Annual Report 2021

Dear Members

I am delighted to present the 43rd annual report of Sree Narayana Guru Mission (Mission) of the UK for the financial year ending 31st December 2021. On behalf of the elected executive committee, I would like to thank all the members for entrusting myself and the Executive Committee (EC) for the management of the Charity during 2021.

The 2021 committee took office in September 2021. It was the first time in Mission’s history that we conducted an AGM as a hybrid meeting with some members joining us via Zoom, in addition to those attended in person at Mission centre. This marks a new beginning to the functioning of the mission moving forward. Due to the continued constraints of Covid 19, our activities and services for the remainder of the term in 2021 was limited. However, we have planned a stepped recommencement of all mission services from Early 2022 and this EC shall continue to work closely with members, other organisations, and councils to ensure the safeguard of our benefactors are given utmost priority.

As you know the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic continued most part of 2021. In the best interest of the safety of the public, the committee conducted a regular review of the situation and continued the decision to suspend all centre-based activities and social gathering. This affected most of the services that Mission offered.

Gurudharma - Committee decided to restart pooja during weekends from 25th April, conducted by Mr Suresh Kumar Gangadharan, Mr Arun Peethambaran and Mr Giridharan Vidhyadharan. As the lockdown eased on public gathering, we reopened the mission centre to the public from Gurujayanthi day on 23rd August 2021. The monthly pooja at Eastham centre resumed on 5th September 2021, after almost 18 months of lockdown. Gurujayanthi was celebrated at the mission on 19th September 2021 after 2 years. As part of the celebration Mr Sanal Madhavan and Mr Jason Suresh presented chapters 1 to 5 of 'Pure Philosophy Simplified for Youth' written by Muni Narayana Prasad. Mission also presented copies of the book to all the health professionals who conducted the SNGM health-talks during the Covid lockdown.

East Ham Centre Pooja which recommenced in September, however was ceased later in the year due to increasing Covid cases.

Croydon centre remained closed to the public during COVID lockdown, however we also wish to thank Mr Shaji Vasudevan & family for conducting and sponsoring Special Pooja for Guru Jayanthi, Guru Samadhi, and Sivarathri events despite the travel

difficulties. We wish to thank Mr Shaji Vasudevan for his dedication to the Croydon Centre. He volunteers his services unconditionally to conduct daily and special poojas and donates fresh flowers and garlands. His service to the Croydon Centre continues to prove invaluable and we are truly blessed to have a devotee like him.

Membership- Committee initiated a drive to contact some of the elder members of the mission who had been locked in at home and also utilised this opportunity to update the contact details in the membership data. Mr V. Muraleedharan, Mr G Sasikumar, Subash Sadasivan, Mr G Sureshkumar. Mrs Usha Prasobh, Mr Pravin Vijay all supported this activity in EastHam. Mr Subash Sadasivan also assisted in getting the membership data updates. Mr Kishore and Mr Thankaraj coordinated this for Croydon and Southall.

Social & Arts - We celebrated Gurujayanthi celebrations in 2021 after 2 years. This saw huge participation and we were humbled by the sheer support we received from our members and well-wishers. The event was broadcasted live on mission’s YouTube channel. We would like to thank Mr Sherin Sathyaseelan (IMAGE digital media) and Mr Sanal Madhavan for helping us with the technical support for the event. We also like to thank Mr Damodaran Prakash and Mr Satheesh Kumar who helped with the sound and lighting for the event. We like to thank each and every performer and artists who supported to make the event a much memorable event for many, especially as this was the first major social event at the mission premise after a gap of around 18 months.

We also planned Christmas celebrations, however had to cancel the event at the last minute due to the increasing COVID cases. We are thankful to the performers who were looking forward to the event and had been rehearsing for weeks. We plan to have an event around Easter time in 2022, and this event will be to celebrate Vishu and Easter together.

We value the great deal of effort by Mr V. Muraleedharan in 2020 to plan/schedule an Ireland trip, which had to be postponed, however due to the continued travel uncertainties in Europe the committee made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 trip as well. We would like to thank Harry Shaw Coaches for their support during these difficult times by agreeing to refund the deposit in full. We also like to thank those who booked and paid for the trip and look forward to your continued support and participation in the postponed trip planned for 2022.

We also continued our COVID support activities in 2021 although at a much smaller scale. We made a contribution of Indian Rupees ₹1,72,219 to Kerala Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.

Building & Maintenance - Our Eastham centre had a major refurbishment work in 2021. The works carried out were replacement of front entrance doors, LED backlit sign board, back entrance fire door, 10 double glazed windows, carpets replaced in prayer

room and stage, flooring repaired and flooring in main hall replaced. We thank Mr Arun Peethambaran who voluntarily spent over 3 weeks during his time off work and weekends to complete painting work of Mission's Hall and prayer room. Ex-President Mr Sasikumar , Ex-Secretary Mr Suresh Dharmarajan & Mr Jyothiprakash took the lead in managing and overseeing the works until completion.

We also ensured that the premises were made COVID safe as best as we could. Any person who entered the premises was mandated to wear a mask, temperature checks taken and ensure they used sanitisers. We also ensured those who accessed the premise would either sign in with their NHS COVID app, or register their names We are also grateful to Mr Sajeev Divakaran and the rest of his family who agreed a major donation to commence refurbishment work in Croydon. We are also thankful to a number of other donors in Croydon and other parts of the UK, who contributed to the refurbishment costs. The work commenced in November 2021 and is expected to continue until early 2022. The planned work includes building a new WC and kitchen area, refurbishing and relocating the pooja area, replacing the wooden floor with solid concrete with underfloor heating, new suspended ceiling with lighting and new chairs.

We like to thank Mr Sreekumar (Anand Media) for provision of IPTV with Malayalam channels to our centre at East Ham and Croydon.

We thank Mr Sabulal Bahuleyan (Thalam Property Services) for his continued support and providing the premises at a discounted rental for our Croydon centre and also supporting with a contribution to the refurbishment work. Mr Sabulal has also pledged to sponsor the cost of a Guru statue manufactured in Kerala costing around Indian Rupees ₹1,00,000. This project is expected to be completed late early 2022.

Editorial - We like to thank Mr Rob Sackett who supported us in the maintenance of the website. Also, we had some technical challenges, we tried to keep the website up and running during the lockdown. Mission history and some other key content were updated. We target redevelopment of the website in 2022, where the Committee will have more control over the content management and also enhance the website to be able to publish documents, videos and other relevant artefacts.

Mission Facebook page was kept updated regularly with mission events and other relevant updates.

Committee also procured a Zoom conferencing facility and look forward to using this as we plan to recommence education and other services, which ceased due to the COVID lockdown restrictions.

Finance - The past couple of years has been quite challenging due to the lack of any fund generating services like supplementary education services, hall hire or other fundraising events. Although there wasn’t any income, we still had considerable funds for building maintenance. We are grateful for the grant issued by Newham council

£11,574 which helped us to cover some of these. We look forward to recommence the services from early 2022 although we realise this would be an uphill challenge as we would need to start all these afresh. We also received £3,440 as part of gift aid reclaim.

Women’s Forum - We are pleased that although we went through some difficult times, our women’s forum members remained supportive and positive. We continued the exercise sessions via Zoom supported by Newham council. Some of the women’s forum group initiated a daily prayer session via zoom to support the physical and mental well-being of some of the elder members. Women’s forum has also been instrumental in some of the COVID fund raising which continued in 2021 as well and we like to thank you all for your donations. As we recommenced the pooja at the centre, we look forward to recommence the exercise session at the centre from early 2022. The Women’s forum has also been planning for the International Women's Day celebrations for 2022.

Strategy & Planning - The AGM held on the 5th of February 2018 accepted a series of suggestions presented to the members to change the organisational structure, and status as an Incorporated Charity (CIO Association model). The ‘Vision for the Mission 2028’ was envisaged to take the Mission forward to new premises and inspirational themes of activities celebrating two key events i.e., Legacy of Gurudevan on his 100th year of Samadhi and 50th year of the creation of the Mission. Mission’s in a unique position to celebrate Gurudevan’s legacy and to spread his vision to the current and future generations in this country and beyond.

However, we could not progress this much further and we are in the process of reviewing this and continue work into 2022 in revising the Constitution and the governance framework.

Accounting policies of SNGM

1. Accounting basis.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include

the revaluation of certain fixed assets, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective January 2015). The statements have also been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities SORP 2015 issued in October 2014

2. Land and buildings

The Trustees hold title to the land and buildings used by the SNGM. As required by FRS102, existing buildings and their associated land used for fundraising, administration or accommodation purposes were valued and capitalised on the Balance Sheet at 31 December 2021 (Note 17). Subsequent additions are included initially at cost.

3. Depreciation

Capital items costing more than £500 are capitalised as fixed assets. Depreciation is provided on all fixed assets, at rates calculated to write off the cost or valuation, less estimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected useful life.

Statement of Executive Committee and Treasurer’s responsibilities

In preparing the accounts the Executive committee and Treasurer are required to comply with the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities SORP 2015 issued in October 2014

The members of SNGM have a designated Treasurer for the SNGM. The responsibilities of the Treasurer are, including responsibility for the propriety and regularity of the finances for which the Treasurer is answerable, for keeping proper records and for safeguarding the SNGM’s assets.

A full year depreciation is charged in the year of disposal and none in the year of acquisition. The carrying value of tangible fixed assets is reviewed for impairment when events and or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.

4. Intangible fixed assets

There are no intangible assets held by SNGM.

5. Cash Flow Statement

The executive committee has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No 1 (revised) from including a cash flow statement in the financial statements on the basis that the charity is small.

6. Income

Income is recognised in the period to which it relates, unless specified otherwise by the funder.

Project funding is, in general, repayable if not expended within the relevant project. Such income is only recognised to the extent that it ceases to be repayable. The income is accounted for on an accrual basis.

Resources expended are included in the Statement of Financial Activities inclusive of VAT which cannot be recovered. Charitable expenditure includes the direct costs of the activities. Where such costs relate to more than one functional cost category, they have been apportioned in line with the direct costs of the relevant service.

8. Taxation

Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK is a registered charity and is not liable for corporation tax on its income under section 505 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988 to the extent that it is applied to its charitable activities.

Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK is a registered charity.

10. Reserves

Reserves are analysed under the headings Unrestricted, and Restricted funds

These are funds which have been given to SNGM for specific purposes by donors

12. Fixed asset reserve

The Fixed asset reserve absorbs the timing differences arising from the different arrangements for accounting for the consumption of non-current assets and for financing the acquisition, construction or enhancement of those assets for the provision of services. The Account is debited with the cost of acquisition, construction or enhancement as depreciation, impairment losses and amortisations are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities.

13. General reserves

The Executive Committee, with the approval of the members may undertake certain activities the proceeds from which, together with donations and funds from other sources, are taken to the General

Reserves. These funds may be used at the Executive Committee’s discretion.

14. Restricted reserves (earmarked)

This sets out the amounts set aside from the General Fund balances in earmarked reserves restricted to provide financing for future expenditure plans

Croydon Building Fund : A reserve created out of donations received from members and other well-wishers to support the purchase of a centre in Croydon for Sree Narayana Guru Mission. Use of this reserve is restricted for the purchase of new centre with the approval of the Executive Committee.

Education Services reserve : A reserve has been created for providing educational services and the balance on this reserve is accumulated from previous years. This reserve is restricted to support running education services for the community.

Capital Receipts reserve : A reserve has been set aside for any major works for Sree Narayana Guru Mission’s fixed assets mainly accumulated from member’s monthly contributions.

Building fund reserve : Reserve is set aside for the use of further expansion to current land & buildings.

Disaster Aid reserve : Set aside to support people suffering from natural disasters or other types of emergencies. The funds will be released to deserving cases subject to review and approval by the executive committee.
