Beyond that, the exhibition was impressive enough that it inspired Narayana Gurukula in Varkala to exhibit the 100 AS illuminations during the Narayana Gurukula Convention held in December 2023. The books remaining from the bookstall are stacked into a dedicated shelf within the Guru Mission library. A photograph of Nataraja Guru, the founder of the Narayana Gurukula was installed high up within the same room. A room dedicated to the wisdom of Narayana Guru. 

I would like to reflect on our GDP study group activities with Guru and Swamis from Narayana Gurukulam, Varkala. Following a visit by Swamy Thanmaya of Narayana Gurukula to the SNGM in September 2014, weekly study classes have been held with members of the organisation and beyond. In October 2018, following Swamy Tyageeswaran’s visit another weekly study class was started on ‘Atmopadesa

Satakam’. The class has also been studying Darsanamala for over two years and is due for completion in October 2024. These study classes have given us all an opportunity to be exposed to the wisdom of Narayana Guru. A wisdom that served well during Guru’s life in Kerala and continues to serve us well wherever we may live today. 

The monthly pooja at the East Ham centre continued, led by Mr. Suresh Kumar Gangadharan, Mr. Arun Peethambaran, and Mr. Giridharan Vidhyadharan. Vijayadashami Pooja was celebrated on October 24th at East Ham and Croydon Centre. We thank all the sponsors of the Pooja as all our centres including, monthly pooja and other special pooja events, for their long-standing contribution and support.

The Croydon Centre Pooja is open at 6:30pm every day. Mr. Vasudevan's unwavering dedication to the Croydon Centre's activities continues to be an invaluable contribution, and we are truly fortunate to have such a devoted member among us. The **Southall Centre Pooja** is held once every 3 months, and our appreciation goes to Mr. Manilal Sivanandan. We would like to thank Biji Shaji, Sujatha Manilal, Reena Raghavan and Prabha Thankaraj for their ongoing support and volunteering with food, donations, decorations and flower garland. Our appreciation also goes to prayer reciters Reena Raghavan, and Bindu Sajeev who continues to show their devotion through chanting prayers, at the Guru Pooja. The Southall Centre are hugely grateful to Mrs Shobha Ashok, who has shown her passion for yoga, healthy lifestyle and mental wellbeing support through yoga demonstrations, and interactive sessions at our Southall centre. We would also like to thank all our members for their donations, and dedication. It has been heart-warming for our community to come together and support one another.

**Membership-** Unfortunately, the membership secretary Mr Sreekumar Bhaskaran stepped down from the executive committee due to personal reasons. Mr Vijayan Pattathil, who joined the EC in an ex-officio capacity has been supporting the EC with the membership activities. We are very grateful for his input. 

**Social & Arts** -I would like to extend my appreciation to all the artists who have continuously supported and contributed to all our stage shows.  We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs Leena Salim for her assistance in organising the children’s Christmas Party at East ham centre. Mrs Leena Salim organises the games, the gift bags and food. She has exceptional skills in dealing with kids of all ages. 

Onasadya at mission centre was held on 3[rd] September. The food was prepared by Mrs Sivasailaja Dharmaseelan. She did a tremendous job by making sure every dish was cooked to perfection and in authentic way. 

Sadya was served to 150 people this year at Croydon Centre. We would like to extend our thanks to Mr Ashok Raghunathan for his support. (Family Choice Croydon). Children's Christmas party 2023 held at Croydon Mission Centre, was a successful event and free to attend. We also had Christmas celebration at our centre with variety of stage performances from different community.

Mr. Damodaran Prakash, and Mr. Satheesh Kumar for their invaluable contributions in sound and lighting, as well as other backstage technical support essential to the success of the events. 

**Building & Maintenance** –We are planning to install security camera and alarm system to the premises very soon. The mission building also requires further maintenance to the structure for which we are seeking potential sponsors. Our deep gratitude goes to Mr. Sabulal Bahuleyan (Thalam Property Services) for his continued support and for renting the Croydon centre premises at a discounted rate. We would also like to express our gratitude to Mr. Sreekumar (Anand Media) for providing IPTV services with Malayalam channels for both our centres in East Ham and Croydon. 

**Editorial-** The Mission's Facebook page is consistently updated with information about mission events and other appropriate news. This is also reflected on our Instagram and Twitter page. 

**Finance** – Our Education centre is running successfully and is one of the ways of generating revenue for the services we provide. Zumba class is also another source of small income. We are also trying to generate income from hall rental. Newham council released a part of the Wildflower meadows project grant which was used for carrying out the project 

**Women’s Forum** – With the support of Newham Council, we have successfully recommenced our exercise sessions at our centre for this year. I would like to thank Ms Sheila, the exercise instructor for her continuous support. We have also commenced Zumba classes by Mrs Archa Raj Raju on Sundays and yoga classes by Mrs Shobha Ashok. Women’s wing organised a pilgrimage trip to Skanda Vale temple for which we received positive feedback. 

Our special gratitude is extended to Mrs Valsamma Thankappan, who joined the EC in an ex-officio capacity, providing advisory guidance to the women’s forum

## **Accounting policies of SNGM** 

## **1. Accounting basis.** 

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of certain fixed assets, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective January 2015). The statements have also been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities SORP 2015 issued in October 2014 

**2. Land and buildings** 

## **Statement of Executive Committee and Treasurer’s responsibilities** 

In preparing the accounts the Executive committee and Treasurer are required to comply with the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities SORP 2015 issued in October 2014 

- observe the Accounts Direction issued by the members, including the relevant 

. 

A full year depreciation is charged in the year of disposal and none in the year of acquisition. The carrying value of tangible fixed assets is reviewed for impairment when events and or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable. 

## **4. Intangible fixed assets** 

There are no intangible assets held by SNGM. 

## **5. Cash Flow Statement** 

The executive committee has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No 1 (revised) from including a cash flow statement in the financial statements on the basis that the charity is small. 

## **6. Income** 

Income is recognised in the period to which it relates, unless specified otherwise by the funder. 

Project funding is, in general, repayable if not expended within the relevant project. Such income is only recognised to the extent that it ceases to be repayable. The income is accounted for on an accrual basis. 

## **7. Resource Expended** 

The Trustees hold title to the land and buildings used by the SNGM. As required by FRS102, existing buildings and their associated land used for fundraising, administration or accommodation purposes were valued and capitalised on the Balance Sheet at 31 December 2021 (Note 17). Subsequent additions are included initially at cost. 

## **3. Depreciation** 

Capital items costing more than £500 are capitalised as fixed assets. Depreciation is provided on all fixed assets, at rates calculated to write off the cost or valuation, less estimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected useful life. Resources expended are included in the Statement of Financial Activities inclusive of VAT which cannot be recovered.  Charitable expenditure includes the direct costs of the activities. Where such costs relate to more than one functional cost category, they have been apportioned in line with the direct costs of the relevant service. 

## **8. Taxation** 

Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK is a registered charity and is not liable for corporation tax on its income under section 505 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988 to the extent that it is applied to its charitable activities. 

9. **Status** Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK is a registered charity. 

## **10. Reserves** 

Reserves are analysed under the headings Unrestricted, and Restricted funds 

## **11. Restricted funds** 

These are funds which have been given to SNGM for specific purposes by donors 

## **12. Fixed asset reserve** 

The Fixed asset reserve absorbs the timing differences arising from the different arrangements for accounting for the consumption of non-current assets and for financing the acquisition, construction or enhancement of those assets for the provision of services. The Account is debited with the cost of acquisition, construction or enhancement as depreciation, impairment losses and amortisations are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities.

The Executive Committee, with the approval of the members may undertake certain activities the proceeds from which, together with donations and funds from other sources, are taken to the General Reserves. These funds may be used at the Executive Committee’s discretion. 

## **14. Restricted reserves (earmarked)** 

This sets out the amounts set aside from the General Fund balances in earmarked reserves restricted to provide financing for future expenditure plans 

Croydon Building Fund :  A reserve created out of donations received from members and other well-wishers to support the purchase of a centre in Croydon for Sree Narayana Guru Mission.  Use of this reserve is restricted for the purchase of new centre with the approval of the Executive Committee. 

and the balance on this reserve is accumulated from previous years.  This reserve is restricted to support running education services for the community. 

Capital Receipts reserve :  A reserve has been set aside for any major works for Sree Narayana Guru Mission’s fixed assets mainly accumulated from member’s monthly contributions. 

Building fund reserve :  Reserve is set aside for the use of further expansion to current land & buildings. 

Disaster Aid reserve :  Set aside to support people suffering from natural disasters or other types of emergencies. The funds will be released to deserving cases subject to review and approval by the executive committee. 

Education Services reserve :  A reserve has been created for providing educational services

Non- Veg food and Alcoholic beverages completely prohibited. 

The hirer is responsible for making sure guests arrive and depart in a quiet and orderly manner and guests do not cause inconvenience to neighbours. 

The hire starts from the time the hall is opened until the session ends and it is locked up. 

Bookings may be made up to a month in advance. 

Orchestra and other music events must use noise limiting apparatus to ensure the neighbours are not disturbed. 

Caretaker charges may apply
