General Secretary’s Summary - Missions 41[st] Annual Report
Dear Members
I am delighted to present the 41[st] & 42[nd] annual report of Sree Narayana Guru Mission (Mission) of the UK for the financial year ending 31[st] December 2019 & 2020. On behalf of the elected executive committee, I would like to thank all the members for entrusting myself and the Executive Committee (EC) for the management of the Charity during 2019/20.
The 2018 committee continued in office in 2019 & 2020, and the AGM planned for 2020 was delayed due to a number of factors including the Covid-19 Pandemic and government restrictions stopping non-essential contact and travel which came into effect 16[th] March 2020. The activities around the 40th year celebrations which included Drama and 25th year building/pooja room took much effort of the EC. We also organised Swami Charles’ visit which required resources from EC to support the programme. Although the AGM was delayed, the EC had ensured that the functioning of the Mission was not affected, and EC did a very good job to balance this amongst other activities and functions planned for the year ahead.
Year 2019 Update
On 27[th] January 2019 we kicked off the year with a Curtain Raiser event as part of the continuation of Missions 40[th] Year of celebrations. This was a historical view of the Mission’s members and their personal journey as young men and women from native Kerala to the UK via Singapore. It was a much appreciated and applauded video of some of our senior member’s trip down memory lane . The video gave a moving account of the struggle Mission’s members endured and the refuge that membership in the Mission gave them in times of need. The event was marked by presence of our surviving founder members who lit the lamp. The surviving founding members able to attend the function were Mr V Muraleedharan, Mr N Sudevan and they along with Mr TG Sasidharan were honoured to recognise their dedication and services to the SNGM. This function was followed by speeches from Mr Muraleedharan and Mr Sudevan. Mrs Valsamma Thankappan and other members and well-wishers shared their personal experiences as to what the Mission had done for them as members of the Mission. The event concluded with unveiling of a Plaque with a list of founding committee members by Mr Muraleedharan honouring them. The video can be viewed via the YouTube link at the top of the www.sngm.org website front page.
We celebrated Phase 2 of the 40[th] Year of celebrations in grand style at the Redbridge Town Hall on 16[th] June 2019. The programme started with lighting of the lamp and Daivadasakam Prayer. President Mr G Sasikumar welcomed the audience and artists. General Secretary thanked the performers and audience for their dedication and support to make the evening a memorable event catering for the whole family. As a planned item of the 40[th] Year of celebrations, the Mission’s arts wing “Guruprabha” staged a Ganamela by “Melody Beats” and much-acclaimed drama “Advaitham” at Redbridge Town Hall on 16[th] June 2019. We were truly blessed with a great script by Sri Rajan Kizhakkanela, and music composition by Sri Pranavam Madhu. The Drama was directed by Sri Sasi S Kulamada. The cast consisted of 15 actors;

Baldwin Simon, Muraleedharan Vidhyadharan, Jaison George, Ajith Pillai, Vakkom G Suresh Kumar, Sudevan Narayanan, Keerthy Somarajan, Sunith Surendran, Giridharan Vidhyadharan, Mallika Rajan, Geeja Srilal, Manju Mandirathil, Beena Pushkas & Ashwathi M Sasidharan. Sound support was provided by Jas Digital and Joy Gophy and stage lighting provided by Subhash Pillai. The video recording was made and donated by Image Waves (Mr Sherin Satyaseelan). The recording has now been uploaded to YouTube and can be viewed via the link on our website. As our gratitude for the dedication, effort and commitment to the Mission, the President and General Secretary awarded special mementoes to everyone involved to bring this high quality production to stage. Mission also recognised and felicitated Sasi S Kulamada for his direction and his services to the Mission. Photos of the event were taken and donated to the Mission, courtesy of our youth members Vishnu Divakaran & Arjun Divakaran.
The International Women’s Day programmes took place on Sunday 24th March 2019. Guests included Dr Sobha Sen (Eye specialist) and Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz. Again, the event was another warm and memorable function with members coming together in the SNGM Hall.
Mission and its members also raised money to support other charitable causes too in 2019. We raised £1285 for Gandhi Bhavan- a charity in Kerala, supporting the sick, elderly and the impoverished people in Kerala. The General Secretary, and two EC members ( Mr G. Sureshkumar and Mr Vinodbabu) visited Gandhi Bhavan in April 2019 and handed the cheque over to the founder Dr. Punalur Somarajan.
August 2019 saw another devastating heavy rainfall in the monsoon season in Kerala, with severe flood affecting many parts of the southern state of India and a factor which also affected Mission’s plan to host the grand-finale to the 40[th] Year celebrations incorporating Guru Jayanthi which was initially planned for October 2019 at the Redbridge Town Hall. Due to the suffering of our fellow brothers and sisters the EC felt it would be appropriate not to host the event and thus postponed to the following year with a variety show incorporating Guru Jayanthi.
East Ham Centre held another successful Ona Sadya on 15[th] September enjoyed by many members and supporters of the SNGM. Mission thanks Mr Jayakumar, Mr Kishorkumar and General Secretary for collecting the food items from Croydon and delivering it promptly within the tight time constraints. East Ham Centre held the annual Christmas party for both children and adults. We thank Mrs Leena Salim & Sithara Salim for co-ordinating and organising the children’ party.
Guru Dharma Propagation (GDP) Team arranged for Swami Charles Chaitanya to visit the Mission from 3[rd] to 13[th] August 2019 with a busy schedule which included itinerary of activities involving the younger generation and the mission members equally. Swami's visit was inspirational especially for our younger generation. Swamy Charles held meditation, Yoga and study classes at the Mission Centre in East Ham and in Croydon. Accommodation for the Swami was kindly provided by our EC member Mr T.G. Sasidharan and Mrs Sudha Sasidharan in their house. Mission members and well-wishers donated £1000 to Gurukulam Chennai. Special thanks to Mr Sanal Madhavan (GDP sub-committee vice-chairman) for organising and conducting the above classes. We are also grateful to Mr Subash Sadasivan and Pravin Vijay for their support. Atmopadesa Satakam classes were also started in March 2019 chaired by Swami Tyageeswaran and is on-going.
We must also thank the many sponsors of monthly and quarterly Poojas at all our centres in 2019. SNGM of the UK are very thankful to all of our loyal Guru devotees for their generous

His service to the Croydon Centre has proved invaluable and we are truly blessed to have a devotee like him.
Croydon centre celebrated the traditional Ona Sadya and children’s Christmas party this year and both events were enjoyed by adults and children alike. To make the Christmas party different this year, we hired a professional entertainer which proved to be a big hit with the young participants and parents paving the way for greater interest and involvement in the local community for the future. Croydon team received many accolades and positive feedback after the party.

The SNGM Southall centre celebrated Christmas at Christ the Redeemer Church, Allenby Road, Southall on the Saturday 21[st] December 2019. We had 65 people attending the event. It was a good event and all age groups had enjoyed it. The evening consisted of stage performances by professional singers, local artist’s classical dances and an exclusive Christian Margam kali dance concluding the performance as grand success. Children were excited with festive games and Christmas presents given by Father Christmas. We provided delicious vegetarian meals to all the attendees. Our sincere thanks to Mr Joy Sathyavan, Kasa-Tec LTD, Lady Margaret Road, Southall who kindly sponsored all the presents for the stage performers and for the children.
SNGM 2019 Tour to Scotland: A 5-day tour departed on Sunday 22-Sept-2019: This was a spectacularly popular tour, however, initially the take up of seats was slow. With hard work and Guru’s blessing, the 47 seats were filled to conclude a memorable trip which was a credit to the Mission. The trip was value for money in every way with SNGM’s usual fun and camaraderie. The trip received many accolades for the efficient and professionally organised tour and will attract much interest for next year’s tour. Mission must thank committee member Mr Muraleedharan for managing and executing the difficult administrative task. This year, we also held a one-day tour to Eastbourne consisting of two coaches with members participating from all three centres which was also a very successful trip. A credit to Mission’s tours synonymous with fun filled value for money tours. I am sure this will pave the way for keen participation in future trips.

Building & Maintenance
The 2019 committee undertook the overhauling and updating of the Mission’s alarm system. A new alarm system with annual servicing contract was installed in January 2019. A replacement of Mission Centre's front shutters to a large single shutter was also done. The system is now remotely operational, and the public can now see the full-frontal view of our premises. This has given a new look to the centre. The signage will also have to be modified and refurbished in the future. We also acquired 25 high quality chairs for the office room.

General Secretary’s Summary - Missions 42[nd] Annual Report
Year 2020 Update
The 2019 Committee could not hold an AGM in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions imposed by the UK Government prohibiting the congregation of people since March 2020.
Following the success of last year’s Scottish trip; in February 2020, the committee appointed committee member Mr Muraleedharan to liaise with Tour operators “Harry Shaw” to formulate an Ireland Trip. Our successful trip last year and the attractive itinerary selection for the 2020 tour paved the way for a high demand of tickets to Ireland and consequently, the tickets were sold out in 3 days. This was a testament to the renewed trust tour-goers had in the Mission’s high value for money trips. Mission thanks Mr Muraleedharan for his effort in this regard. Sadly the trip had to be postponed to 2021 due to the uncertainties of travel restrictions over the Pandemic, however, a full refund was made to passengers requesting return of the ticket price.
We all know of the devastation, misery and chaos that the COVID-19 Pandemic had on all of us personally, and the sufferings by our friends, family and other fellow human beings worldwide. The committee were diligent enough to suspend all social activities at the Mission centres in East Ham, Croydon and Southall in early March as soon as we heard of the reports of pandemic and its ferociousness. The EC thus made a very difficult but prudent decision to suspend our operations and activities with a regular monthly review, which included education, pooja and other activities that involved social contact w.e.f. 23[rd] March 2020.
Monthly Poojas in East Ham Centre were sponsored by: January SNGM of the UK February Mr & Mrs S Ravindran & family March Mr & Mrs P Vijayan & family Monthly Poojas in Croydon centre January Miss Suja Gopinathan & family February Mr Mohandas Sivadasan & family March Mr Jayakumar & Kishorkumar & family
Samuha Pooja in Southall Centre was held January 2020.
Sadly 2020 has had to end with continued suspension of activities and we hoped to resume services, subject to government directives. The Mission is pleased however, to report of the support we gave to COVID affected members of the community by giving out food parcels to the needy in a controlled and safe manner. We thank all members and supporters of the Mission for their generous donations towards this worthy cause Volunteers included Mr & Mrs Jeevan Jyothiprakash, Justin Minien, Shiju Ouseph, Shyma Sasiraj, Sini Prasobh, Suni Prasobh, Risa Dharmarajan, Sasi Nair, Ranjith Pushpangadan, Miss Yolenn and L Dileepkumar.
Whilst the East Ham premises remained vacant, the EC arranged for the overhaul and replacement of the heating systems in all three floors as well as the ventilation system. The Mission thanks our member Mr R Prasad from Croydon for his dedication, work and donations

this year to the Mission. We are also pleased to report and thank the Local Councils in Newham and Croydon for their grants which have greatly supported the Mission’s financial position. The local charity Centre4M wound down their operations in August 2020 and the trustees approved a grant of £4000 with a recommendation that the proceeds might be used as a seed fund to start some form of “Pravasi Relief Fund” in the future, a project they could not fulfil before winding down. We thank Mr Prasannan and the trustees of Centre4M for their generosity and trust in the Mission. All grant funding in 2020 have significantly helped to ease some of the financial burden on the SNGM during a very difficult and challenging year.
Croydon centre remained closed to the public during COVID lockdown , however we also wish to thank Mr Shaji Vasudevan & family for conducting and sponsoring Special Pooja for Guru Jayanthi, Guru Samadhi, and Sivarathri events despite the travel difficulties. We wish to thank Mr Shaji Vasudevan for his dedication to the Croydon Centre. He volunteers his services unconditionally to conduct daily and special poojas and donates fresh flowers and garlands. His service to the Croydon Centre continues to prove invaluable and we are truly blessed to have a devotee like him.
A team of EC members also contacted elderly members during COVID lockdown to have a chat to ensure their safety and wellbeing. The EC is also grateful to Mr Subash Sadasivan and Pravin Vijay for their support. A great deal of effort was put in by another team to bring membership details up to date, including telephone numbers, and where possible to update contact numbers. This will be useful to set up standing orders and electronic collection of membership arrears and subscription in the future.
As part of the health and wellbeing of our members, we launched several online Skype sessions to engage people during the lockdown. These programmes started with a weekly Skype session chaired by Swamy Tyageeswaran of Gurukulam on “Unlocking Daivadasakam”. The sessions gave participants a chance to engage with friends and draw comfort from Swami’s commentary on the Universal Prayer and its relevance to the challenges that lay ahead. This unique opportunity to engage members online gave rise to other Skype classes too.
We also started a “Lets Talk Health series” led by Dr Jason Suresh initially addressing and understanding truths and myths of COVID-19. In subsequent sessions, he went on to support the initiative and co-chaired with other medical doctors and consultants to give a more comprehensive explanation on a number of other health issues concluding with Questions and Answers. Participating Doctors and consultants included Dr Chidambaram Nethaji, Dr Bapu Sathyajith, Dr Hena Vijayan, Dr Saman Ahmed, and Dr Sudhir Sukumar. All these video recordings are on YouTube and is accessible though the link on our website www.sngm.org.
Mission also embarked on mental wellbeing group, via Skype on growing vegetables and sharing best practices in gardening. All these groups gave members an alternative means to communicate with friends and family in a positively engaging and productive way.
Other skype sessions included coffee with Nancy Yeilding, a disciple of Guru Nitya Chaithanya Yathi and Head of Island Gurukula Aranya, Washington, USA. Nancy Yielding was scheduled to visit us in May/June 2020 but was postponed due to Covid-19. Special thanks again to Mr Sanal Madhavan (GDP sub-committee Vice-chairman) for liaising with Gurukulam & Dr Jason Suresh for liaising with the medical doctors and organising the above classes.

COVID-19 restrictions and the effects of the pandemic continues to shadow the resumption of our services in the short term and into 2021. Our priority still remain to maintain and support the welfare of our Guru devotees, members, and supporters of this charity and strict adherence to Government guidelines on gatherings and social distancing. We pray that our faith in Gurudevan will go some way to comfort the challenges we will face in 2021. Thank you all for your continued support and understanding as always.
